I'm hoping someone has done a side by side comparison. If not, perfect timing for me to.

Got some strawberry cough cuts I need to transplant. I'll do identical pot sizes, and do one straight coco, the other coco/perlite. See what happens.

All the best,
TG

i put a layer of hyfroton on bottom of pot then add a couple of small hand fulls as I add coco and gently mix as the balls like to sink down if you really mix hard.Ihave been transplanting from 16 oz solo cups that have ocean forest as the medium into coco with3 gal. pots and they showed no signs of anything exept taking off very quickly. I am now going completely coco(with a lil added hydroton). All Canna nute line.I use ro water and Idon't have ANY equipment or strips or anything for testing ph or ppm or ec and I don't have any problems at all. I love this stuff. my 2 cents on coco! it's easy. nuggler

OK, so I did the test. I transplanted 2 cough cuts into keg cups, 1 pure coco, 1 60/40 coco/perlite.

I noticed that the pure coco began running off before the coco/perlite, and ran off faster. But after giving them 1/2 hour to run off, the coco/perlite weighed less.

Pure coco= 339g ; coco/perlite=275.1

Get Mo, that was pretty much my theory, too, and I believe this data proves it.

All the best,
TG

HD perlite or chunky perlite?

I got exactly the opposite results as you. I let it drain for probably something in the range of 2-3 hours, I don't remember I just left and came back.

Did you tare first?

I like Black Gold Coco Blend with 1/3 perlite mixed in it and it ends up being just like Botnicare's Ready Gro Moisture line and it's cheaper too! $15 for 2 cubic ft..

I noticed the clumping too thats why I add perlite cuz it has pumice in it but not much at all and also the BGCB is OMRI listed for those that care

My folks grow some uh the best hydro I ever seen, I thought it was cut with perlite but it is actually 2:1 coco/readygro aeration formula. This stuff is soil-less but has a few added extras like seaweed and earthworm castings. Think Ima try it, maybe do a side by side if I ever get the room...

I have never used pure coco, only cococan mixed with perlite. I can say tho that with cococan mixed with bout 40 percent Fox Farm Big chunky perlite in hand watered 5 gallon buckets I averaged between 4.5 -6.5 ounces per plant under 600 watt llights. Im not gonna be using cococan again after I inherited some fungus gnats this last run. So Im going to start using botanicare cocogro mixed with perlite. I noticed that the botanicare cocogro has no holes in the bag so theres no chance of any kinda bugs or larvae being in it where as the cococan has lil breather holes in it which is obviously how the gnats and or larvae got into my garden. What a shame cuz cococan is such a great product. What do you guys think the optimal PH would be for plants in coco/perlite? I was at 6.5 but started havin problems with sum yellowing so now Im bringing it down to 6.0 over the course of a week or so.

I use pure coco although have done the mix thing. To me pure coco looks less "dodgy" especially when you chuck it on the garden.Anyone looking at perlite knows its for hydro. Also from what Ive read you get much better and finer root structures in coco than perlite so why use it at all?. My method of growing involves vegging inside and putting them out in the bush to flower(semi geuriila style) so plain coco dosn't stand out like perlite either.

Thought I'd throw an example of what's possible in coco/perlite with small containers and automated watering. This is a strawberry cough, 3 waterings a day, recirc, with GH 3 part and a crapload of supplements.

Anyone seen results like that in pure coco? I'm not talkin shit, I'm honestly curious. Haven't even really payed enough attention to notice if anyone's even had results like this with coco/perlite.

All the best,

Yeah, I have... These plants were in desperate need of a transplant. Perlite would have only restricted the root growth. I finished them in one gallon rounds after 2 or so months of veg. Some shit went down and yeah, had to start watching my back.

How'd you water those?

Things are much better, thanks man... Normally I would never veg plants that long but whatever.

They got watered with an automatic dripper manifold modeled after Pico's. They finished out at 4 waterings a day and 1 at night at a little over 5 foot. Pain in the ass if you ask me. If you wanna check it out, in my old gallery there's a picture of a comparison of a 1 G round to a 6 in square. Not a whole lot of difference.

57% for straight coco today.
Canna felt the need to add more airspace to their coco
so now they make a coco mix of fines, threads & chunks of coco fibre,
then compress into slabs.
It's called Canna COGR.
