lots of moms, 400W or 1000W MH??

I am going to run 24 moms in E&F buckets in roughly a 10x10 area. I was planning on 600W MH till I realized one tiny little problem, they dont make a 600W MH Or at least its not very common and thus not practical. I already considered 400W but thought a little more depth/penetration would be better since they will be big bushy moms. But I wanted to avoid heat so the 600 would be ideal.

So less 1000's or more 400's?

I have a 400 CMH next to a 1000MH and it seems to do a pretty good job. I looked at the bulb and was like WTF is this going to do? Plugged it in and its pretty damn bright.


How many moms you have and what's your setup like?


What do you do when those plants get too tall? just top everything?

those paticular plants are outdoor moms, they have been alive a few years now, i let them grow and get bushy, then pretty much cut them in half, then they bush out twice as big as before, tie em down, big pots, we used 2-1k hps, these were veggin with a bunch of indoor clones, now these are under 1-600w hps....you dont wanna know how many moms i have....one room is small more of a genetic library, when you need something its there, i keep most in this room in 1-2 gallon pots, then you bring what you need from that room to the main mom room which can be as little as a 250w mh- to 2000w

And Yamaha bro.. Go for the 400's.. Cover more space and have more moms and less heat.... Moms dont really need 1k of light.. I keep mine under t'5s and 150 watt light..

Yeah, if they are moms don't count out floros bro. They suck for flowering but as far as cloning goes they are great, I'm sure they do just fine for keeping moms under too.

There's really no good reason to keep mom plants that large. Shaggy from hg 420 kept his mom plants in 4 inch square pots their entire lives, and had so many cuttings from them that he had to throw many away each time he trimmed.

Moms don't need a lot of light either. Even 24 moms could probably be kept alive under maybe 4 shop lights running 32W 4' T8 lamps. So that's just 256W of lighting, not 400W. Shop lights are cheap too. There's no reason to bombard them with all that lovely HID light when they're really there to just provide you with a little new growth on a regular basis.

I am not feeling the fluros. I put some extra moms in a small setup with two fluros and they havent grown since I put them in. Thats fine, as my goal is just to keep them alive for now. I took a boatload of clones from the main mom table a few days ago and the plants are already bouncing back with more clones.

I do not think fluros are going to work. I need rapid growth all the time

I need to get at least 50 cuts per plant, every 30 days. If it turns out the moms produce more, great, then I scale back. Yes I need 1200 cuts, hell I may need more if I loose more than 10%

I think I will go with 400's. The 400 CMH I have been using has done real well. How much area do you think a 400 would cover when doing moms? Mine currently covers a 5 foot depth, and maybe 3 feet wide, since it is next to a 1000.

I'd suggest a 1Kw or two on a light mover, but if you're going to go with 400s you should get 5' x 5' per with multiple lamps and all that overlap.

dude, this guy needs many clones, 4 shop lights aint going to cut it, he needs lots of new growth on a regular basis not a little,.... and yes there is a reason to keep moms that large, some of us arent growing in our closets lol ...4 inch pots aint cuttin it either

i dont know man, that plant in your pic doesnt look half the size...the plants here are at least 4'x4' ill measure next time im there....im guessing/hoping there's more then 150 cuts on them...if not
