150 watt hps question

I was wondering how much hotter a 150w hps would run than 5 clfs sorry for the stupid question i have just never used any hid und 400w

with a fan blowing directly on the cfls, cfls will be cooler hands down, it all depends if you can vent it all, you could get a 150watt hps pretty cool with good extraction and air movement around the bulb.

150s will burn the shit out of you if you touch the bulb, I have never gotten a real burn from a cfl, though I bet those big 200 watters put out some heat.

yea i have plexie glass about 6 in from the top with a 80mm pc fan over powered so its running about 60cfm and a 120mm pc fan running about 80cfm for the intake

organic, I'd go ahead and switch your intake and exhaust fans, this will allow for a negative pressure in your cab and better air flow imho

CFL have the hot ballast in the grow area, with hps you can get that out in another space where its not putting heat into your cab.

I have an easier time with 250w remote ballast in my closet than I did with 220w CFL

technically they should put out about the same heat, but the 150 hps definitely feels like it runs hotter. If you use a plexiglass heat shield of some sort, or a cool tube with a fan, you can get the hps pretty much anywhere.

someone else already said it but I will echo it, you want more air going out than you have coming in. Switch those fans around, and running a fan over volted isn't all that smart long term. Just run it normally and use the larger fan as the outgoing.

well i don't want to do that im working in a pretty tight place i thought i posted earlier but i guess i didn't if i switch the fans around im going to have to move the plexieglass losing another 4 or so inches the way i have it setup is perfect i know it might not make that much since but if my cab runs 1 or 2 degrees below ambient then i think its doing pretty well about the fan being over powered that the only converter i have and i dont have money to buy a new one the only voltage regulated one i have is on the 120mm intake fan the one thats over powered i think its ok it a little loud but nothing i can do about that right now you know i have been running it like that for like 5 months now so i think if something was going to go wrong it would have by now heres a shot of what im working with

You could always get rid of the intake fan completely and just let it go passive to keep negative pressure.

ok guys were getting a little off track with the intake and exhaust thing thats all good but i need to know about the 150w and heat im trying to make up my mind and im going to start flowering in like 2 or 3 weeks so i kinda need to get on it

4 42w cfls will put out about the same heat as a 150 w hps. I speak from experience; I've used both. The heat from the hps is more concentrated in one spot though and good exhaust will probably be needed to get the light to an optimum distance from the tops.

I have a very small CFL grow at the moment with 4 42watters in 30 gal stacked rubbermaids. Right now with the ambient temps around 60F I don't need more than passive intake and exhaust really. I can get 2 rows of plants to grow up the sides of the rubbermaids with the cfls in the middle and usually get about 125-150gs depending on the strain.

As for the "5 cfls" you mentioned it depends on the wattage...

I get what you are saying, but people telling you about the fan are trying to help you with your upgrade to the hps, you want to add more heat, and people are trying to tell you how to address that.

you will be able to get more heat out if you get rid of the intake fan, or switch them. Try it both ways and see.

you never gave the wattage on your lamps so anyone's guess would be as good as yours.

organicmonk, I use a 150hps in a very small cab. I only have 95cfm of exhaust and the speed controller is on low. (no intake fan) I use a cool tube/bat wing but I could have got away with a small fan blowing on the bulb. hope this helps.

My cab is 22x29x54 inches. Fan is a single 120mm 76 cfm axial on the exhaust. One 120mm passive intake was enough to cool a 150 HPS. Two 120mm passive intakes cool my new 250 CMH.

i have 2 42 watts 3 26 watts i mean heat isn't an issue if you guys think 4 42 watts bulbs run the about the same i know its weird but the intake/exhaust system works perfect for me i wont change anything around i can run 5 42 watts and its the same temp as running 3 25 watts 1 or 2 degrees below ambient

If you are going to use cfl's I think a real key to a good harvest is to get them vertical in between the plants. This way you can get more intense light to more of the plant. You will get a comparable yield to hps this way. If you keep them horizontal just over the tops you're losing out...It's always worked better for me anyway.

i beleave this post is related to his 1sqft grow comp, i dont think hed be able to do that without wasting bud space, i do know what you mean though i hung bulbs inbetween my plants which certanly helpd them fatten up.
