Some facts to help separate the fiction:

Purple Haze ... is a reference to the 'purple smoke' that soldiers in Vietnam dropped to mark an lz (landing zone) on a med-vac (medical evacuation) in the field. A system still used today.

The colour purple is then representative of the casualties of war.

i read that a few times differnt places .

.....no idea where i read this(on the net i think?)..sorry memorys a bit "hazey"..so something like...jimi made a pass at his commanding officer or another soldier or something and got kicked out on the quiet...no not saying he was gay... he just knew what he was doing..HH. =]-~

While I didn't smoke my first weed until '73 (four years after Woodstock), I'm fairly certain the stuff that was available was similar.
Its reasonable to speculate that if and when Jimi Hendrix chose to partake, he most likely had access to the best smoke available. That would be sativa and the biggest supply came out of Mexico with smaller amounts from Colombia and Jamaica.
A lot of us who began around that time have fond memories of the kind of smoke we had, but there were nowhere near the variety available today. The only green herb I ever saw was immature homegrown or ditch weed pulled from hemp beds along RR tracks. Later on, the first sinsemilla appeared and, at least in this part of the country, all of it was Afghani.
IMHO, Jimi (if he chose to smoke weed) enjoyed the same things most of us had. However, the variety and quality available to today's smoker would likely have made him green with envy!

This isnt from the 60s but is the only purple haze commercially available that I know of

I've grown Oldtimers and the ones I had didn't go purple. I have had purple weed before and didnt find the taste that nice to be honest (I prefer clorophyll taste) and it wasnt very strong either.

try oldtimers haze theres a purple pheno...its the closests youll get to purple haze from back in the day...btw the song refers to lsd . im sure that haze will get you feeling pretty phsychadelic anyways

I'm betting Jimi was toking more or less the same chit we all were at the time. I bet not everything he smoked was top shelf, commercial mex was king back then and sometimes we felt lucky to have that. I forget which summer it was that weed was highly scarce but there was like almost none the whole summer. There was usually always some hash around though, some was ok, some was good and some was just outrageous and hash usually sold around here (the northeast) for $60 - $80 an oz or $4 - $6 a gram. Weed was usually $15 a "lid" which was an oz or less and was usually some mexi until about 1970 when Jamacan made the scene for $20 an oz followed closely by lumbo for about $25 an oz. Vietnamese and Thai weed were available occasionaly with the Thai usually on sticks. I think Jimi was gone a few years before "sens" really made the scene, the first that I saw was about 73-74 but Jimi might have run into it a few years before.

Okay, so it's 2008 and there's no Purple haze out there, none of worthy quality that is. So ICers, what would it take for you to be satisfied having a real Purple Haze Plant? Would you want a strong Haze with a purple look? Grape tasting haze, that turns Purple in flowering? What is it that would bring back the Purple Haze trend? Let me know, I'll go get my tools and find the strains or seeds, and we'll get it going? Anyone willing to help? lol.

I,d love to follow a breeding thread if u make one about breeding a Purple Haze stain...

again, purple haze is a mistaken concept imho. its not what jimmy was singing about, thats where all the lore lies and its false. Haze was a word before the cannabis strain, sometime after that it was the name of a strain of cannabis. The strains comprising haze contain purple genes. There is no purple haze, but there is haze that is purple

At the monterey pop festival,Owsley showed up with 14,000 hits of Monterey purple made for the event ,which gave out to everybody .Including the musicians ,jimi had 2 that night ,he lit his guitar on fire..

We used to get Owsley LSD in the late 60s. What a ride that was. Cleanest trip Ive ever had. Thanks for bringing back memories.
