Do you like indie music?

cuz I sure do. :rasta:

Its not the only genre i listen to it, but it has some of my fav artist in that genre. there can be indie hip hop and rock and folk and so on... the word indie can get confusing. there is indie electro/pop/folk/punk/hiphop. Its more of an diy attitude and the way they go about recording. Word of mouth is used a lot to get a band heard. usually keeping a lo fi sound in the production. Which i happen to love.

off of wiki...good enough heh.

Genres associated with indie

* Alternative rock, particularly indie rock, indie pop, post-rock, and many others
* Experimental music
* Folk
* Glitch
* Industrial music
* Punk rock
* New Age music
* Neo Soul
* Underground Hip Hop

some of my personal favorite bands are: built to spill, dinosaur Jr, Beulah, Elliot smith, Brandtson, Stars, Broken Social Scene, Notwist... list could go on for days...:nono:

than indie hip hop for example would be be bands like this ...(atleast for me) People under the stairs, Cage, Eyedea....list could go on too long.:

whats your opinion? People seem to be fussy when it comes to this genre.

whats some your fav bands/groups?

although they can barely be considered indie by now, modest mouse will always be my all-time favorite band...and as cliche as it sounds, i've been listening to them since before they became popular =D

i'm also a huge fan of nine inch nails...those are the two main bands i've really taken the time to listen to just about everything they have available

other good bands, imo (not all indie, sorry):

Strokes
MSI
K&D
Third Eye Blind
Deftones
Crystal Method
Dust Brothers
Gorillaz

always down to hear what anyone has to offer

Sorry, indie music sounds horrible to me. It was alot better 10 years ago. Now it all sounds like emo crap and bad franz ferdinand copies. Oh and bad jack johnson copies

JJ and FF, Indie music?....come again? I don't think you have really heard good independent music.

However, your point about it being better 10 years ago has some truth to it. Around the time when Hey Drag City label was still putting out the likes of Pavement, Silver Jews and Palace.

Still good stuff around though, you just gotta dig around and avoid the Pitchfork Media hyped trash.

JayRoach420, Amen to the Notwist...good stuff.

I like my post-rock, minimalist and math rock:
- Slint
- Do Make Say Think
- Explosions In The Sky
- Eluvium
- Animal Collective
- The Dirty Three

Best Indie music seems to be coming out of Montreal in the last few years...all seem to have started with Kranky bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor...something in the water there.

Are we allowed to post links to clips, etc?

indie covers a wide spectrum of music and can be very deceptive from country to country and cultural differences

by the definition given i guess my main taste would be paleo-punk, such as iggy and the stooges, mc5, ramones, sex pistols, richard hell and the void oids, the cramps, the dead kennedys, joey shithead and doa, pete shelly and the buzzcocks, and of course the subhumans and their touching rendition of "slave to my dick" :rasta:

and if garage bands of all shapes and sizes fit in, :yes:

So true. In the last decade, indie music has almost become unquantifiable....very postmodern. :D

But to the trained ear, when you hear indie music - you know it, no matter what the genre.

Ive got a 10er here for anyone who can accurately describe indie music.

JayRoach420. I have heard Lali Puna but that was back around 2004. They still putting out music?

As a kid, I was friends with tha guitarist from tha Dwarfs , a San Francisco punk band that was pretty popular in tha underground scene in tha late 80's . Very cool fella , wouldn't even know he played that kinda music , judging by his appearance , lol .

Not sure which of these would be classed as Indie or Indie/Rock but it's few bands i like:

Ocean Colour Scene (probably the best band when heard playing live)
The Seahorses (Only 1 album offically released -'Do It Yourself', the 2nd album is available somewhere tho but wasn't officially released
Shed 7
Arctic Monkeys
Oasis
Richard Ashcroft
The Verve
Red Hot Chilli Peppers
The Stone Roses
The Strokes
Wolfmother (voice is almost like a younger Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, awesome live)
Foo Fighters ( both Melodic + heavy tracks, complete band)
Nirvana ( :headbange :yes: )

Peace

I'm suprised no one has said Beirut yet.

I love Beirut!...but.

A couple of months ago they were playing in Melbourne. Pre-booked my ticket as it was likely they would sell out, organized the time off work and made the 1 hour flight from Hobart......the bastards canceled on the night of the gig. -"-
