hey gang :)
a buddy just asked me a question so broad i couldnt answer him! :biglaugh:
he's in the market for a scale and asked me 'which one he should buy' ....

well, thats a loaded question if i ever heard one!

so..lets hear it from yall :) if you had to buy one rightnow, say online,

would you get/do you prefer the most accurate piece of electronics you can afford?

are you hundreth-place-only type guy? :D

or do you/would you prefer a stealthy type scale?
such as the ones they make now that look like an ipod, or a cd case, etc?
heck, they even have one now that doubles as an ashtray! heh..
real cool, IMHO, but im sceptical as to its accuracy....:chin:...any1?

maybe yer the type to go for the cheapest one you can find? look at it as a disposable type deal? :D
for whatever reason, your cheap, your broke, or maybe because you find yourself carrying it around/banging it around...or they always get lost/broken/stolen?

or a table/large/high capacity digital scale, perhaps?

c'mon...rock the vote, peeps! :rasta:

I am not that concerned with getting measurments right on

I am a personal grower, so it is only for my own records, but I got a scale(digital) at a novelty store, that was having a liquidation sale, 20 bucks. Measures up to 300 grams, auto cailbrating, and allows for tare changes, serves my needs perfectly

I bought a cheap .01 accuracy digital scale off ebay and have been satisfied. I discovered a couple of things.

#1, my local guy ripped me off on an eighth, which should have been 3.5 grams. It was actually more like 3 grams.

#2, the bums of Frisco did me right on the eighths I bought there. Right on the mark. Bless those bums.

#3, I realized I could use this to weigh my gold necklace and sell it on ebay. shit, gold is 900 an ounce these days. That just goes to show that the american dollar is not worth a damn anymore. Back when Clinton was President, gold was only $250 / ounce.

cheap scales are the best.

When i was in high school the chem lab was always out of equipment, so we were forced to buy ALSO digital scales.

A 9$ 0.1 precision did the job fairly accurate.

And if you don't trust the scale, just pick a coin and weight it. Coin's weight is standard and fairly accurate (when new, up to the fifth decimal number).

I use other...lol I bought a postal scale at Wally-World for $20 it measures grams to pounds It's digital and haven't had to replace the 9 volt battery in 7 years.

Cheap to keep and I have no need to measure powder!!! I basically just use it to measure my cured harvest weight.

I had one of those digi's that looks like a cd case...and after several months...I started noticing my bags were looking HUGE!! I checked it against my Ohaus triple beam...and realized the digi was off...and I had been giving 9-ish gram quarters out!!
I only use my triple beam now--

Bought my triple beam new in 78, with the case, it still works fine, even if it is a little sticky.

Damn, that is the best idea I've heard so far on ICMAG. I mean it. I was thinking how to test my scale just this morning, and that idea never occurred to me. Every other small item in the world is a non-standard weight, known only to the manufacturer, except a coin. Now I just have to log on to a numismatic web site and determine the exact metric weight of a U.S. quarter. (Coin, not bag.)

btw I'm high as hell as I write this. :smoker: Did I make sense? Last time I wrote on ICMAG high, I remember Gypsy Girl wrote me and said more or less I didn't know what I was talking about. Then when I later logged in and reread the message I was like... yeah...

I dont need accuracy as much as I need stealth so I settled on my own homemade MacGuyver scale. It consists of one altered metal coat hanger and common accurate counterweights. One US nickle is always 5.0 grams and all US bills come in around 0.96 to 0.99 grams depending on their humidity. Ive never had a complaint and every time I have checked it against another scale its always been within a few tenths of a gram here or there. Accurate enough for me and its something that no po-po is going to look at twice and think its a scale. That and the only thing it cost me was a trip to my closet for a hanger.

Ive had a Myweigh palmscale(150G/0.1G) for over 4 yrs, replaced the battery once and ive compared sacks to other sacks weighed on tanitas and its usually 99% on. I never weigh more than a couple dozen grams at a time so i have no need for a large accurate scale, ive had excellent results with it and its paid for itself more than 10 times now(original cost was 29.99$)

you're right! Altho my scale reads "5.1" grams. I'm sure its the scale. It was advertised as being only accurate + / - .1 of a gram, so close enough. If I were shorted .1 of a gram it wouldn't keep me up at night. But I guess I can calibrate now, if the scale supports it.

Cheap but effective is good for me...

For years I have had a brass handscale for "postage" that does the trick - it is almost bang on at 28g and less...

made sense to me. great thing about currency is that it weighs a specific weight for a reason. when countd in masses theres no time to count each bill, its done by weight and by now im sure theres some computer scanning technology as well, for authenticity..
anyways a US nickel will weight exactly 5 grams and any bill of any denomination weighs 1 gram. between a callibration weight and these two common "house/commercial items" your sure to find whether or not you scale is accurate.

off the topic a bit but to Zeeba.....

You cant just weigh a gold necklace and sell it. The gold price is a spot price and its for 1 ounce of PURE gold. Your necklace will be probably 9ct, 14ct or 18 ct. So you cant price it at $900 per gram cause all personal gold is mixed for jewellery.

go with a myweigh palm scale 5.0....they retail at headshops for like $60-80...online like i got mine for 45...guy at the shop didnt believe me. Accurate as hell, comes with 100g weight, trays and indiglo display, tare, one touch calibration etc...

Right on, Haps. I used to use an Ohaus triple beam that I found in the school lab back about the time you aquired yours. hehe Now I use an ebay .01 cheapy that works great! It takes up a lot less space than the old triple beam. :joint:
