"Buddhism is, in a sense, an eternal struggle between the Buddha and demons; in other words a contest between positive and negative forces. If we are never assailed by negative influences, we cannot be said to be truly practicing Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism. Buddhist practise lies in bravely facing and overcoming adversity."

"It is the way of scholars these days to assert that only those who
possess superior wisdom and strenuously exert themselves in the practice
of meditation have the capacity to benefit from the Lotus Sutra, and to
discourage persons who lack wisdom from even trying. But this is in fact
an utterly ignorant and erroneous view. The Lotus Sutra is the teaching
that enables all living beings to attain the Buddha way. Therefore, the
persons of superior faculties and superior capacity should naturally
devote themselves to contemplation and to meditating on the Law. But,
for persons of inferior faculties and inferior capacity, the important
thing is simply to have a heart of faith."

"In his 'Twenty-six Admonitions,' Nikko Shonin says: 'You should revere a teacher of the Law who engages in its propagation as a sacred priest, even though he may be your junior' (GZ, 1618). In other words, the spirit of Nichiren Buddhism is to accord the highest respect to those who strive to spread the Daishonin's teachings. The greatest champions are those who excel in propagation."

The Gosho clearly states:
"Thus one's thoughts are expressed in one's voice."*
Let us capture the hearts of our friends with a voice that resounds with the truth,
a voice that accords with our own thoughts!

Hey Desi were are you at? There are no attitudes about receiving Gohonzon from any of us, I'm sure. We just all know how hard it is--but also how much you know you absolutely did the right thing for your life when you get it done. Nothing but compassion for the arduous journey here, Bro.

As far as your days old Q of what the phrase "Never seek this Gohonzon outside of yourself" means to us, I will say this: The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind is the bridge between the Dharma Body, the Reward Body, and the Manifest Body--the Three Bodies of a Buddha. In the absence of your own Buddha Nature your Mind cannot observe the Object of Devotion.

It is only through the Union of your Buddha Nature and the Eternal Buddha Nature of the Dharma itself, that the power to transform the Mind and Attain Supreme Perfect Enlightenment in a single lifetime can be achieved. Each one of us is a manifestation of the Wonderful Law. The Law is never outside of us.

We are all in reality nothing more than manifestations of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, the Law that is mother and father to all things and gives rise to all phenomena.

When our life joins the Eternal Law in the "Eternal Ceremony in the Air" that is chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo to the Gohonzon, we are doing what we are saying. We have "Returned in Devotion to the Mystic Law of the Lotus Sutra." We actually sit in praise of the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Thus Come One which is one with our Eternal Buddha Nature.

The Beginningless World of Buddhahood meets the Beginningless Nine Worlds, and "reveals that the nine worlds are all present in Beginningless Buddhahood and that Buddhahood is inherent in the Beginningless Nine Worlds. This is the true mutual possession of the Ten Worlds, the true hundred worlds and thousand factors, the true three thousand worlds in a single moment of life." (WND-1, pg 235)

The bottom line is that the Gohonzon is necessary to achieve enlightenment in this lifetime, but it is YOU that achieves it by becomming inseparable with Gohonzon in the process of practice. The power is YOU. The power of Gohonzon is YOUR power.

Never seek this Gohonzon outside yourself>(It actually means accept the fact that the Gohonzon is you based on your Eternal relationship with the Buddha of Beginningless Time whom is the Buddha of Limitless Joy, the Nam-myoho-renge-kyo Thus Come One. Because of this fact you can reveal yourself to be a Thus Come One of Original Enlightenment eternally endowed with the Three Bodies.)

That's what it means to me.

Much love and deep respect,

Thomas

Hey Bud! Congrats on the new garden! WooHoo! We can all enjoy another session of "Summer with the Babbas!"

As far as Silas is concerned, you do know that what you said about doing enough is total bullshit self-flagellation, don't you? As much as we all loved him-one could not encounter Silas and not love him--he was suffering. Have faith that it was time.

He was the most giant of all dogs I have ever known in this lifetime. To drag that giant frame around had to have been very difficult for him. The facts are the facts.

You and Mrs.B allowed Silas to encounter the Law and hear the Daimoku (even though he was nearly deaf, I know this to be true). What greater gift could you bestow upon your dear friend and how could he take advantage of it as a dog? He has transmigrated as we all do. You will be with him again and again. Pray for his enlightenment and have faith that it will be achieved.

How could that make you feel like anything but smiling?

Much love and deepest respect,

Thomas

My Bed of Compassion!

My Bed of Compassion!

 Hi everybody! Thankyou all for your vibrations! Right now you all are carrying me across the great river, so I don't fall totally to the Devils Den..........because my outer shell or worldly being is living in Heavens Hell. I've been with the Devil King this week and all his helpers!............I mean for real........you wouldn't believe........no days off, on a gigantic roof, sun sweltering down on me all day, just trying to burn me down to a crust. I'm surviving by this thread......all your great posts and wisdom!

Thomas, thankyou for answering my Q. That was my excuse for not posting.......damn, busted again, hehehe.........I'm so bad right now! I will overcome this barrier, I know I will........time, it's just time is patiently waiting on me.

Bud, I'm so sorry for your loss..........my pets are my children, I don't have kids. I can shed tears just thinking of all my troopers who fought with me to survive these tough times.

More later Buddahs..........all my love to each and everyone of you!.........Desi!

And Bonz and Scegy--about waiting for someone we want to chant with: In my experience, never wait. Always start without them. The decision to wait is the work of the Devil of the Sixth Heaven, as is any influence that makes you decide not to chant after you gave thought to doing so.

Whenever you think about chanting, chant! Don't limit the amount you will chant for your partner to chant with you. If they finally sit down right at the end of when you were going to stop, smile from deep inside your heart, thank Gohonzon for this encouragement, and keep on chanting for as long as they will. You can NEVER lose if you have the wisdom to do this.

Sit down and right away start chanting for their happiness. Such a partner is your most important shakubuku--your most important fellow person of faith. (A parent even more so, Bonz.) Chanting sincerely for their happiness is the same thing as chanting for your own.

It's just cause and effect for behaving like a Buddha. You will see the change in your environment occur before your very eyes as your life reflects the fortune of correct thinking, the Buddha Wisdom you call forth and display, by not letting the Devil of the Sixth Heaven have his way. Try this approach and see what happens.

Let me know how that works out for you.

T, the last several posts have been great! Thanks for taking time to share your personal perspective which you nailed as you always do.

I know many here are fighting the 'Devil of the Sixth' in their lives as I am. In talking with T recently he made me see the Devil King somewhat differently that I would like to share. If I ramble on, I apologize, not much time.

I've come to realize that in my life many times or most always in fighting Devilish functions or just bad ass negative occurances in my life I have always used this practice to try to stay ahead or like just 'one step' ahead. What this has done is that if I just slip up or slack off a little I am doomed and it takes a shit load of daimoku or ichinen/determination to get myself back up ahead of the game.

Well, get this. The Devil of the Sixth life condition manifestation is on the Gohonzon just like all other life condition of the 10 worlds. In fact, the characters of the Devil is lined up side by side on the Gohonzon with all the Buddhist gods that we appreciate in the 1st prayer of Gongyo. T made me realize that as we make those protective forces like the Buddhist gods in our life manifest thru our practice of the Daishonin's Buddhism and is necessary for our attainment of Buddhahood in this lifetime we too must use the Devil of the Sixth similarily in order to become a Buddha. We can't be scared or hide or run away, we must use the power of the Law, Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, to make the fukin Devil our friend. For me, Wow! what a concept!

Now, as those negative, ugly fukin Devilish functions keep showin, I turn my eyes in that direction of the characters on the Gohonzon and I am saying " come on dude! is that all you got? You gotta do better than that to stop me!" I feel like I truly have the sword of the Lotus Sutra and facing this Devil head on instead of my other strategy used previously.

It's all about life condition. Its all about life condition. It's all about life condition.

Chant Chant Chant

"Open your eyes to Nichiren, Open your eyes to the People"

Mugi Washhin! Thanks again T!

If Nichiren's compassion is truly great and encompassing, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will spread for ten thousand years and more, for all eternity, for it has the beneficial power to open the blind eyes of every living being in the country of Japan, and it blocks off the road that leads to the hell of incessant suffering.
