Super Sun 2 air cooled hood sealing

What kind of material is the seal on the SS2s? Couldn't you easily replace it with a thicker pad of rubber gasket or something?

i don't know what the material is made of. maybe someone can let us know? my hydro guy told me to look for high temp weather stripping for extra sealing but i haven't been able to find it. home depot and lowes both said the weather stripping they have will melt in high heat.

The only issue I see with the SS2 hood is that I don't see a model that has 8 inch flanges, only 6.

I can see how the 6" flanges are a bummer for some. I'll say again though that I run a 8" vortex full speed, stepped down to 6" immediately, run through two ss2's, with no vibration or noticeable airflow loss. However if you running multiple scrubbers or going long distances I can see the drawback. I opened the hinge and the gasket material just looks like weatherization stuff. I'm sure one could find it pretty easily. Look for "extreme" or other temp related standard when looking.
Anybody ever see one of those "Cool Breeze Magnum" reflectors in use? Holds 2 1000W bulbs in a 4 foot long hood with 8" inline venting. In theory it looks sweet for a 4x8 with a light rail.

The "Cool Star Plus", 5th down. This one looks like a ghetto-rigged reflector mounted on a Cool Tube, but the other one I'm thinking about was integrated a little less sloppy.

Also not quite what I was looking for, and no glass tube per se, but here's the Cool Breeze:

So my SS2 is up and running. I was only able to find a few tiny leaks. I found them by sweeping my hear inches away from every surface and by visually looking. I found leaks at each of the four corners. They are really small and I highly doubt any human could detect odor escaping through them. But I sealed them anyway with some caulk. This macro pic makes my work look a bit sloppier than it really is.

Away from the area seen, the powdercoat (I assume it's powdercoat) completely fills in all the seems. Perhaps my hood just didn't have quite the powdercoat coverage as others. Whatever. It took 2 minutes to permanently fix and I'm very happy with this hood.

Yes, they are sealed very well out of the box. What I did was probably unnecessary but I figured what the hell.

Probably better just not to respond and be happy with the SS2, that's the hood I'm looking at , the specs say 26in long X 13 wide. Do you think it's a good size for a 400CMH? I want something that produces a decent footprint when hung a bit low cause I want to get the light as close as possible (inverse law of light and all that jazz).

I always turn off all my oscillating and ventilation fans and light a bunch of incense sticks.
I turn on the hood ventilation fan(s) and move the incense around the hood and see if smoke any gets sucked in.
I haven't found a hood yet that doesn't suck smoke in.
The SuperSun 2 is pretty tight out of the box, though.
If it only takes the end user a couple of minutes to seal it up completely, I wonder why they don't do it at the factory?
All the trouble for a new redesign and....oh well.
Kick ass hoods none the less.

Tough for me to say. I haven't really tried to measure the footprint. You should check out Pico's thread if you haven't seen it. He did some footprint testing. No really short ones though, I don't think.

That said, I'm using it with a 250w in a fairly small space. 22" x 39". I have no idea if my situation is relevant for you, but....





I've been keeping the glass 6"-8" from the top of the plants. At the moment that's about 26" from the floor. The spread seems satisfactory with those dimensions. Along my far left wall (the side the bulb is on) the brightness does drop as you get higher. It's more noticeable there than anywhere else...



It could be I'd be better off moving the light up a few inches to get more light to the edges of my space. I believe centering the lamp in the hood with a socket extension will improve it. My 250w HPS (pretty sure the nearly the same lamp dimensions as a 400w HPS) is left of the hood center and that seems to lopside the spread at the margins a bit.

my daystar A/C's dont leak shit either.
but that SS2 looks just like my DS's....

instead of caulk id have gotten some weather stripping/foam at home-de-pot and added another ring around the edge....

either way i bet it wont leek smell and functions great.
