16000 BTU Portable A/C is their such a thing as too much power?

hey mary, its not needed for 2 blowers, you can have 1 blower at the exaust of the window unit sucking that hot air and exausting it. Make a box in the back of the unit for that. For the exaust just run a duct to a cool air source preferbly outside, the intake duct can be in the side or top of the unit, when you run it(i just ziptip it to the intake grill) you can aluminum tape the sides that way your window ac unit+blower is sucking air from that cool air intake only.

i hope you saved your receipt when you bought this portable.
so you can send it back.
they are junk.
they dont tell you before you buy it that it cant be used in a room w/ a heat source or bright lighting.
of course, you have both going on in a grow.
live and learn kind sir, damn shame you spent 600 on it, maybe more w/ shipping.
there are numerous threads on this site about how shitty portables are.
you could have saved some money.
i had a portable in a room w/ only 1k, and it ran full power when the lights were on, and only got the temps down to above 80f.
i have 2.4k now and a lovely split type ac, well worth the money i spent on it ($800)
they come pre charged w/ freon. if you can manage to screw together flanged fittings, you can DIY.
plus the wiring, thats cake too.

plus if the vent of the portable isnt w/in 6 ft of a window, you have to add a blower to the back of it.
the heat these things give off is tremendous

dude your a moron. this isnt for a grower..

"The APC2000E does produce chilled air, but it is designed as a personal cooler and is not intended to lower the overall temperature in your room"

"Benefits

Low power consumption and 44 to 47 dB noise output - economical and quiet
24 hour timer, lighted indicator panel and built-in humidistat for convenient control
Uses only 250 watts!! Place beside you for personal cooling (not intended to bring down the temperature of the room) "

"The Amcor APC2000E Personal Air Conditioner is a multi-function unit: 1,000 BTU cooler, dehumidifier and air purifier all in one! "

1000btu?? ur kidding? thats great for a unit WITHOUT a vent but that wont work for any grow. might help YOU out sitting next to you near the coutch/pc

Sorry I should have been more clear. I personally have not used a portable in a grow room. But I have read countless threads where it is suggested not to use them. They are less efficient and they expel room air allowing odor and Co2 if using it, to escape.

You can get a bigger window unit for much less.

Hey guys.. i couldnt respond to this thread cuzz of the 10 posts per 24 hr rule... o well

Im 100% sure im going to return this... just one big big big big question

My room is 13'long 8'wide and 8' high... with 4 400w HPS(eye hortilux)

I plan on growing 4 trees with 1 light per tree.... my only question is will my 8,000BTU Window unit cool this entire area? I also have a inline-centrifugal CFM rated: 275

Im just wondering if this will be enough to cool my room??

should i abandon this thread and start another? i appreciate all the responses

DIGITAL thanks for pointing that out. Just looked at the cheapest one available..

I'm not going to stick up for myself when I really was a moron..so your right DIGITAL. ;)

Okay, well CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A A/C COOLER FOR ME THAT IS GOOD IN PRICE??? MY ROOM ISN'T THAT BIG AND I ONLY HAVE ONE 400w SYSTEM IN MY CLOSET.

SO PLEASE HELP ME OUT, I AM READY TO PURCHASE ONE RIGHT NOW TO COOL DOWN A ROOM. (7x5x8) ONE 400w(400hps/400mh). 6 plants(2 sour D, 3 Durban Poison, 1 purple cat piss)

Mischielf if your growing in a closet and your only using 400 watt, you need to make sure there is good air flow, make sure the air in the closet is exchange pretty well are you can simply cool tube that 400.

this? again? folks knocking each other about something that is room specific? so, portables suck huh? what would you have to use in a garage with no windows, inside a tent? window unit? i think not. oh, add to that it gets 90+ outside.
4000 btus per 1000 isnt going to cut it. a little thought and some tinkering will give you a good portable that meets those colling needs. but dont take my word for it. look at the numbers. 2000w 83 outside temps (right now early spring) inside temps rest at 71 degrees and the bill remains the same as with a window unit but the temps are a full ten degrees lower.

like i said before, its application specific. i can tell you if i used a window unit in my setup, the report would be IT SUCKS!

There is really good air exchange in my grow area. I have exhaust fans enough to cool a bigger room.

I don't want to go with a cool tube and waste money. I just want a portable a/c fan that can cool my closet room so I dont have to resort to that.

That's why I need someone to help me out on which one to purchase. I don't want NO 1000000000000000000 BTU fan, I just need something to cool a small room and still utilize my 400w HPS.

Here's some helpful rolling a/c factoids.
In a SEALED room:

With wall-mounted a/c's you need 5000btU/1000w of light.

With rollers you lose about 20% efficiency,so you need about "6000btU" of rolling a/c per 1000w of light.

With rollers, the exhaust STINKS,you need to plumb in an inline ozone generator or filter thru carbon before exit.

Rollers are handy, they're stealthy, and the technology has improved 300% from when they first came out a few years back. I've used rollers for years, and I love 'em more than ever.
A 12000btU Digital roller is <$500.

Buy a large one,12000btU or > they're efficient with the digital thermostat once you dial it in,and you won't replace it if you upgrade room sizes.

:yeahthats

there it is. the gospel. rez is right about the exhaust stinkin. use some stoner cleverness and either use the ozone or if you already have a fan and filter, its easy to build a little box to surround the filter and have the filter exhaust into the box which is sealed except for the hole outside. works great for me.

also: the above link i posted will get you the 12000 btu for 299. from my research the edgestar has the coldest output of any 12000 btu(tested)
i gotta say, mine pumps out some icy air. this isnt the old school portable that drips and is a pain in the ass. these are no maintainence, and do the job. PERIOD.

Get a couple of dryer sheets, you know those little things you stick in the dryer with the close get a rubber band. Put them over the end of the hose that is what I used to do. Do not put it with the filter in the intake. I did not come up with this myself. I read it in here somewhere a long time ago also. I ran mine in a bathroom with a 1000 W light and it did not exhaust much smell. But I did not want to take any chances, so I used that idea. Just change them out frequently.

Eeeep!
Dryer sheets can cause back-pressure and clog the exhaust, causing compressor failure and possibly fires. Never block the exhausts of motor-driven appliances.
Only hot air from the compressor is exhausted, the a/c's are designed this way.

rez thats true only if you have the 2 hosed portable the single hose ones do exaust the cold air fromthe room
