I understand the sentiment, and as I’ve returned to growing I’ve realised that is almost a full time occupation, that is unless you can spend the money to automate things. Which most people including myself can not. I myself sold a lot of stuff to convince my wife to let me start this venture. At this point I am actually considering pursuing a few genetic projects, as well as running open pollinated preservation projects to ultimately offer to the public. But this would be far down the road as I believe it takes time to truly find a gem worthy of sharing. All in all, I got lucky because I’m currently a stay at home dad, who went back to school to get his masters. It’s hellish at times but because I’m at home it’s alittle easier to just poke my head into the room and make slight adjustments.

In regard to open pollination I would venture five seeds, if open pollinated together, would produce a decent mix of phenotypes from the original breeders line. This would be enough to play with but it’s worth noting that you need quality genetics from the start or the endeavor is mute.

Concerning Snow, I have learned through diving through numerous threads that hes pretty far in the weeds with orders and hasn’t been heard from in six plus months. The place where I bought some of his gear is direct from the breeder and when I contacted them they emulated the six month pause in receiving new stuff from him. Bodhi, on the other hand, had a website and while I’ve never ordered from him it seems pretty simple. Ace is simply a carrier for Romulan Genetics, Romulan BX1. I bought my stuff right from the breeder Jake who sells “picture frames,”.

Do you only grow outside? I understand that, I had hosts of issues back in the day growing outdoors in the Michigan cornfields haha. That destroyer is looking tasty so I would consider it but that Nanou description of, “acid-like trippiness,” was pretty intriguing.

Automation isn't feasible for me either. Hell indoors isn't with the price of electricity in Los Angeles. Thankfully the sun is free. I'm in the peocess of figuring out how to get my soil as cheap as possible. I reuse it but last season it was either to hot and\or the pH was off, trial and error...
What genetic and open pollenation projects are you looking at?
I'm not sure I have genetics people want preserved but I'll happily preserve them for myself which was my plan from the start.
I'm there with you on finding a gem not seeming like an easy feat.

The more I read on this the more I wonder if my choices were good ones.
I have mostly Ace which seems like a fine choice as does Doc D. I have sd ibl from katsu but may save those til I can do indoors or just decide I want to try sd outside. I've read its a finnicky beast and likes a cold room to bring out the terps ones looking for. I have a few others that I cant think of but honestly the only one that comes to mind that I question is Cum Laude (positronics) and that's only because from the very short reading I've done on it based on memory from 3+ years ago I wonder if the genetics are what is said. I vaguely remember reading the end of posi and how things were dealt with wasnt the greatest BUT this is from my flawed memory and it is the internet...

Im debating a small ~80$ greenhouse from amazon but I may build one as its possibly cheaper, I'll have to price it.
The acid trippy is what drew me to nanan. The pearl pheno is what drews to destroyer. Hopefully colorado sativas started with seed stock that has the possibility of pearls in it. Ive read at some point the recipe changed a bit and it was either impossible or highly unlikely to get it.

Hopefully I can get some seeds from that site in time for this season. If not, next. Ive been looking at a few things...

@Abdthi1966 your plants are looking good. CS has some great strains. I’m starting to grow from him again. I’ve got a 600w hps on the way for an empty 4x4. These seeds are going to flower there. On another note... did Fuji rip off Kodak? Cannon copiers rip off xerox? Or in the spirit in competitive capitalism.. sell a better cheaper product? Not sure it really matters.

What have you grown from CS? What does this grow include from them?

Thanks mate, yea the holidays were fine, always a bit mad, but fun nevertheless. I am finishing up my masters in clinical mental health counselling, and will be pursuing working in telehealth while I work on these projects.

Well now that I know you're in LA I can understand your predicament. I've personally looked at doing a simple 2x4 frame with clear poly plastic stapled to it, and it seemed pretty reasonable, for what it's worth. Personally, I'm in Vancouver WA and we don't have the best, consistent outdoor season. Thus I have been heavily investing in designing veg, flower, and clone rooms. Hopefully by next fall I'll have my three rooms set up, and ready but at the moment I'm only, mostly done, with the first flowering room. Although I do have another 5x5 tent that I use so I supposed that counts as a semi finished space.

In regard to genetic projects, I tend towards landrace descended varieties, and have plans for a lot of projects, as I am hoping to become a vendor here someday after I establish myself. I left for ten plus years from anything Cannabis related and only returned a year ago to pursue some old dreams that I just couldn't let go of. However, it's going to take some time, as I don't want to be another pollen chucker who comes and goes. Therefore, my plan is just to document what I'm doing for the next few while I enjoy myself, and if something comes of it, wonderful. If not? I enjoyed doing it! So that's all that really matters in the end.

As far as CS, at this point I would ever use any of his stock for breeding unless I had the opportunity to germinate hundreds of seeds to hunt through, or something truly astounding comes from this trail grow. The possibility of his stuff being mixed is just too great in my mind, at least right now. I only say that because I haven't seen his stuff come to fruition yet.

My next project is an open pollinated Romulan BX1 for making seed for phenotype hunting, as well as distributing to people in need of medical grade seeds in my immediate area. Most people I know can't afford 150$ for ten seeds, so it's the least I could do for some of these nice folks on disability struggling. I'm also OP the Wintergreen OG, and then will be crossing the nicest BX1 dads, and wintergreen mums. After that I have some ambitious ideas but I need to chew on what I got first.

I'm currently on vacation but once I get home those communion ladies should be just about begging for the chop. The Destroyers on the other hand are weeks away. Thanks for checking in, friend. I wish you luck crafting your soil, and set up for the next outdoor season.

@EnjoyingLife . I’ve grown seeds he no longer has in stock, Punta Rosa and mm x nh21 . Also had some nice Oaxacan highland golds growing. Really hefty plants I had outdoor. Couldn’t finish though. I want to get back to this strain.

FYI 100% germ rate on the nanan blacou from 2018. Dropped six. 3 popped without issue. Three others I took 220 grit and gave a light sand . Same day I had tails. I suspect if I would have been patient no need for sanding. As of last night, all six broke soil.

Week 9. Fed some molasses water today.

The communion gals look amazing and are almost solidly cloudy through, and through. I’m going to shoot for about 20 percent amber but I have yet to see the first hints even though the pistols are entirely red.

Destroyers still have a long way to go but they are heavy af, so I figured they may need a pick me up. So I gave them 4 TB black strap molasses mixed in some water. There’s really no way of telling how long these gals are going to take but I’m slowly seeing small frost covered calyxs push forth. I’m still battling some leaf damage from either PH issues or nitrogen toxicity but the overall condition of the plant isn’t bad. As someone once told me when I first started out, your growing bud not leaves, don’t sweat it….So I’m trying to chill about it. I would however like to dial in these beds since they’re the first time I’m using them. So I’m exploring some options for future projects. Overall everything looks good though. I’m loving the smell from these communion and am thinking it might be worth BXing using a Romulan dad.

Oh and I bumped up the light to 100 percent from 75 today to start blasting those destroyers

There's at least one oaxacan I'd like to grab from him. The zang caught my eye but I'm not sure I want Dutch influence. There are probably a couple others but I'd have to look on my wishlist to see what's on it and I'm not by it.

It’s funny, the one Communion branch I pollinated with destroyer pollen only produced four seeds lol. I’m honestly surprised as I took a glove I had been using to collect pollen and let that branch and it’s buds get absolutely covered. It was a small branch out of the way but still.

Start of week ten, fed some epsom salts today as I suspect I’m having some deficiencies.

The last communion gal is cloudy all the way, red hairs and look stunning but there’s no amber yet. I’m shooting for about 20 percent as her sister was all cloudy at harvest and I want to see the range of the high.

The middle destroyer hybrid is all white pistols and is showing no signs of stopping, other then those pesky deficiencies.

The farthest destroyer lady that I can now properly see has quite a few red pistols but little resin, although the colas are very heavy. I’m just keeping an eye on them.

First communion lady was a total disappointment, yield wise (maybe 14 grams). It was in a bad spot but nevertheless I didn’t expect it to be that pathetic. The superior sister just got chopped today so I have higher hopes for her.

I will do an in-depth review at some point but the smoke on the first lady is just ok. Alittle uplifting, with some spaciness but nothing impressive. The smell changed during the cure to something more toffee like, whereas the sister is still smelling like sweet tarts. This strain may be worth looking back into for her but the lines need a lot of improvement overall which I will detail in my notes after the second lady is smokeable.

The destroyers x Jarillo mixes loved the Epsom salts and the leafs started unfurling. So I have fed them a second time with an Epsom and molasses mixture. Only one is looking anywhere close but it’s hard to tell how they are leaning as they are likely F2s of the cross Gerry made. I don’t have any experience with the parents so I would love some insight if anyone can tell which way they may be leaning.

Week 11. Nothing to update on since last time really. It’s hard to know when this journey will be over but it’s an exciting ride nevertheless.

Start of week 12 and the frost is becoming visible now on both girls. The bad, they’ve been suffering from light/heat stress so I knocked down the lights from 1,000w to 750w trimmed some leaf ends and they have calmed down considerably since and seen happier. Added another top canopy fan as well.

The first lady pictured above is just starting to see some browning on the top colas while the lowers have started to turn, so I suspect it will be a few weeks yet. Here’s one of the lowers below.

My favourite gal and the one I pollinated in the back is thick and glossy while currently going through a flush of reflowering but with each layer it gets more full and frosty. Most of it’s cloudy so I’m going to push on another week and then start checking it daily.

Interesting. A lot of people seem to be pursuing mental health careers. I'd enjoy it but I'd end up playing games with some people so I know it's not in either parties best interest for me to get into that line of work.

I've thought about raised beds with telescoping pipes that I could cover with poly. Telescoping so I can close it down when the weather is nice. Wasnt sure how long the poly would last if I did that so it never came to fruition.
I've thought about the 2x4 frame with poly and\or doing it lean to style as it'd make it cheaper. I've thought about a lean to with plexiglass. I sent back a small greenhouse because the light was very green inside and I wasn't sure the plants would get what they need. I reach paralysis by analysis ALL the TIME

Are you breaking a room into three or using multiple rooms to reach your goal? Do you plan on doing no til\living soil, organic, hydro, aquaponic, salt based ferts?

I had a hard time bringing myself to buy CS' work only because of the possibility of it not being pure, but in the end decided beggars can't be choosers(their prices) comes into play and for 35$ w\o worries of customs and the chance to have genetics I missed... well I pulled the trigger and I'll likely do it again as there are a couple more I want but I'd like to grow atleast one pack out first.

Hmm….great question. There’s a complex answer involved but the short of it is that I had an aptitude towards the work, personally, and academically which led me to choosing it for pragmatic reasons. I went back to school later in life so part of it was simply money, and the other bit was wanting to help people in some capacity, and not feel like a drone worker.

I’m really liking the raised beds myself but mixing custom soil has a heavy price tag for sure. I would personally go for the 2x4 and poly. I’m doing one of those for an open pollinated landrace variety this summer.

As far as the wintergreen OG and Romulan project I shifted gears after the wintergreen wouldn’t pop and joined up with some good friends for a joint venture. Besides they were pretty old seeds, and the seedbay is sending me a replacement but it made me think that I’ll save them for next winter, and really be anal about germination protocol with that one. As it stands the plan is too OP the BX1 Romulan like before but also add a few choice Oregon blueberry cuts that a friend in my collective has. I’ve smoked it many of times and even grew some of here sisters back in the day and let me tell you it takes you floating mate. While it’s not rare to this area if you know the right people, it’s a superior cut of DJs original blueberry line before he lost some of his reputation.

I have four or five rooms now depending on how you slice it, and have joined with a few close friends to form a collective that focuses on breeding with older genetics (year 2000 and below roughly, not to say that there aren’t exceptions to that). But overall, you could say my projects have escalated a lot in recent months. I spent ten years waiting to have the space for a full set up to do this so I’m pretty excited. Should be launching and becoming an official vendor with my group this summer with the Blueberry x Romulan and then in fall we should have the first of the true Highland Kush landrace seeds available.

I thought she would be chopped by now based on the known flowering times for either parent but she’s still going strong. The lady in front is just starting to start the initial browning and definitely looks frosty.

The longest Ive seen in past diaries was a Thai leaning destroyer pheno that went 17 weeks but it was heavily Thai leaning and the beginning scale is 10 weeks for Jarillo leaning parents. If the lady in the back stops shooting out new pistols it should only be a couple of weeks but you never know with theses Sativas.
I forgot how tough waiting this long can be but honestly I’m having fun. It’s good prep for my long term project which involves a 20 plus week princess from Jamaica. So I can’t start complaining at 13 weeks but it is a good moment to take a step back, and take a deep breath to recenter.

It actually made me regret popping one of the purple satellite mixes recently because I realized one of the parents goes for 16+ weeks sometimes. Even if purple satellite is normally an eight weeker the F2 generation is going to have a lot of variation for most people to commit to. I think for that reason alone you have to be careful with the time commitment, otherwise you can’t beat the price.

What was the purple satellite crossed with?

I agree. He should list them all as F2 out of respect for the breeders too
