Getting off the "Bottle".... how I DIY ALL my nutes.

Hi all. Long time grower here. Been on this forum for about 11 years now. Wanted to share with you all my journey through the "nutrient jungle" and how I came to making all my own nutes.
As a noob grower I was totally hooked on growing with what I perceived as the best nutes out there. For me that meant Advanced Nutrients. They were expensive and the line was huge. They had like 15 different bottles at the time, maybe more. I was fully convinced to get the most bang for my plant I needed to use as many as I could...haha.
I would see videos of Big Mike throwing huge parties with playboy models and such and thought how cool. Then I thought wait hows he doing all that. He must sell a ton of nutes. As I read more and educated myself better on growing. I realized what a lot of us have come to know is that Big Mike can throw huge parties cause of ME/US buying his water.
I started my research on dry nutes and Jacks was where I started. Slowly as I switched to Jacks I thought I can make all this shit myself with dry ingredients...Keep costs waaay down, keep it fresh and make it to the strength I like. All big wins! It has taken me a couple years to get there but my results speak for themselves.
Here is what I do and use.
Main what you would call A & B plant food.
Jacks 3 2 1. I make this with of course the jacks and epsoms. I have R/O, UV sterilized, 0ppm start water.
Main supplement.
Cal-Mag. I make this with Cal nit(part b jacks)Epsoms and Iron sulphate 5% Same as Botanicare
Silica Blast. I make this with Potassium Silicate. Same as Bontanicare
Hydroguard. I make this with the strain of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. Same as Bontanicare.
Mono Potassium Phosphate. I use this if I feel I need a bloom booster. Its the same as Bontanicares Hydroplex product.
So that is all folks! I keep it simple I grow in RDWC. This creates a stable, nutrient rich, clean environment for my plants roots. I don't use anything else. You can see all this in action in my diaries.
IMG_7067 - Copy.JPG IMG_7066 - Copy.JPG power si.png IMG_7065 - Copy.JPG
Could not find a good picture of the Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as mine is all in solution. It is just another dry powder.

It is so easy to use these items. I mix up a stock concentrate solution of these. This allows me to use it EXACTLY like bottled nutes. How I do this with Jacks for example is mix a 100X concentrate. Keep the concentrates in separate bottles and then dole them out at the 15ml per gallon or so to get to full strength Jacks. I do the same with the other items. Just weigh out the correct amount, put into a quart of water and mix...Bam...Bobs your uncle you got nutes. I can keep stuff fresh this way and if I want to make changes in the makeup or strength I can!
Lets talk about cost savings. They are huge. I bought Jacks in 25lb bags. I use 85, 65 and 30 grams each time I make 64oz. That is of all 3 parts. It is literally a few cents per bottle that I would pay $35.00 for a pair for. I have enough for years. The adds are a big savings as well. You use barley a few grams of dry to get 32oz and those bottles are expensive to. Anywhere from $15 to 45$ a quart that you are making for pennies.
Here is a very detailed breakdown of costs.
Jacks A...cost $70.38 delivered. 25 lb bag. Cost per qt for 100X concentrate. .52 cents. (These were last years prices)
11339 grams in 25 lbs. Cost per gram is .0062 cents. I use 80 grams of this to make 32oz.
Jacks B...cost $59.85 delivered. 25 lb bag. Cost per qt for 100x concentrate. .34 cents.
11339 grams in 25 lbs. Cost per gram is .0052 cents. I use 65 grams of this to make 32oz.
Epsoms, part C. $6.00 delivered. 5 lb bag. Cost per qt for 100x concentrate. .05 cents.
2268 grams in 5lbs. Cost per gram is .0026 cents. I use 30 grams to make 32oz.
Total cost for 2 qts of Jacks 321 100x concentrate is .91 cents. Cost for a comparable A and B nute would be $30.00 plus.
That's a savings of $29.09. Significant if you ask me.
The same is true for the adds I use...huge discounts mixing it yourself. Another advantage is I am never out of something I need late on a Sunday night when all the stores are closed...
So don't be scared get out there and do it yourself!! All you really need is a accurate scale, good start water and some knowledge. I use a couple old gallon nute jugs to mix my stuff up, nothing high tech there. Just shake till well dissolved. All the items are easily available shipped to you(depending on your location) I am in the US.
If you need any exact measurements or other advice please ask. More than happy to share.
Have a great day all.
Peace, negative.

Very happy with my nutrient mix. I am still learning with LEDs tho. Picked up a lot of good tips over the last year or so. I can honestly say these are some of the best buds I have grown in my life. Led makes a quality product. I have seen no reduction of taste, potency, smell or trichome coverage. In fact the lower buds are way better than under HID's. Rock solid nugs down at the 24" line below canopy. I have never had better yields either. The coverage of these lights just cant be beat.
I have grown plenty with traditional bottled nutes and all the adds. You don't need it!
Full disclosure. Some of these pictures I may have used a couple other items. I have experimented with Sweet Raw and some Tribus and Mammoth P at times. Those made no difference in my final product compared to runs without in my opinion. I have dropped them all.
Hope some of you make the switch. Appreciate the nice comments there Creeperpark
Have a great day all!

Your results do speak for themselves, negative.

I've been thinking about this very subject recently and you've made it easy to accomplish.

I just got three clones to transplant today so they will be the test, thanks! :tiphat:

Thanks for the nice comments CosmicGiggle and 420PyRos. Hell yeah. You should do a diary so we can watch along. I just got going again after a 1 year layoff due to injury. Full DIY Jacks grow. Good to be back at it. If you need any help with the dosages or mixing or ratios let me know. Glad to help out.
One of the reasons I like this simple style is it allows the plants to naturally express their qualities. Lets them really show you what they can do. Plus the cost savings.
I did a bit of math to figure what a 32 gallon rez change costs for me with the Jacks DIY. So with the A, B, Cal mag, hydroguard and silica all factored in it is about $1.12. This gets my total cost for a 10 week grow for nutes to about $13.44. I use RDWC so 1 rez change per week x the 1.12 gets the final number. Cheap as chips.
Thanks. Peace, negative.

I'd love to, but the Mrs. kinda preventing me at the moment from growing. I haven't put a seed in soil for a bloody year now myself.

Saving ideas though until that time comes again. I also use the Advanced Nutrients, the FoxFarms, General hydro etc but costs a fortune these days so this seems intriguing.

Sorry to hear you got injured man.

Hi all. Going to keep touting the benefits of making your own and using Jacks.
A interesting note on Jacks. Jacks tells you exactly what is in what you are using. The exact breakdown of every element. They also promote a REALISTIC feeding strength. This something that in the past I was very skeptical of. I would go by the dosage recommendations on Advanced bottles and my meter would not read how high the PPM was because it was so high....wtf? Then of course everyone says go 1/4 or 1/2 strength. Yes that is correct but why would the maker recommend so much??? Because they want to sell you more of it. I lost all respect and belief in Advanced when I finally learned that.
Jacks does not say use 4 times more than you should...no they tell you to use just what is required for crops....your needs may vary slightly. Jacks also does not have 14 different adds they promote by grouping them and titling them things like "master grower bundle" They do have some different formulas for specific things but that makes sense.
I am pretty sure this is because Jacks started with real world legal food production farmers as there main customers. They had to give realistic food levels or face not being used. I mean if some farmer burned 90% of his crop cause they recommended 4 times the feeding strength that shit would get around quick and they would be done!!
Just some of my stoner thoughts on why Jack kicks ass!
Enjoy the day, I know I am. Feeling so much better with my back and such. Also helps loving the way my plants look. I forgot how much enjoyment I get out growing some sexy plants. :smoke:
Peace, negative.

I always think less is best. Marketing is at high level, and there X3 more bottles these days. Before 2000, there are less products in growshops, and weed was good all the same.
I grow full orga and hydro, and I think it is one of the simple recipe I read on the subject.
Good work man!

Love it. I switched to Jack's and making my own stock solutions recently. Following.
That is great to hear! How are things going with the switch? Having any issues? What type of concentrate strength do you mix it to?
I am doing some more math today calculating costs to make a run with the FULL Advanced line. I think people will be shocked when I total up the cost for all the snake oil they sell. I would 100% stack my buds up right next to ANY Advanced grown stuff with pride. Love to see a side by side comparison.
Will post up some numbers when I get them. Takes awhile when you have about 13 products to do the math on. Jacks for the win....oh and just another disclosure. I have no affiliation with Jacks and I get nothing for free from anyone. So I got no dog in the fight. Just want people to grow good meds with little expense.
Peace all, negative.

Here is the elemental breakdown of Jacks 321 when used at full strength if anyone is interested. Its sweet. These numbers are in PPM 500 scale...I use EC.....:whistling:

142.6 Nitrogen (N)
49.8 Phosphorus (P)
205.3 Potassium (K)
93.1 Magnesium (Mg)
114 Calcium (Ca)
119.3 Sulfur (S)
2.863 Iron (Fe)
0.143 Zinc (Zn)
0.476 Boron (B)
0.143 Copper (Cu)
0.085 Molybdenum (Mo)
0.476 Manganese (Mn)
0.000 Silica (S)
0.000 Sodium (Na)
0.000 Chloride (Ci)
728.286 Total
This info is available out there. Just trying to put it all in 1 place for you all.

This can be adjusted to suit your individual needs by you!!
My little lawn is so fucking green...I dump my rezes out onto it over the summer. Great way to use that nutrient rich water...or on veggies. Getting double usage out of a already super inexpensive product. Hell ya!
Side note...just got invited to a Dinner dealy with a bunch of Lawyers...lol. That is not my style but be fun to go with some fatties rolled of GG4 see how that goes over....all legal where I live. Cept that minor detail about public consumption....
Peace, negative.

So far so good. Still on my first run with it, and mostly I just feel like I should have done it sooner. I was feeding by EC when I was using liquid nutes, so the dosing part wasn't a huge change. I made two solutions...1g of Part A and .33g of epsom salt per 10 ml of water in one bottle. Two-thirds of a gram of calnit per 10 ml of water in another. Made a gallon of each. Just makes the mixing math easy.

I did the math on the per-gallon cost of nute solution before I switched, and at the volumes I was buying, my cost went from 64 cents per gallon to 11. If I ever get the big bags of Jack's, it will be closer to five.

We continue today with the next mix. This one is for Cal Mag. I try to copy Botanicares mix.
This is the mix I use for a gallon of Cal Mag. You can adjust this to suit your needs. One of the advantages of this style.
So amount of product and costs here...
5.8 grams Cal Nit. Cost is .0052 cents per gram...so total of .03016 cents.
2.25 grams Epsoms. Cost is .0026 cents per gram...so total of .00585 cents.
.30 grams Iron EDTA. Cost is .025 cents per gram...so total of .0075 cents.
Ok this makes a gallon you can apply at similar rates as Botanicare suggests.
Botanicare cost about $45.00 delivered. Per gallon.
My cost for a gallon....drum roll please...... .04351 Cents for a fricken gallon!!!
I know these numbers sound unreal but they are true!
This is one of the reasons nute companies can afford to advertise so much...the profit margins are astronomical.
Have a great day all!

So with that concentration your are pretty close to my mix.
Yours per 1000ml
100 g A
66.6 g B
33.3 G Epsoms
Mine is
85 g A
65 G B
30 Epsoms ..... so very similar.
Pretty handy to be able to mix a stock solution and use just like your used to! Makes switching a no brainer.
One of the reasons the 100 X concentrate is so popular is that is works perfectly with the Dosatron setting at 1 to 100 ratio. It also makes for some easy math.

I’m working on the same thing with liquid fertilizers from big box stores. The main ones are fish emulsion 5-1-1 and bloom 0-10-10. Between those two I can mix ratios for veg, early flower and late flower. 2tbsp per gal fish makes 10-2-2 and then 5ml of bloom makes 10-5.3-5.3 for veg - something like that. Feed twice a week in soil but it could probably take up to 5-6 times every 2wk.
Then to get the ph down to 6.5-7 I add up to 1 tbsp vinegar or baking soda. The bloom fertilizer has the potash which is extremely acidic so I add baking soda for that one.
It’s about $40 for 2 years of continuous grows using big box store nutrients which isn’t as cheap as you but pretty easy and convenient.

Yes Sir...this is what I am talking about. We can do more with less. Quit getting played by fancy packaging and salesman speak. I don't know about you guys but I always feel better about doing something myself than paying for it to be done. Great work PolyChucker.
Love to hear more of these stories.

Hi all. Gonna keep posting up info on Jacks. They have some feeding schedules specifically designed for cannabis growing. Thought I would share that here.
3-2-1_1GallonRates_v0120210609_DPG1024_1.jpg

This for the 1 gallon mix. Again just trying to compile all this info into 1 thread. Make it easy to find for others.
If you did not know I have a diary going documenting my current grow...all done DIY with Jacks. Check it out to see the progress/results!

Hi all. Keep pushing this to the top see people can see whats up!
This week lets go over making Botanicare's Hydroguard or a version of it...
I use this always, in every rez. I have had trouble with the company I got it form before so searched out a new source...think I have a good 1.
I am going to use this.
bondi2.jpg
It is a super concentrate of the same ingredient, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, but at a much higher level per ML. Botanicares is 10,000 CFU's per ML. This is 10 BILLION CFU's per ML...lol...a bit more eh? So you can use it as is in a VERY small amount. Or you can mix a stock solution similar to the strength of Hydroguard and use it the same way.
It goes a long way to. This product is about half of what 1, 32 oz bottle of Hydroguard costs. It will make 96- ish gallons at Hydroguards concentration......hahahahahha. Man these nute companies must laugh all the way to the bank! If you break that down it costs about .04 cents to make a QT.
This is the first time I have used this and will report back on my results. I feel like it will go great tho.
Peace, negative.
