the Mexican Landraces Thread

I'm no veteran or expert, and I may be completely off-base, but I'm just not convinced that the width of the leaves is - on its own - an adequate indicator of "sativa" or "indica" heritage. I wasn't there back in the day, to grow the classics, but I've seen pics, and I've read some of R.C.C.'s descriptions, and he certainly referenced broad-leafed morphology in "pure" Mexican cultivars such as Oaxacan. Additionally, can we disregard the impact of propagating a strain in a non-native environment over a span of decades, often under artificial lighting? Might that not manifest attributes not expected from the plant in its more "natural" condition?

Of course I wouldn't be too terribly surprised to discover that most of these available heirloom Mexicans have been hybridized for shorter flowering, increased yield, etc. I'm just not so sure that the width/shape of the leaves is the smoking gun.

you are right. the smoke is what decides about quality, not shape of leaf. narrow leaf is developed by plant for intense sun and higher humidity. and that is case of whole Mexico. intense sun. thats why when we see it is more broad, we think it is mixed. but its true that broader can smoke better than narrower leaf. herb must be judged by smoking it.

Yes, I've personally speculated (no science though - just a layman's musings) that a system which uses some sort of latitude, altitude, and general climate matrix could be more useful for classification than the general sativa/NLD vs indica/BLD paradigm. That said, many areas in Mexico are not especially humid, and there are arid regions as well. Hell, Oaxaca is dryer on average than the midwest US, where I live, and if solar radiation maps can be trusted, large portions of the Middle East receive more sunlight than some parts of Central and South America. I think this whole classification "problem" is far more nuanced than it may appear.

Good discussion!

A radio DJ on the rock and roll station I listened to back then, got the nickname "Paraquat Kelly" leading a public campaign to stop that spraying. The pot was being chopped and brought in anyways, and people didn't want to smoke the chemicals, for the permanent lung damage it caused.

logically when there is war on cannabis, lot of impractical genetics get lost. war means destruction. and pure nlds are impractical in comparison with hybrids. grow big and tall and thats why it is easily visible from sky. flowers too long, when you need to chop quickly before police comes. and when they use indica from 70s or sooner, it is all probably lost. but you can go to Senegal. where they still grow mexican genetics imported from Mexico in 50s. pure nld.

About Senegal only i can find is this
However, medicinal Cannabis indica was widely grown long before the
1960s marijuana boom. Colonial test farms included indica in Portuguese
Angola (beginning in 1803), and French Senegal (late 1800s).

Where did you find the info that Mexican seeds were imported into Senegal from Mexico in the 1950s?

Oazacan haze f1. Two females were lightly pollinated with a Mexican leaning male. I'll use all seven plants for the repro but I hope to do the unthinkable and select towards the wider leaved plants in f2 to bring out the Mexican side as much as possible.

I like to let the plants branch out and then pollinate starting from the lower buds upwards. That way I can save the main cola for smoking and get something useful from the popcorn buds too. I do also like making a few seeds from the very first flowering tips. I sleep better that way.

I just smelled my fingers after LSTing the stems and the smell is almost pure menthol! I don't know what it means but at least they're not bland.
