"Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo."

"It is important that we put daimoku first. We must start by earnestly chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. Why do we chant? To strengthen our lives and bring out our potential to the fullest extent.

"Nichiren Daishonin writes: 'The mighty sword of the Lotus Sutra [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo] must be wielded by one courageous in faith. Then one will be as strong as a demon armed with an iron staff' (WND-1, 412).

"We need to break through the limitations of our lesser self and devote ourselves wholeheartedly to spreading the Mystic Law—discarding the negligent tendency to cut corners and do the least amount of work possible and the arrogance to think that our own shallow strategies will somehow carry us through. Nothing is more powerful than chanting daimoku based on the vow to win for the sake of kosen-rufu."

Faith is a constant battle between the Buddha and the devilish negative forces. It is important therefore to tackle each and every obstacle that comes our way, and win over it!
Let's advance with daimoku as the fundamental action in any challenge.

"Wherever you work, don’t be passive, but strive with the spirit that you are a person with an active role and responsibility in your workplace. If you do so, it will be challenging, but it will also be very rewarding. Moreover, nothing is more enjoyable than improving and developing yourself through your work. Regarding your workplace simply as a place where you earn your living is such a waste."

"If in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is just such a 'diligent' practice."

"Birth, aging, sickness, and death are all part of the human condition. No one can avoid facing illness at some point in their life.

"In a letter of encouragement to the lay nun Myoshin, the Daishonin notes that her husband, through his long struggle with illness, had now been motivated to seek the Buddha way day and night without cease (cf. WND-1, 938).

"Falling ill is not a result of weak faith. Falling ill, however, can serve as an opportunity for us to strengthen our faith further, as well as a crucial turning point in our human revolution, enabling us to deepen our state of life towards attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime. When we fearlessly confront illness, we can awaken to just how precious our life is. And when we stay aligned to the Mystic Law throughout all, we can perceive the eternal life-state of Buddhahood within us.

"In a letter to Shijo Kingo and his wife whose infant daughter was seriously ill, the Daishonin declared: 'If we consider the power of the Lotus Sutra [Nam-myoho-renge-kyo], we will find perpetual youth and eternal life before our eyes' (WND-1, 413).

"No matter what sickness or adversity may befall you or a loved one, I hope you will chant powerful daimoku that resounds throughout your family like an invincible lion’s roar to triumph over all obstacles. Please encourage and set an example for others through achieving a brilliant life of victory imbued with the four noble virtues of eternity, happiness, true self, and purity."

When we read the Gosho with our entire being, the path to victory unfolds. Let's light that flame of conviction in the depths of our hearts! Let's be the heros and heroines of the two ways of practice and study*!

Daisaku Ikeda

*Gosho - The True Aspect of All Phenomena - (WND 1, page 386), "Exert yourself in the two ways of practice and study. Without practice and study, there can be no Buddhism. You must not only persevere yourself; you must also teach others. Both practice and study arise from faith. Teach others to the best of your ability, even if it is only a single sentence or phrase."

"Be resolved to summon forth the great power of faith, and chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with the prayer that your faith will be steadfast and correct at the moment of death."

"In The Record of the Orally Transmitted Teachings, Nichiren Daishonin states: “Our head corresponds to myo, our throat to ho, our chest to ren, our stomach to ge, and our legs to kyo. Hence this five-foot body of ours constitutes the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo” (OTT, 28).

"The ultimate essence of Buddhism is not something remote or separate from our life. The body we have received from our parents is a supremely respectworthy entity of the Mystic Law. Consequently, when we chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, and use our mind, body, and voice for the sake of the Law, for the happiness of others, and for the realisation of peace based on the humanistic principles of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, the supreme wisdom and boundless power of the Buddha will unfailingly well forth from within our life.

"Faith in the Mystic Law offers an unsurpassed way to good health. With a vigorous morning and evening gongyo as our foundation, and also with the firm determination to lead a life of good health, let us live each day brimming with vibrant energy and vitality.

"As SGI members, all of you are working to fulfill a profound mission for kosen-rufu. As a result, your lives may be busier than most. Please try to use your time wisely, in the most valuable way you can, and also get sufficient sleep. For if you overdo things and let yourself become exhausted, you’ll run the risk of falling ill. 'Life is the foremost of all treasures' (WND-1, 1125), writes the Daishonin. I hope you will act as your own skilled physician and nurse, taking care to stay fit and healthy and to eat a sensible diet."

"The London Summer Olympics, a global festival of peace, will soon begin.

"It goes without saying that the key to success in sports, in youth, and in all aspects of life, is momentum. Success and vibrant growth are found where there is momentum, be it in the life of an individual or in an organisation. Therefore, let us advance joyfully and spiritedly, with the 'momentum of a charging lion' and the 'momentum of splitting bamboo.'

"The Lotus Sutra speaks of a lion’s powerful momentum, referring to 'the power that has the lion’s ferocity' (cf. LSOC15, 258). When we chant daimoku, which is like the roar of a lion, our lives are filled with this overflowing life force; we can face any problem or challenge with the momentum of a charging lion and triumph over them, transforming suffering into joy.

"In the East, unstoppable momentum has also long been likened to the process of splitting a bamboo stalk. How can we create such unstoppable momentum? The Daishonin writes: 'The situation is like the joints in a piece of bamboo: if one joint is ruptured, then all the joints will split' (WND-1, 512). It is important, therefore, that we chant strongly and specifically about each problem or challenge facing us, take resolute action, and emerge victorious. It doesn’t matter if the challenge is small or seemingly ordinary. The key is to pledge to complete it and then carry out that pledge, with sincerity and persistence, until we’ve accomplished what we set out to do. That is like splitting the first joint in a bamboo stalk; it creates tremendous momentum for every subsequent challenge. It becomes the momentum for human revolution and the momentum for eternal victory in both youth and life."

The Daishonin encourages us to be filial towards our father and mother.* Showing how much we have developed and improved is the very best way to be filial to them. Repaying the debt of gratitude that we owe to somebody is the very essense of Buddhism. Let's shine by always having a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation!
