Vape injury update: CDC confirms vitamin E acetate as ‘very strong culprit’

David Downs
November 8, 2019

Our long national vaping injury nightmare might be turning a corner.
On Friday, Nov. 8, in a teleconference, the US Centers for Disease Control said it had its first suspect in the thousands of cases of vaping-associated pulmonary injury, which has killed 39.
CDC doctor Anne Schuchat said Friday that it has identified a “very strong culprit” hiding inside illicit market THC vaporizer cartridges. Investigators located vitamin E acetate—a new cutting agent in vape pens—in 29 of 29 lung fluid samples from patients in 10 states. Other toxins were “notably not detected,” Dr. Schuchat said. Leafly first identified the problem chemical on Aug. 30.
“For the first time, we have detected a potential toxin of concern, vitamin E acetate, from biological samples from patients,” said the principal deputy director of the CDC. The samples “provided evidence of vitamin E acetate at the primary site of injury in the lungs.”

The CDC had been searching since mid-August for what substance is causing a rash of lung injuries nationwide—dozens of mostly young men with acute respiratory distress syndromes and lung damage that looked like lipoid pneumonia, chemical pneumonitis, or organizing pneumonia. Many potentially unsafe materials can lurk in street THC carts, including pesticides, heavy metals, and solvents like butane.
In September, New York health authorities first spotted vitamin E acetate in samples from patients. The FDA started finding the chemical in victims’ THC oil samples thereafter. Since then, tests by Cannasafe and Anresco Labs in California have confirmed the chemical is contaminating most street THC cart supplies. Utah investigators found the chemical in most of the carts it could test from VAPI victims in that state.
Other contaminants lurking in vape pens can contribute to lung injury. “Many products and substances are still being investigated,” Schuchat said. Leafly tested the Dank Vapes and Rove carts of one Utah VAPI victim and found another vitamin E chemical, alpha-tocopherol, plus high levels of lead and sky-high levels of dozens of pesticides.

But vitamin E acetate is likely the main offender. Industrial chemical manufacturers warn against inhaling the substance, found in foot creams and children’s gummy vitamins. Manufacturers’ safety data sheets advise fresh air and medical help if exposed to tocopheryl-acetate aerosols.
According to Leafly reporting, in 2018 a vape industry supply wholesaler in Los Angeles began diverting the cosmetics ingredient into the US’ illicit vape cart supply chain, starting a massive new trend. Tocohperyl-acetate can now be found in 60% of the pens on the street, or about 50 million cartridges, industry operators estimate.

Didn't mean it that way. Just that tainted carts were first brought to my (and others) attention first by this thread and those 2 participants. And, tainted carts led to discussions of vitamin E acetate. No particular specific reference

Did you somehow take offense to that? Sorry, if you did. :)

i see honey cut getting hit hard but no one mentions true shitstains fucking bullshit actions

They do mention that the FDA is also reviewing the other diluents used. Given the breath of the outbreak and the deaths, I believe all diluents will receive close scrutiny and regulation will follow...……….

Ya, we knew that months ago here in this thread. Watching the fake news having a field day with their vaping crisis hysteria was really disappointing. I wonder how many people went back to cigarettes because of all the bullshit the media spread around.

From TT:

The next generation of Viscosity is here.

We've partnered with Dr. Jeff Raber and The Werc Shop to reformulate Viscosity using ONLY terpenes found natively in the cannabis plant. The all-new Viscosity is made up of just phytol, beta-caryophyllene, D-limonene, farnesol, and nerolidol.
That’s it. Full ingredient transparency.

As always, Viscosity is formulated to our True Grade™ standards utilizing ultra-refined isolated terpenes. Manufactured in our cGMP facilities which adhere to ISO 9001:2015 and FSSC 22000 standards.

Did anyone at TT lose their job over the viscosity sample?

Weeks back I saw someone post on True Terpenes FB page asking if there was going to be any more "tomfoolery".

They responded something like - No our quality control person put an end to that.

Did they have one before, that lost their job? Still the Same person? Or was this position created because of this scandal.

vitamin E has a terpene side chain so was likely how they felt ok saying "terpene mix." kinda half truth. Many feel that all terpenes are 100% safe.

No they're just relying on the accurately assumed blanket of ignorance over the legal Cannabis industry as a whole. They use PLENTY of non terps. Geosmin, for example, would be used for anything with an unflushed organic profile. Not a terp. Or any "skunk" blend, defiantly a sulfur hydroxl as there is no such thing as a skunk terpene.

Read the product categories the FDA contractor approved

Read the product categories the FDA contractor approved

The part I like is

" if breathed in, move person to fresh air."
"Skin contact: wash off with plenty soap and water. CONSULT A PHYSICIAN "( TT told us to touch it, because mineral oil won't absorb in our skin like viscosity)
And my favorite-
"Precautions for safe handling:
avoid inhalation of vapours or mist."

We can't breathe it or touch it, but it's cool to vape it and breath it?

Also thought it was funny that the viscosity of Viscosity was not available.

I didn't see tobacco products.

Sooo, come back in 10 years when all the people who did it are dead or declared bankruptcy. That seems to be the American Way

There are a couple of issues involved. One is justice with regard to paying for their deeds in the criminal justice system, which is pretty methodical and careful reaching indictment, because peoples lives and livelihood are at stake in addition to the victims.

The other is financial reparation, and there are more lawyers in the USA, than the rest of the world combined, because we are a "country of laws", written by lawyers.

Sadly what that means is that those with the most money are able to manipulate the system with misdirection, ploys, and plaudits, so that it is even slower than the criminal justice system, and beyond the reach of most individuals without a large firm behind them on contingency.

Class action lawsuits by large law firms on contingency are more likely to succeed, and after years of litigation it is the attorneys whom walk away with the greater share.

It isn't right, or funny, and I would suggest talking to your elected official about getting it changed, but they are most likely an attorney and if not, that is who they will trying to push it through.

The same jolly folks who voted their own separate health and retirement plan and are disinclined to adjust it to Social Security levels.

If it makes you feel better, you should know that it only feels kinky the first time...……...

Heart goes out to those who have been negatively affected. Crazy looking back on this thread, all the supporters of cart vaping. Why would anyone trust a product that has been cut with anything? The justifications are ridiculous. Put the computer cigarettes down. Vape flower or uncut extracts, preferably only dry sift or bubble hash (minimal post processing). Dabbers and cart vapored completely ruined the scene. They are doing a great job providing justification for not legalizing cannabis. If that shit never came about we would be much further down the road to legalization than we are now. To this day, the normal American consumer has no idea what is in the carts they purchase from the dispensary. Folks put 100% of their trust in the company that is taking their money. That’s why they compare this industry to big Tobacco. Stop buying carts and stop supporting those businesses. If you continue to do so, you are truly an addict. Smoke/vape raw flower or minimally processed concentrates, or eat edibles if you’ve abused your lungs. Anything else is addict level using for the sake of getting high without regard for ones body or mind.
