SMOKERS-BOYCOTT MANDALAY BAY IN LAS VEGAS

I'm calling on all marijuana smokers and their friends/faamily to boycott the Mandalay Bay Hotel Casino for allowing and then disallowing a marijuana related convention. This story below happened when the organizer of the event went in for a meeting to discuss security concerns on 1-27-10.
Las Vegas has screamed and hollered about the President slamming us in the media which has caused the city to lose untold millions of dollars due to convention cancellations due to the president comments, and a big loss in tourist dollars.
Seems that if they can afford to turn away this convention/trade show and the dollars that are lost in food, lodging, gaming, etc, maybe they should just shut the fuck up and quite all the finical bitching.

This story was in the Las Vegas Review Journal Business section today-

An organizer for a marijuana-related convention in Las Vegas said he was "ambushed" when he called for a Jan. 27 meeting with law enforcement officers and Mandalay Bay officials to discuss security concerns for his March event.
He walked into a room of more than 100 Metropolitan Police Department officers, county sheriffs, undercover vice cops, surveillance and security staff from Mandalay Bay, gaming control and alcohol bureau officers.

"I felt ambushed, like Gen. Custer surrounded by Indians," Lou Woznicki of Los Angeles-based Skunk Runner Media said Friday. "It was unbelievable."
Mandalay Bay notified him the next day that the convention, Cannapalooza, scheduled for March 19-21, had been canceled. It was billed as the "largest head shop on the planet," a 50,000-square-foot marketplace for all things related to marijuana culture, from hand-blown glassware to hemp clothing and cosmetics.
Woznicki said the event was expected to draw 50,000 people and would have been good for the Las Vegas economy, especially in light of disparaging remarks from President Barack Obama about leisure and business travel to Las Vegas.
The goal was to create a "fun, safe, educational event," he said. In addition to exhibitors, guest speakers would be addressing legalization, decriminalization and medical benefits of marijuana, along with home garden technology and trends.
"I called the meeting because I wanted them to see the name and face behind the show and to assure them that I'm on board with crowd control and keeping things in order," the promoter said. "We'd hire extra security and we'd like to have Vegas law enforcement involved.
"When I walked into that room, I was amazed and shocked at the number of people. I asked, 'What are these people so afraid of?' "
Those who had registered for Cannapalooza called Mandalay Bay to inquire about the show's status and the return of their hotel room deposits. They were told organizers canceled the event, Woznicki said.
"For the record, we have never even remotely considered canceling," he said. "Our show, right from the beginning, had been carefully crafted and nurtured, and at the time we were terminated, we had amassed a huge and fervent following."
MGM Mirage spokeswoman Yvette Monet said company policy prohibits discussing details of convention business contracts.
Metropolitan Police spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said narcotics officers attended the meeting to express their concerns about marijuana possession being illegal in Nevada, but it wasn't their decision to cancel the event. That decision was made by Mandalay Bay, she said.
Woznicki said he was "enthusiastically embraced" by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and major hotels such as Caesars Palace, Bally's and Paris Las Vegas when he first pitched the event. He chose Mandalay Bay because the preferred weekend date was available.
"When I talked to them on the phone in December, I sensed there was trouble brewing. I felt there was a negative vibe there," Woznicki said. "Even at the meeting, a Mandalay Bay security guy said, 'Pot smokers don't drink and gamble and that's where we make our money. It's bad for business.' "
Las Vegas saw a 24.6 percent decline in convention attendance in 2009 and a 14.8 percent decline in the number of conventions held, the convention and visitors authority reported.
Obama chastised banks last year for planning business meetings in Las Vegas after receiving federal bailout money. On Tuesday he slammed the city again, warning Americans, "You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college."
"Vegas needs the income," said Jaren Sena of Fresh Brewed Concepts, a Las Vegas-based company that was contracted in December to do advertising and marketing for Cannapalooza. "To cancel for fear of pot smokers ... I think the economy is so bad and here's a viable means to help the economy."
Marijuana is gaining mainstream acceptance for medical use and has become a political hot button in states with huge budget deficits such as California, where some 1,000 medical marijuana distribution outlets are operating.
Sena said he had already spent a "good chunk" on national advertising for Cannapalooza, including printing 250,000 fliers, marketing heavily in Denver; Salt Lake City; Phoenix; Albuquerque, N.M.; San Diego; Los Angeles; and Orange County, Calif.
Woznicki said he paid a $10,000 deposit when he signed the contract with Mandalay Bay in September and has invested about $250,000 in advertising and public relations for the event.

The organization does not like competition.:shooty:

Do not kid ourselves, many of (not all) the ones we have purchased from for all of the prohibition years are NOT trying to legalize, legitimize or even discuss the weed. People are starting to "think".. and of course that is dangerous and not going to be tolerated :spanky:

The enemy is among us.

great idea for an event, california needs the money just move one state over. Anyways Vegas was the wrong place for a venue like that. Better to pick a legal state, not loco vegas with their pot laws

Nevada is a legal state in regards to mmj.
No cultivation laws on the books.
Possession of less than an oz is a fine.
Desperately need the convention business.

The mayor of Las Vegas called Obama "a slow learner".

I agree.

Though I support the owners of a private establishment to decide who they want to rent it to, anyone with a conscience should boycott Las Vegas entirely- it totally sucks!

I agree with the first part of your statement, but....they had already taken his deposit, signed the contracts, booked the convention space, rented the rooms. They caved into the wishes and desires of local law enforcement. This is very different than deciding who rents their space. If they didn't want them here they should have said no during or shortly after the first phone call setting it up.

OMG this is a mess! i actually scheduled to fly out there for this i'm glad i didnt buy the ticket and just requested the time off of work and called all my Vegas friends and prepared them for my visit! oh well i got the Vegas itch i'll still be going since i have the time scheduled anyways.

So you're just plain "OUT" $250k+? I find that EXCEEDINGLY difficult to believe. How about the whole story before we all start beating the war drums YET again to boycott...

You read the whole story right?
-A person request convention floor space and if accepted pays the required deposit.

-After receiving approval, this same person/entity needs to advertise to their target audience to stir up interest for those in that trade group to rent floor space to showcase their product. They do this by advertising in trade magazines, having fliers printed, promoting the event. What do you think is gonna happen? The guy is gonna book very expensive convention space and not put money into advertising it? That would be counterproductive.

-After spending this money and time, this person comes to meet with the hotel the event is to be held at in less than 1 and a half months to discuss security and is greeted by the law enforcement and hotel security, and other interest who do not want this type of event here in town.

-Now that the event has been approved, scheduled, reservations made, promotion cost spent, THEN to be advised at the last minute that your convention has been canceled during an ambush by leo and hotel excetuives you are out of every dime you spend, except the 10,000.00 deposit you paid the hotel to book the venue.

Spent monies on advertising sent out is not going to be refunded.
If their were more to it, trust me the MGM MIRAGE group would have been the first to have disputed the story that was printed. THEY HAVE NOT.

That is how they are out 250,000.00 of expenses.
The only way they may recoup any of it is to sue MGM MIRAGE for damages. And in this town, an outsider suing a casino and winning ain't gonna happen!

'Pot smokers don't drink and gamble and that's where we make our money. It's bad for business.' That says it all right there. 50,000 people in town supporting the service economy (hotels, FOOD, shows) is bad for business, because Mandalay Bay isn't going to be able to blatantly rip people off on drinks and "gambling"?
I'll probably never find myself in Mandalay Bay or Vegas, just not a place I want to go, but if anyone on this site does like to gamble this is actually a legit reason to go somewhere else.

It's ok to fuck prostitutes here, but keep that demon weed out of nevada!

Well since you're "here" you already know it's NOT ok to fuck prostitutes as prostitution is illegal in Clark County.
Now over the hill in Pahrump you can rent a lady for all night as long as you can pay the legal going price!
