They had an emergency saftey crew there that gave them constant advice, that pretty much saved their lives. They had no idea how close they were to dying.

I forget the name of it. I seen it years ago on public television.

It's about a guy who moves to the Yukon/Alaska somewhere to live off the grid. He basically makes a documentary about him surviving in the middle of nowhere. Shows him building a cabin, fireplace, hunting, storing the food away form bears, all kinds of survival shit. All he took with him was some tools like hammer, saw, axe, etc. He ended up living there for 30 or so years. It was, quite frankly, the best documentary I've ever seen.

This happened in the 60s/70s and, as far as I know, his cabin is still there.

Oh, just thought of the name: Alone in the Wilderness and the name of the guy was Dick Proenneke.

This is absolutely a must see documentary. He went there with very little and built his whole life for the next few decades. Amazing stuff. Dick Proenneke did all of the camera work and the narration also. Well, he had a friend do some camera work, but it was mostly him. Without electricity. In Alaska. Only accessed by plane landing on the lake.

His cabin is still there as he donated it to whatever forest agency. You can visit it and roam around I believe, IF you can get there. But anyway, Perpetual Nooch hits the nail on the head. That's the best documentary I've ever seen.

Ken Burns has done some awesome work, and as a baseball fan I really enjoyed his history on that.

Michael Moore is a completely biased idiot whose films since Roger and Me are pure political propaganda pieces, NOT scientific documentaries.

Also, the guy did it all after he retired from his job so he was 50ish when he decided to go up north to live in solitude. Built all his own furniture. Even made kitchen utensils out of wood. I'm telling you it is an absolutely fascinating story.

I went and checked around and it's available through torrent if you know how to get it. I downloaded it last night. Awesome.
