Which gives more Lumens ?? 600w/1000w behind glass ?

Hi

Speaking to a mate who has a cheap euro reflector with a 600w and a 1000w in a air cooled blockbuster behind glass.

He reckons he bigger/better buds frersom the 600w !!!!

Same strain/feed/enviro etc....

Surely this can not be right ??

Cheers

I'll take a shot, seeing how no one else has.

I think it depends on the strain more than anything (besides obvious factors such as whether or not the bulb/glass is clean and the age of the bulb, type of ballast etc).

I have friends who yield the same from 600s as they do from 1000s. We're not sure if it's because the strain prefers less light or if it's due to the fact that 600's output less heat and thus the room controls are controlling the environment more optimally.

You've gotta keep in mind your vegetation only grows at the rate equivalent to the most imbalanced part of the system. If you have wonderful lighting, but not the right nutrients, humidty, co2, dissolved oxygen etc etc the extra lighting goes to waste.

All are important factors to consider when you get to the stage of tweaking and optimizing your system.

Just my two cents.

ive run 600s side by side with 1000s and i always get bigger top colas from the 1kw lights even with glass on the hoods...i honestly havent even noticed a difference between running with glass or not....

Most 1000 w bulbs emit about 120,000 lumens and 600 w bulbs about 98,000 lumens... I let you work out where the value is!!!!

I'm running water cooled lights and have run 2 x 1000 and currently 3 x 600. I'm getting better results from the 600's. Not because they are better lights but a better fit for my space. Even being able to get my lights inches from the canopy w/o physically burning the plants. anything much closer than 16" is way too close. I get the best buds about 20" away. So about 16-24" above my canopy a 600 spreads perfectly and fills the space. If I had more height and another foot or 2 in each dimension. the 1k's would be a better fit.

and while 600's are definately cooler burning 3x600 put a bigger load on my chiller than the 2x1000 did.

So look at which will work better in your space rather than which has the most power. The wattage will tell you that! All things being equal and in compotent hands the 1k will always outproduce the 600.

I was running 10x600's then switched over to 6x1000's. I initially bought into the fact that watt for watt 600 produce more light then 1000. Therefore I would be yielding more with 600 than 1000. What I came to realize is that although you may have more lumen output you lack the intensity. Once switching over to 1000's my yield
increased slightly but the quality increased dramatically especially on the lower half of the plants. Hope this helps

Why bother with the lower bud, remove those branches when you turn your lights to flowering and again 2 weeks later. All the energy and concentration goes to the top, and we all want to be tops! Will greatly increase yields and all be prime-time!

Most 1000W put out 140,000 to 150,000 lumens. Most 600W put out 80-95,000 lumens. I do not believe that I have ever seen a 120,000 lumens 1000W bulb or a 98,000 lumens 600w bulb--the largest being 95,000.

A 600W puts out more lumens per watt than a 1000W. It does not put out more total light.

I'd post the link but can't find it. There's a thread here that chronicles the testing of several types of glass. The average light loss due to glass was 8 to 10%. That said, 1000 w/glass would still give more light than a bare 600.

If your friend is running a 1K magnetic ballast and its capacitor is weak, it would explain the results (check the thread in my sig). FWIW, I run both 1Ks and 600s in the same room, same clones, and there's no contest - the 1000s yield more.

Ok, I have re- read the question. The only thing I can say is that the glass must reduce lumens, or that the 1000w bulb must be older than the 600w bulb. How about that, I hope you are happy now? I see you made no effort to help with any info!

we really would need to know how close your buddy is running the 1000 from the tops versus the 600. i've never run 1000's, only 600's, and it seems like i can run the plants pretty close to the reflector. in comparison, my 400 hps runs cool enough that the plants are almost touching the tube. i'm running melonheads. it is run inline after 4 600's.

i would think the 1000w would cover a bigger area and deliver higher lux numbers throughout compared to a 600. but this is a guess.

i do know 600's are more efficient, you can get much better coverage at a great cost, than one 1000.
