Shoplifting of less than $999 now legal in several US states, Wallmart and several other retailers pull out of those states as the shoplifting rate has gone up.
Many stores have had that policy for years. It keeps the convenience store clerks alive. This has nothing to do with police and everything to do with insurance companies not covering employees if they get hurt stopping a shop lifter, or the shoplifter suing the store claiming they were injured.
That's why most stores now have a policy of just call the cops but do not confront.
