Security Cams?

I'd like to get a couple security cams for the front yard and back yard. I want something with local storage (SD cards rather than paying for monitoring). I was wondering if a wired camera could be placed in the house and positioned to look out over the area I want to monitor? I'd prefer a system that employed batteries rather than having to deal with running wires and having a base. I wouldn't mind mounting outdoors, just mount and aim the cams, but ya gotta admit,if you could place them facing through a window that's make life a bunch easier. Something that emitted one of those space lasers that everyone talks about to fry the a** of that F'ing cat that craps in my flower bed? Maybe that'll be an option for upcoming cam releases. I should suggest that to all the cam manufacturers. :)

So,who knows camera systems? I want something reliable but not overly expensive.

Trail cameras might be what you're looking for and they have camouflage models.
Some people put them on trees to take pics of animals. They can also be used for
security. They store pics on SD cards.

The DVR has to be keep at room temp, and should be secretly squirrled away, so a smart thief doesn't take it also You can hook the DVR to the internet and get remote viewing.

Having a security looking through a window doesn't work for the reflection.

That's the 1970's. She's wearing one of these back seats you stuck to on a hot summers day. The colour pallet is woodland combat. The only way to travel back that far in time, is eastern block airways.

If you want to get a good dvr and cameras, look for the hikvision or dahua brands. Install is easy but it needs some experience and tools, so unless you are into diy, better call someone to install. Altrough it's something you could put toghether in a few hours if you are good at following instructions. A single camera and just a minimal setup of the dvr is even easier, takes more to find the place to put them and run the wires, rather than the actual "specialised" install (connecting the wires/connectors and setting it up).
That being said, if the trail cameras do what you need, probably that is a better option.

First off let me thank everyone who has replied. Secondly. let me apologize for not providing enough information (and not knowing enough about cams to ask an intelligent question). I figured that trying to position a camera to look through a window was a no go due to reflection issue like flylowgethigh suggested. What I want is as basic a security camera as I can get. I prefer wireless and battery powered as there is a strong likelihood that we will be moving back to SE Asia where the power is not so dependable. (and running wire would be a challenge). That is the reason I mentioned battery powered. I also would like something that notifies my phone when there is an intrusion onto the property, as well as saves the data to an SD card. I also want to be able to pack it up and move in the event we actually decide to move back to SE Asia.

I thought that something like Arlo or Uefy (or similar) cams might fit the bill, but I am too inexperienced to make that call. Trail cams might be a good choice if they were wifi enabled, but I don't know if any would have the ability to send alerts to my phone.?.

Sounds like a trail cam. Many of the cheap one's are 2g or 3g mobile, and my network just scrapped 3g, while 2g is sketchy anywhere.
Generally battery powered with movement sensing. Store to SD and are cheap. Add mobile networks to the spec, and the price moves up considerably. To get one that's recent, and so a decent pic and modern network, it was $150 last I looked. 100$ for a older one with poor pics when targets are in motion.

There might be "smart" cameras out there to do what you need, but as many smart or all-in-one compact electronics that do a lot of features are just useless crap, you probably need to go by the reviews there, and even be ready to send it back if not what you need.

For my real job, I'm an IT contractor. One of our biggest sellers are IP based security cameras, there's not a week that goes by where we don't do something related to this. My personal recommendation would be Unifi IP cameras, they're cloud based so don't need a dedicated DVR, you can setup viewing and recording (to a limit) on your phone, as well as alerts/notifications. There are options for wireless and battery operated ones, but I would highly discourage this, for more than a few reasons. If you have a remote camera setup outside your house, not wired into anything, with all the recordings sitting on an SD card on that camera, it's going to get stolen. This happens to a lot of cameras, even those correctly wired in, second hand security cameras are a big black market seller. All your recordings are on that SD card that they now have, depending on where it's setup they have way more information than you would want them to, the times you leave and come home, your license plate, how many people reside at your house, etc... My other concern regarding wifi capability is that any hacker worth their weight in Doritos and Red Bull can get into anything Wifi based, the security is not quite there yet. My last concern is that if I'm robbing your house and I see a camera outside that isn't connected to anything, I'm not thinking it's legit and I'm gonna take your shit anyways. My view is that if you have something to protect, don't go with gimmicks, go with what is proven to work and that's not the easy road. That's my 2 cents and good luck my man.

I could hook my Xvim system to the internet, but choose not to. It was cheap and works OK, but I have had one channel drop and a cam go bad. I actually have two systems with overlapping coverage, so if the thief finds one DVR they will still be on cam with the other. There are 3 cams on each corner of my house. It must look funny to military guys flying over at night with NVG goggles.

Put a cam on your grow and look at it remotely.

I think at this juncture I may just go with the inexpensives. I'm not in a terrible hurry as harv won't start for me for a couple months. That gies me a little to further explore options and pricing.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice.
