the Supreme Court has a case in front of it right now over this. the Fifth Circuit ruled the restriction as invalid. defenders say that because it is illegal to carry a firearm when drunk, a cannabis user can also be barred. but...they don't restrict drunks 2nd amendment rights unless they actually ARE intoxicated, unlike the way they do tokers ... four hours after being shit-faced on alcohol, you are good to go. smoke a joint, lose a constitutional right. does that sound about right ?

That headlines misleading. He stated his opinion was all. Challenging it would be going to court over it. And he said that 2 days before he dropped out of the Republican primary when he was still scrambling to get votes so who knows if he actually meant it. Could have just been beating his chest trying to look like a 2nd Amendment warrior for the Republican base.

He's been anti marijuana his entire political career and opposes federal legalization. Fortunately for Floridians they get to vote on legalizing recreational marijuana this year and it looks almost certain to pass.

The proposed ballot summary is as follows:

Allows adults 21 years or older to possess, purchase, or use marijuana products and marijuana accessories for non-medical personal consumption by smoking, ingestion, or otherwise; allows Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers, and other state licensed entities, to acquire, cultivate, process, manufacture, sell, and distribute such products and accessories. Applies to Florida law; does not change, or immunize violations of, federal law. Establishes possession limits for personal use. Allows consistent legislation. Defines terms. Provides effective date.

This is cool , all because of a grassroots ballot initiative process allowing citizens to propose statutes or constitutional amendments, cutting through all the Bull. Just put on the ballot and let the people decide , nice!

Not really grassroots.

Smart and Safe Florida is sponsoring the initiative. The campaign reported $39.55 million in contributions, all from Trulieve, a marijuana dispensary company that owns medical marijuana dispensaries in Florida.

Desantis apparently doesn't let his objection to marijuana stop him from taking money for favors.

Trulieve made a $25,000 contribution to DeSantis’ political committee. Four months after, DeSantis helped kill legislation that could have capped the potency of medical marijuana sold in Florida.

Amid Trulieve’s good fortune, Thad Beshears cashed in. In August 2020, with Trulieve’s stock near what was then its all-time high, he sold 585,000 shares worth nearly $12 million. A year later, the Beshears family nursery contributed $30,000 toward DeSantis’ reelection.

Of course there always seems to be someone involved with the incentive to gain financially, But the ballot initiative process it truly a grassroots process. It may have been organized and promoted by a greedy corporation but the power ultimately lies in citizen signatures and votes. I believe it completely bypasses the state government politics ( elected legislators ) . Not all states have this process available

I 100% percent hope Floridians legalize recreational marijuana rights.

It's just too bad that the path involves desantis cronies controlling the process.

So yes if the initiative goes through Trulieve as a donor to DeSantis stands to be the state's legal supplier .However at least the initiative that they promoted includes legal home cultivation
(Cultivation of nine live marijuana plants with an 18-plant maximum per household.) Hats off to Trulieve for that ! That's better than my home state New Jersey that does not allow any cultivation even for medical use or CBD hemp. That's because the state can't get their greedy fingers on the revenue lost because of home cultivation.New Jersey has no ballot initiative just greedy politicians. No I have no ties to Trulive just calling it as I see it. Capitalism isn't that bad better than greedy politicians

It is my understanding that the old boy's network has come up an ability of short sheeting the process
in such a way as to be able to keep the public from being able to benefit from Ballot Imitative, as
they use the likes of ALEC to push corporate friendly bills that many would find repulsive.

ALL states should have a citizen backed initiative process available to them. NOT having one lets our elected "representatives" continue to NOT do what we elected them to do. Tennessee, sadly, does not have one. way the hell over 60% of the population has said they want cannabis legalized, (even higher for medical) but our "representatives" think that we (their voters) don't understand the issue. oh, i'm pretty sure that we see what the problem is...
