Police uncover Springs-Chicago marijuana ring

More than 100 acres of land and 140 pounds of marijuana were seized by authorities in Colorado Springs and Elbert County last week in what may be a medical marijuana operation illegally shipping products to Chicago.
On Nov. 2, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, in cooperation with the Illinois State Police and Colorado Springs police, organized a sting against the drug operation, which police allege grew marijuana in Colorado Springs, shipped it to Chicago for sale and then shipped the profits back to Colorado Springs. Officers delivered 50 pounds of marijuana to a location in Chicago, and there found a connection to an address in Elbert County.
Four suspects have been arrested in Chicago in connection with the case. There have been no reports of arrests in Colorado.
Two days after the sting, the three agencies executed search warrants at three addresses in Colorado Springs and Elbert County, and seized 140.5 pounds of marijuana and 26 marijuana plants. The Elbert County warrant was for a 100-acre property that housed grow sites in greenhouses and buildings, as well as outside under rock outcroppings and amongst pine trees.
The three agencies began working together in June after the DEA ran a sting operation between Colorado Springs marijuana growers and Chicago drug dealers. At one Colorado Springs home on Oro Blanco Drive, officers found 42 marijuana plants, 3.5 pounds of marijuana, and a grow operation capable of housing 500 marijuana plants.
According to property records, that home is owned by Judith A. Schnur, who has a mailing address in Chicago Ridge, Ill. State licensing records show that multiple marijuana businesses have been operating out of the house since March 2007. All the businesses, including Pharm-Fed LLC and Hegemony Extraction Sciences were registered to Matthew Christopher Schnur.
A man named Matthew Schnur is an activist in the medical marijuana industry in Colorado Springs. Police did not confirm Monday whether he was the same man.
Schnur the activist is a medical marijuana user and has taught classes to others on growing and cultivating marijuana. In 2007, he was escorted out of an American Cancer Society event for promoting medical marijuana.
Tanya Garduno, president of the Colorado Springs Medical Cannabis Council, had not heard about the bust on Monday afternoon.
She said that she can’t think of any way someone could grow that much marijuana in a residential home, ship it out of state and still be within the law.
“That’s a perfect storm for (4th Judicial District Attorney) Dan May to come visit you,” she said. “Which sounds like is what happened.”
If this is a case of medical marijuana being shipped out of state, it wouldn’t be the first for Colorado Springs police. In June, police said they had evidence that medical marijuana grown under the guise of being supplied to local dispensaries had in fact been shipped out of state. Police have investigated at least six cases of medical marijuana being shipped through FedEx and UPS to Arizona, Florida, Kansas, South Carolina and West Virginia.
