Is anybody using these bulbs or can you tell me anything about them. I see them mentioned around but not much is said.

Made in USA would they work in Oz? And do they require a special kind of MH ballast or will the standard available from the shop do?

No experience with that bulb mate.
It will run of a 1000 hps or mh magnetic ballast at 50/60 hertz, electronic ballast's run at a higher hertz which will destroy the bulb.
Give it a go mate and let everyone here know your results!

I would but I don't know enough to know if there is a matching ballast available in Oz. I asked around and was told, by people selling magnetic ballasts, these bulbs require a special ballast. I don't know if that's BS or they don't know or just want to sell their bulbs as well.

I can only get the bulbs in boxes of 6 from US so it's not pennies lost if they get here and I have no matching ballast for them.

Mate they are meant for space lighting outdoors, quote from Phillips " AllStart Technology are direct retrofits designed to operate on both probe start and pulse start magnetic ballasts" why are you interested in these? a whole lot easier to just buy something here in Aus isn't it?

I wouldn't bother with USA stuff, you might get a surprise when you realise it is a 120V globe and not 240V.

Stick to the Oz stuff. Any of the standard HPS or MH 1000W globes are just fine. Don't overcomplicate it.

There is limited info about this bulb mate, a retro fit that will work on 1000 hps magnetic (pulse) or mh magnetic (probe). On any voltage. Hence the allstart technology.
They mention an ideal style of ballast for the lamp but does not exist beyond that I believe.

Have you had experience with 1k lights?
I don't know how these stack up against a high end 1k lamp and would advise to start with a light that has proven results and then compare from there

I love cmh for micro. 70 w cmh bulbs and ballast are cheap as chips on eBay in international listings.. I put a few over a small lst'd chiesel plant in the poorly lit end of a hps lit room. Fun experiment with great big snowy buds that I never expected from such small lights.

Happy growing :tiphat:

Good advice J, appreciated. Have been a little eager to get some toke in after moving.

Not much experience with lights at all and I think I might just veg 'n lst a few plants inside under 100w T5 6500k with some regular mid day sunshine - wonder how that will go.

Am on Lat 26' so can put out after solstice and trust light hours diff will trigger flower and get something in before the usual season here begins Oct.

I'll keep in mind the low watt stuff, would probably suit me fine.

Personally I wouldn't bother using a CFL except for cloning. They are just about essential for that. They will not maintain a 1/2 decent mother plant either.

Light is needed…HPS or MH or the great outdoors…even better.

Under lights don't try and grow monsters..,doesn't work unless you have a very elaborate set up.

400W to 1000W is fine…just control the temps especially in a hot OZ summer. The big globes put out a lot of heat.

Good luck.

Uhh, not exactly. Input voltage determines ballast selection/ wiring configuration. Properly done, output voltage driving the lamp is the same for any input voltage. Hence multi-tap ballasts that will supply proper output voltage on 120/208/240/277/480v input voltages.

Sticking with what's available in Oz is probably a good idea for Hunter, however.

They can run on either a 1000W M47 type Probe Start or M141 type Pulse Start ballast, both of which will be readily available in Oz. They are designed as a retro-fit as was stated earlier - like most/all Philips CDM lamps including the 315W CDM Elites that are very popular in the CMH thread.

The CDM860 can only be used vertically.

You can buy 1 for $99USD from here: http://advancedtechlighting.com/cdmea860.htm
Or for $134 from here: https://www.platt.com/platt-electri...DM860-V-O-4K-EA-BT56/product.aspx?zpid=919560
Or $127 from here: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-421792-CDM860-AllStart-Halide/dp/B00D448222#productDetails
They are out of stock through Fishpond Australia but you can get them to e-mail when/if they are re-stocked here: http://www.fishpond.com.au/Health/P...60-watt-Metal-Halide-Light-Bulb/9999420097396

Good Luck!

They are also available on ebay from US. Links in this post https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=6353170&postcount=6020 lead to a seller who still has some, boxex of 6 for around $125 last I looked.

If you go that way, be sure to communicate with the seller & stress the need for really good packaging for international shipment.

Lamps I ordered from him were not very well protected & really got hammered by the USPS. He said no worries, said he's reshipping to cover the damage. Seems stand-up so far- we'll see.

Thanks Jhn but I'm going to put them in the ground. Always my preference but investigating lights because it's winter here - it will be again, though we have a El Nino coming and it tells in temps of 29c hi and 14c lo with solstice just over 3wks away - ground looks viable and have a few sprouting with a guerrilla site already prepped.

I think of using the CFL for a couple weeks just to get a few small (EU) seeds started at winters end here. Monsters reserved for a bush grow, if all goes well. I prefer seed to a mother too, though will probably clone a few.

Getting too close to spring and temps already rising with El Nino coming (29c Hi and 14c Lo), don't really want to deal with indoor heat and much on the boil anyway
