The House has voted with a slim bipartisan majority to federally decriminalize marijuana.
The vote was 220 to 204. Republicans Tom McClintock of California, Brian Mast and Matt Gaetz, both of Florida, joined the majority of Democrats in supporting the bill, while Democrats Henry Cuellar of Texas and Chris Pappas of New Hampshire voted against.
The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, will prevent federal agencies from denying federal workers security clearances for cannabis use, and will allow the Veterans’ Administration to recommend medical marijuana to veterans living with posttraumatic stress disorder, plus gains revenue by authorizing a sales tax on marijuana sales.
The bill also expunges the record of people convicted of non-violent cannabis offenses, which House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said, “can haunt people of color and impact the trajectory of their lives and career indefinitely.”
“It can result in difficulty finding employment, difficulty finding housing, denial of access of federal benefits, denial of financial aid at colleges and universities, and denial of the right to vote,” Hoyer said. “That’s why we’re dealing with this.”
Senate Democrats have a similar legalization bill in the upper chamber, but neither that bill nor the House-passed MORE Act is expected to clear the 60-vote threshold for passage in the Senate.

Mississippi becomes 37th state to legalize medical marijuana

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the legislation during her weekly news conference Thursday, telling reporters the legislation is “consistent with what is happening in many states across the country.”
“It also addresses the injustices of it because of what penalties had been before some of these, this decriminalization took place,” she added. “So I’m all for it.”
A similar bill was passed in December 2020, and was championed in the House by the late Rep. Don Young of Alaska, who was a co-founder of the House Cannabis Caucus, but died last month before the bill made it to the floor for another vote.

Voted down and for good reason. 25% Federal tax on top of all other taxes and fees is good enough.

When Will Democrats Get Serious About Repealing Pot Prohibition?

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) thinks Congress never should have banned marijuana because it had no constitutional authority to do so. He nevertheless voted against the MORE Act, objecting to the "new marijuana crimes" its tax and regulatory provisions would create, with each violation punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The 163-page preliminary version of Schumer's bill doubles down on the MORE Act's overly prescriptive and burdensome approach. It would levy a 25% federal excise tax on top of frequently hefty state and local taxes, impose picayune federal regulations and create the sort of "social equity" programs that gave pause even to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida), the MORE Act's lone Republican co-sponsor.

GOP support for marijuana federalism is clear from the fact that 106 Republicans voted last April for the Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act, which would protect financial institutions that serve state-licensed marijuana businesses from federal prosecution, forfeiture and regulatory penalties. The SAFE Banking Act would already be law if it had not been blocked by Schumer, who insisted that his own bill take priority.

More communist fake racism. The same loser party has been running most of the large cities where black folks get hassled. Oh sorry, people of color.. Now they talk inequity and of course no mention of equality because we have equal rights in the US. Another Communist money grab to further enslave the population.

Of all the years since cannabis has been illegal, this is the year they want to 'decriminalize' it? Right after covid when the economy is weak, moving toward a massive recession, gearing up for ww3 against the Ruskies, worst economy in years... Call me paranoid but I think it's only to crash the cannabis industry, most of which is black market. The inequitable will skip there small fines and meanwhile another huge part of US economy would take a dive as dirt cheap imports will flood the market akin to sending jobs and factories overseas. Another build back better gem from the usurpers of peace and freedom. Hard pass..

Illinois is still trying to figure out a way to force more cannabis business to minorities. But all the different minorities are fighting amongst themselves and have tied things up in court for two years now on who can sell. Same with hemp and farmers. Illinois legalized it (again) but can't get the regulations in effect to allow the farmers to grow.

In the usa, people CAN brew their own beer, make wine, and grow tobacco. So, i wonder how a class action suit about growing a personal amount of Cannabis would hold up in courts, if Cannabis is dropped from scheduling.

most folks are not going to grow. many that try will give up. when all said and done, those states that do legalize after the feds surrender control will prob do like Virginia has done. grow an certain number (four in Virginia) of plants with limits on public smoking, possession, transfer etc. if they treat weed like hemp here in TN, i'll go along. gotta have a $250 dollar permit to grow up to an acre.😎 should have a cheaper one for smaller grows though. maybe a greenhouse permit based on square footage?

Big Pharma, Big Tobacco and Big Alcohol do NOT want cannabis legalized.

And the Politicians are having a hard time lining up the bribes. Been legalized for two years along with hemp. No hemp plantings yet though!

With license delays persisting and Illinois legislative session ending, situation called 'dire' for some marijuana entrepreneurs

https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/new...called-dire-for-some-marijuana-entrepreneurs/

The State of Illinois made $131 million last month alone in legal weed sales – but none of that marijuana was grown or produced by new state license winners trying to break into the industry.

As CBS 2's Tara Molina reported Wednesday, there is a deadline this week at the Illinois State Capitol. The legislative session ends Friday - and if nothing happens on some pending bills, it could be another year of waiting. In turn, it could be another year until you see any new products on the shelves of cannabis dispensaries.

Molina is told some entrepreneurs can't afford to hold on any longer.

Illinois has seen more than $2 billion in cannabis sales in the more than two years since legalization for recreational use. And there is not one new company growing it, moving it, or selling it.

10,000 Truck Drivers Taken Off The Road Due To Marijuana Violations

...., the Biden administration vowed in December to get more truck drivers on the road by boosting recruitment efforts and expediting the issuing of commercial licenses. However, that won’t have an effect on another hurdle: disparate marijuana laws across the U.S. that are contributing to an increase in violations. According to KPLC News, in 2022, a growing number of truckers are being taken off the job, which could soon worsen the already suffering supply chain.

As more states legalize recreational marijuana—four of which did so in the past year and three more are expected to by the end of 2022—more truck drivers have tested positive for the substance. As of April 1, 2022, 10,276 commercial vehicle drivers have tested positive for marijuana use. By the same time in 2021, there had been 7,750 violations. That’s a 32.6% increase year over year.

Truck drivers who travel cross-country face inconsistent state regulations as 19 states have legalized recreational marijuana and 37 states permit it for medicinal purposes. But even if a driver used marijuana or hemp-based products like CBD while off duty in a state where those substances are legal, they could still be faced with a violation due to the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) zero-tolerance policy at the federal level.

Bill Clinton endorses marijuana for first time. During his 1992 presidential campaign, Clinton infamously admitted to experimenting with marijuana, but insisted that he “did not inhale”. This week, Clinton celebrated the “very encouraging” evidence that CBD helped to relieve postoperative pain, stress and anxiety. [WFB]

Everyone should have a small 6 plant grow at home. Im not a fan of what states did to make cannabis legal in the USA. IMO it's nothing but a $$ grab by all involved. If the feds ever made it legal here it will be so much worse.

Yeah sure Phillip Morris said years ago theyd never be on board with legalization. Lets see how fast they shoot the moon when its actually legalized. Ofcourse it will be grown under the worst of circumstances like their tobacco
