so everyone that is in my contacts in one of my yahoo e-mail accounts got an e-mail from me today.... that i didn't send them.

it was sent w/ (no subject), and the only thing in the e-mail was a link.

if they klicked the link it took them to a website w/ an encrypted address that advertises a canadian phamacutical company that sells viagra stuff.

...then that persons contacts all get the same e-mail from them.

how common is that crap, and is it damaging my computer or do i just need to cancel that e-mail acct. and forget about it? (aside from all my contacts bitching at me about it)...

...and where would it have come from?

:thank you:

The Canadian Pharmacy email hack has been around for awhile now. In most cases, if you change your password, it should be ok.

how common is that crap
Very common. Can range from simply irritating to having to rebuild your machine to "I gotta call all my financial institutions and a lawyer now".

It's a good idea to change passwords on all email accounts periodically anyways, as well as any other online accounts such as banking, etc. Use a good strong password, and never click the "Remember Me" or "Stay logged in" checkbox on any account you really care about. If remembering strong passwords is difficult, consider using a secure password vault, or something like KeePass.

You probably fell prey to a worm or XSS exploit. You should be running an antivirus program which automatically updates it's virus signatures on a regular basis, as most will catch stuff like this before it has a chance to do anything. If you are on Windows and don't want to spend any money but do want an unobtrusive but fairly good antivirus, consider using Microsoft Security Essentials. If money is not an issue, many commercial internet security packages have nice anonymity features also. You might want to consider installing an antivirus right now. Don't wait until you see something worse happen.

I allways wondered if the people that worked for Apple started the first "worms" viruses for PC's, sure does sound like they go together. Soft'war like software, its silent.

I recently switched from yahoo to gmail for the exact same reason. Sounds like the same email that all my contacts have been getting every couple of weeks. Why would you click on the link? Thats how you get nasty viruses in your computer. Why would your contacts bitch at you, they can't tell thats not from you?

I've been getting emails like this from a girl I used to date. I knew she wouldn't be emailing me a link like that so I never clicked. Glad I didn't. I've gotten them like once a week or so for a month now.:tiphat:

Could just torrent software that normally costs money if you are opposed/skeptical to free anti-virus programs. In regards to the emails, they are very common. My mom's account has done the same thing two times now. Finally had a talk with her about how to use the internet safely and she hasn't had a problem since, thankfully haha.

Check your programs list (control + alt + delete) and see if there any weird .exe files running. You can look up any .exe by just typing it into google and finding out what the program does. Note that sometimes programmers will name their virus something that all machines have like "svchost.exe". There is a way to deal with this issue but it takes too long to explain lol.

This is a very common scam, and it's not malicious in the sense of stealing your info. They do it to spam their internet address to many people, which is where the scam comes in. There is a legitimate Canadian company(ies)that sells real viagra and other drugs, however these sites are spoofing the name of the legit site to sell fake viagra, which is nothing but herbs that can be bought in any drug store for a fraction of the cost. They are offshore, mainly from India and Europe, and beyond the reach of our authorities. As mentioned, just use an email scanner to eliminate it, such as AIG free edition, or Avast. Malawarebytes is good too.Use it in conjunction with the antivirus. If you Google "Canadian online pharmacy scams", you will get the story.

You need a strong anitvirus. Nobody hack your email. This is certain an virus. Existing versions for Yahoo, for Outlook , express or not express, for facebook. Virus spreading necesitate an click on infected mail. Without this, it not work. Attention at mail received by others, and if this is possible in your system, poreview it. Viruses are a common but crapy text, they cannot be personalized. And if you received some like this ( see my pics , Hanny halloween, etc) send by a adress who usually not send this type of mail, not open it. Delete it.
