Talk about an early start. However, when you think about it you have a ways to go to sort out females, make clones and then get them ready to go outside. The time goes fast so this is probably a very smart idea.
But time is already going to fast. LOL!

He might be in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case the grow season is just around the corner.

I find it safer and easier to start plants indoors and transplant after 2 or 3 weeks.
Unless you have a lot of seeds, I find direct seeding is risky.
