I was dreamin' when I wrote this
Forgive me if it goes astray
Welcome to my first grow journal! Hopefully the first of many. I posted some pics on another thread in Breeding and Strains,
https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=285430, but I decided to go ahead and start my own journal because there really isn't much out there about the primary strain I am working with, Rare Dankness Grape Ox, and figured it might be helpful to some others down the line.
I had done a lot of browsing of seeds that were available locally and both the RD Blue Ox and Grape Ox caught my eye. I selected the Grape Ox for a few of reasons. I loved the idea of purple because of a memory of some tasty Jamaican way back in the day. The Grape Ox plants are supposed to be smallish, and the strain is reputed to be super strength. So even with moderate success in my throughly scrubbed and freshly painted spare bathroom, I'm hoping they will produce something nice.
I bought a pack of ten Rare Dankness seeds in April and was pleased to find a dozen magic beans inside. At the same time, I bought a 1g taster of Four Corners Kush and was grinning ear to ear when yet another Rare Dankness seed popped out of one of the little buds in there!
I was planning to use six of the ten seeds in order to have a second chance if I really blew it first time around, but since I had a couple extra I went with seven of the Grape Ox, plus the bonus Four Corners seed. The seeds went into little coco pellet pots late afternoon 27th April, but having never used coco pots before, I tossed and turned all night worrying about screwing them up. The next morning, I ran out to buy peat pellets and swapped them over to the peat pellet pots about 12 hours after they first went into the moist coco. Crazy start, but guessing many of you have been there. If you are going to make a panic move, do it early and get it out of the way!
I have done this before, but not since the last millennium. I shut my old closet grow down when I moved years ago and never restarted it and I have been asking myself why quite frequently over the last couple of weeks. I have grown lots of tomatoes and sunflowers and irises and columbines, and on and on, but the joy of growing your own cannabis is somewhat euphoric. I have missed it and I'm glad to be back.
I started seeds in peat pellet pots inside a humidity box. (I used a pre washed salad box from Costco for the humidity box - works perfect and room for probably two dozen peat pots in there) Seedlings were all above ground within 72 hours. Once either tap root came out the bottom or seedling was out the top they all went into 1.4 pint 4" pots with a bag to bag mixture of FFOF and FFHF supplemented with about 7-10% EWC. I mixed that with about 30 - 40% perlite for starting mix.
Lighting is my old 400w HPS that I bought in the early 90s. Can't believe how prices have come down. Think I paid $250 for the hood, ballast and bulb back then. Bulbs are marked $54.95! Holy crap.
On day 14 I transplanted into 2.75 quart pots.
The soil mix is the same ratio of OF/HF/EWC but also has dolomite lime, and both bone and blood meal added and again is mixed with about 30-40% extra chunky perlite before potting.
Nothing else being added except tap water from from the Rocky Mountains.
the original pots early on day 13
in new pots early on day 15, repotted previous evening
developing nicely day 15
about 5 inch spreads on day 13
…so I whipped out my big 10 inch
Late day 16 about doubled in spread from day 13
Yes on the dechlorinating the water over night. I have a 55 gal fish tank so always have a bunch of jugs airing out anyway.
Colorado is hard to beat. You will love it here. This is a basement bathroom so temp stays right around 70 and humidity is about 25%.
I have never checked ph on the water, but plants have always seemed pretty happy with it so far.
And yeah, the whole door crashing thing is what kept me on the sidelines so long I guess.
Sounds like you have a ton of variety growing. Do you ever do a little pollination for seeds or just clone? How tall do you plan on letting them get?
Here is a pic of the Four Corners plant today (day 18). It has the most advanced development underneath.
Overall they are standing about 4 inches tall
And this is the 15 year old bag seed. Looks like it could be sativa, but too gnarly at the moment to really tell. Hoping it and the Four Corners are both females.
