Hey all
This is my first grow journal. This is also my first coco grow. I'm excited about using this new medium. I have experience with soiless and hempys with pretty good success, but from all the threads I have read about coco, I feel this just might be my new medium of choice.
You are all welcome to join me on my journey to Cocoland. If all goes well, I may not come back.
I just received my beans in the mail. I found a great site that sells single seeds, so I purchased a few to check it out. It only took a week to get them. I was pretty impressed.
I bought;
Og kush- Reserva Privada
Jack flash#5- Sensi seeds
Bubba kush- Green house
Tangerine dream- Barney's farm
This grow I'm trying the Tangerine Dream
I currently have some LA Confidential and Ice Cream at different stages using hempy buckets with perlite/ vermiculite mix. I love the ease and growth rate of the hempy since you hand water like soil but it acts like passive hydro with a mini reservoir.
I think the coco will improve the growth rate as well as the smell and taste. Word is that coco will increase the stickiness of the bud compared to perlite/ vermiculite.
I'm using compressed coco, which I prepare by breaking up into a bucket with holes in the bottom. Then rinse with distilled water to make sure all the salts are washed out. Apparently today's coco coir is much cleaner than it used to be.
Before I use the coco, I "charge" it with a low nute and calmag solution.
The Hempy bucket
Once my seedling is big enough I will transplant her into a 1 gallon hempy bucket. I drill a 1/4" hole 2 inches up from the bottom of bucket and fill it with perlite up to the hole, then straight coco (I'm considering 75/25% coco/perlite mix) for the rest.
I will eventually move up to a 3 gallon hempy bucket about a week before flipping to 12/12 to give the plant some time to recover.
Moving up allows roots to grow during the first couple of weeks of flower before root growth tapers off.
The rez on the bottom allows for less frequent watering.
It's important to water with nutes every feeding, cause even tho it looks like soil grow it really is soiless and should be treated like hydro. When I first transplant, I water every day until the roots hit the rez. You can tell this because growth really takes off.
I then will water every 1-2 days depending on the plants needs. I tell by weight. If the pot feels about half heavy, I'll feed her. Apparently it's hard to overwater coco. I will water until I see it start to runoff.
Coco drains very well so you should see about 10-20% runoff
The great thing about hempys is that once you move up to 3 gallon buckets you can get away with a feeding every couple of days as compared to 1-2 times a day with regular drain to waste.
The scrog
I only have 8 sq ft of area and 5 ft of height to flower so the 400 hps and screen allow for great yields in such a small area. I get 50 watts/ft coverage and my light can get as close as 7-9 inches above the canopy. I found that chicken wire with 2x3" holes work great for this use. I try to keep the screen about 8" above the top of the bucket for easy access for watering. I try to keep the light around 9" above the canopy, raising it as required.
My biggest challenge is the heat. I find that below the canopy the temp stays around 75-78 degrees, but above can get into the mid to high 90's. The rootzone stays fine, but it has to have some effect on the growth.
I either top or lst my plants while in veg and let them bush out as long as I can, then when I put them under the screen, they fill up about 75% of the holes. This allows room for stretch and training so that every 2x3" hole will be filled which a bud.
I have to say that a "carpet" of buds blooming is quite something to see. Not to mention that every bud is getting optimum light exposure.
I remove all little stalks and growth under the canopy, except for the fan leaves. I let them do their job and will fall off when done.
I'm a firm believer in leaving fan leaves alone. You can tuck the big ones under or cut them in half if they're intruding on bud sites.
Removing all the growth below allows for the energy to be utilized in the bud development.
I have a 2'x3'x4' cabinet for vegg.
I use 3- 24" high output t5 23w sunblaster flouros 6500k
And a 150 watt hps as well
For flower I have a 2'x4'x5' homemade grow tent, using an
Emperor 400 watt hps and set up a screen for scrog
My nutes
For veg cycle:
Botanicare ZHO- rhizosphere root inoculant.
B52
Calmag+
Canna coco a + b
Fulvic acid
For flowering I add Gh Koolbloom, Botanicare Sweet raw and finish with Botanicare Ripe
I am trying Millennium coco coir fiber. It looks very clean and low salt content.
I germinate by dropping a seed in distilled water treated with b52 until the seed sinks. I then use the paper towel method just until I see the root tip. I realize I could just leave the seed in the water until it cracks but I don't want to take any chances, since I only bought one seed.
I then plant the seed straight into coco using a hempy cup root tip up.
For those of you who haven't heard of a hempy cup, it's the smaller version of the hempy bucket.
I get a plastic drink cup and poke a small hole about 1 1/2" up from the bottom. I then put perlite up to the hole and fill the rest up with coco treated with b52.I say a few prayers to the cannabis gods and wait.
I'm happy to say that my bean is now a seedling.
I have to admit I was a little nervous planting directly into the coco, having no experience with this stuff.
If anyone has experience with this type of coco grow, feel free to share your knowledge, pics or experiences.
Thanks for stopping by
Like I was saying earlier, I only have one TD seed so I thought it best to do my trial and errors on an established plant.
I decided to use one of my Ice Cream clones
Ice cream is a cross between Ingemars white widow and Bubble gum ( I know eh?Delicious). 60 / 40 sativa / indica
Anyway I used a nice indica leaning clone for my experiment.
I had her in a perlite/vermiculite hempy cup.
I was curious to see how it took to the coco.
It's important to try and keep the coco and nute solution at around pH of 5.8. I rinsed the coco out a few times with distilled water until I reached the proper pH. I let the coco dry out a while, then "charged" it
With 8 ml/gal of calmag+ and a low nute solution. Coco tends to draw in a lot of calcium, but doesn't release it as well and the plants use a lot of magnesium, so it's a good idea to supplement it with calmag+, especially if using ro water.
I use tap water that has been left out for 24 hours or more to release the chlorine and other nasty chemicals.
Once everything is ready for transplant, I sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of ZHO directly onto the roots and set her into the medium.
Botanicare ZHO is a unique and proprietary blend of fungi that builds a natural microbial system in and around plant roots which greatly improves plant and root growth, vigor and production naturally. It improves soil structure and increases nutrient uptake ( it was easier to explain reading it from the package lol ). ZHO contains a number of different Endomychorrizal and Trichoderma species as well as amino acids used as a catalyst.
My nutes at this point consist of :
10 ml each Canna coco a+b
8 ml b52
5 ml calmag+
10 ml Fulvic acid
Per 4 l of tap water Ph to 5.8
Let solution sit for a few hours before using. Apparently coco is pretty forgiving so as long as your ph is close- 5.5-6.2 you should be fine.
I find I do have to water everyday at this point. That really is a good thing because the roots are getting oxygen rich nute solution consistently.
I know there are those of you who are wondering why I'm not talking ppms and ec readings and such. To be honest with you, I rely more on what the plants are saying as well as following the schedules for the specific base nutes and additives. I tend to go easier on the nutes than the suggested doses then increase accordingly, as well as pushing the plants when theyre most productive. I might get a meter someday, idk, but for now pH is what I watch for and not letting the coco get dry, which causes salts to build up.
Peace for now
Cheers!
I lurk around GC quite often myself. In fact, I got a lot of good info about coco growing from AskEd and MrsEd from there.
Have you had much experience with coco hempys?
Thanks for joining me on my journey. Pull up a couch and make yourself comfortable
Bmaster
I have her under a 100w 6500k cfl for 18 hrs/day.
I'm starting her off with a low nute solution consisting of
6 ml each Canna coco a+b
4 ml b52
3 ml calmag+
Per 4 l of tap water
I'll see how she takes to that and adjust accordingly.
I'd be interested in checking out your journal, but apparently I need more posts to pm

I'll keep this nute regiment up for a while till I see her start to take off a bit.
Watering once every two days is keeping the coco at a good moisture level.
I'll be back for an update when she starts vegging. Please check back.

It shows the merits of coco hempys already.
Cheers

I'll keep her in the 1 gallon for about a month before I have to upsize the bucket and lst her to keep her under control.
I'm very excited to see how fast she grows once she starts to veg.
My nutes For early veg consist of
10ml Canna coco a&b each
8ml b52
5ml calmag +
10ml Fulvic acid
6ml sweet
Per 4 ltr tap water PhD to 5.8
I feed her every day with approx 20% runoff
I expect her to really start taking off now
I'm interested in hearing how you like the Tangerine Dream.

Yeah, i'm on a bit of a learning curve myself. Are you using coco-hempys as well? What strain are you growing?
