I started a 5 pack of regular Skunk #1 seeds from Dutch Passion. They were bought from Seed Boutique some time last year and at £12.50 may well have been the least expensive pack of beans I've ever bought. The seeds were soaked overnight in a glass of water and then planted into small pots with soil. Four out of the five seeds germinated within a few days. The plants were vegged for about a month and showed sex about a week after long nights had started. I did some low stress training using plastic covered steel wire and the plants seemed to react to it quite well, I would recommend the technique with this strain. The only problem I encountered was that some of the stems were quite weak and needed support as the buds gained weight.
Two of the plants turned out to be female and two male. The males were moved away from the tent so that some pollen could be harvested. However, the males performed so unimpressively in the other environment (which admittedly didn't have very intense lighting) that I decided not to harvest any pollen from them.
While I was initially disappointed that I wouldn't be getting the lifetime supply of Skunk #1 seeds that I was hoping for later I became convinced I had made the right decision as both of the girls hermied on me quite early during flowering. They made a lot of staminate flowers, some of which appeared directly under large pistillate flowers and were therefore very difficult to spot. Pollen from the flowers was apparently viable as I've found some seeds despite trying to pick all staminate flowers.
The only stress I can honestly think of the girls having to endure at this point of their life was a couple of nights when the temperature fell down to 14C/57F. In my opinion that's something that a good plant should be able to handle (GHS Bubba Kushes in the same tent were fine for what it's worth). The problem did go away with only a few staminate flowers reappearing at the very end of despite making no other changes which would also suggest that the low night temperature may have been the reason.
One of the girls was more stretchy than the other, had fluffier buds, and at least during the latter part of flowering seemed to be more nutrient sensitive (to both over- and underfeeding). Yield, high, and smell are all similar.
I was a bit unimpressed with the yield, all in all from the two plants I got about 75 grams of dry bud from the two plants combined. They took over half of the growing are I have and even if I'd been growing this strain alone I wouldn't have reached the 1 g/W spot. The flowering time of 9 weeks isn't particularly short either, especially as when I harvested them there was only a bit of amber here and there and they could have even gone longer.
The smell was very pleasant and fruity especially during mid-flowering but the fruity smell faded away towards the end leaving only maybe a more generic cannabis smell. The smell can be a bit deceiving as you get accustomed to it quite fast and don't notice it but it is there. I noticed this when I had about one gram of bud in a ziplock in my jacket pocket in a rather small room. I left the room for a while and when I came back I noticed the room totally reeked, to make matters worse mainly of piss. It will be interesting to see how the smell changes during curing.
I really need to smoke much more of it until I can give a proper smoke report but I would say the effects are more on the "stoned" than the "high" end of the spectrum. That said it isn't a couchlock strain and if you want to you can stay active, in fact it even seems to go well with some physical excercise. Potencywise it isn't really a one hit wonder or anything, but if overindulged you will have to lie down for a bit.
All in all I'd say that Dutch Passion's Skunk #1 is ok, especially for the price. Because there are so many other Skunks available, even Dutch Passion themselves offer many, I'd probably get something else isntead though. Something that doesn't hermie so easily and yields a bit more...
