Phoenix canariensis, anyone familiar with ???

Today i received a Phoenix canariensis (palmtree).

It was in a too small container and like you can see it was root-bound.

I trimmed these big (mostely rotten) roots and transplanted it in bigger container, containing a homemade mixture made of soil and sand.
Soil is my bio grow mix, sand is from our beach.

This is how it looks like now, after transplanting it.

Somebody here who have similar plants at home?
Any hints/ tips/comments are welcome.

Grtz

My phoenix palm didn't grow for a long time, till the ferns grew over the top of it and it lived in their shade.

Naturally the young plants are shaded out and they grow in the shelter of the undergrowth till they are of a size to reach for the canopy.

i use thesame ferts on them as for Ensete bananas..NOT MUSA.

a good amount of iron and micro's and basic 10-10-10.

my brothr is on a collecting trip i think in central america this week.

Canary island date palms need a specific diet of slow release Mg and K.
They are not big N hogs and do prefer some sulfur. Too much Ca (in SoCal soil for example or hard water) will antagonise the K and cause K deficiency.

BTW, you do realize these palms are probably the largest palm there is and will grow to 45 feet and have a wingspan of nearly 30 feet.
Sadly, they are most susceptible to fusarium and at least half the specimens in SoCal have succumb to this and perished.

until my brother returns..

I thought I would post this from my own archives until my bro gets back from plant collecting trip..

Common Name: Phoenix Palm/Pigmy Date Palm
Scientific Name: /p.canariensis
Lighting: Moderate
Water: Moderate to Low

The Phoenix Palm is characterized by light arching feather-like fronds in dark green color. The Phoenix Palm looks similar to the Kentia Palm except the Phoenix foliage is smaller in width and daintier in appearance. This palm is usually a very good indoor houseplant which requires little care.

Phoenix Palms grow best in bright, indirect sunlight, so place within 3 to 5 feet of a window, preferably an east window. If plant begins to show yellow or black spot on the foliage, try moving it further away from the window. It may be receiving too much direct sunlight and actually be burning the plant.

The Phoenix Palm prefers to stay moist, however do not let the plant stand in water. Usually a good thorough watering once a week is sufficient. If your plant begins to droop, chances are you are under watering it. If you continue to under water you plant, the plant may never return to its normal shape and appearance. If the tips of the foliage begin to turn black or yellow, you are probably over watering your palm. Reduce how often you water. Usually wait until soil is dry to touch 2 inches deep. Like most palms, this plant prefers higher humidity levels, therefore a misting a couple times a week is good.

If new growth is damaged, sometimes it can be very difficult to get your palm back to its original healthy appearance. You may prune off the tips if they have turned yellow or black to help the plants appearance along.
