Idiot Wind, Heavy Duty Fruity Won't
undefinedOk, gang, and Reeferman, help. I obtained a much lusted after pack of Reeferman's Heavy Duty Fruity about one month ago. Since that time, I have tried twice to get (only one seed each time, I sense they are precious) these beans to pop and get lively. NO, they are not taking off. I am soaking in water for three hours, then placing in a rapid rooter that is kept on a heating pad. Each time, even though the RRooter is on the pad, and kept pretty moist, I get nothing. I am not getting damping off, and the seed just kind of sits there.
This could just be my own idiot wind, noise coming from an unknowing one, so does anyone have some idea of how I am f-up? WH

Hey WH - First of all, three hours is not enough of a pre-soak to soften the shell. Most people will soak the beans overnight until they sink and then they will plant them. However, let's assume for a moment that the shell is unusually hard. I was told by a very reliable source at Advanced Nutrients that he soaks ALL his beans (every strain he grows, regardless of age of seed) in a concentrated mixture of Black Tea (like an English Breakfast Tea) in the refridgerator overnight. Just take two tea bags and let me steep in a large mug of hot water (use distilled water) for about five minutes. Then remove the tea bags and let the mixture cool to room temperature. Then get a small dish/tray and pour a bit of the tea mixture in it. Place the seeds in the mixture and cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge overnight. This, the AN rep says, simulates the colder conditions of late winter/early spring. By the next day, most or all of the seeds should have sunk. The acid in the tea helps to soften the shell to allow it to take on water and start the embryo's life cycle. Once the seeds have sunk, gently rinse them with cool water.
During the night, you should have also soaked the Rapid Rooters. Create a mixture of distilled water, two to three drops of Superthrive (or Vitamin B-1 supplement) and a couple of drops of liquid dishwashing soap (as a wetting agent) in a gallon of the distilled water. This solution should be PH'd to 6.2-6.3. Put your Rapid Rooters in a seedling tray and fill the bottom all the way across with the solution and let them soak. In the morning, gently squeeze out the excess fluid from the RR's and plant the seeds 1/4" (no deeper) in the Rapid Rooter. Mist the inside of the seedling cover and place the tray on your heating pad. ****VERY IMPORTANT**** DO NOT PLACE THE SEEDLING TRAY DIRECTLY ON TOP OF THE HEATING PAD! Use coins or something 1/2" or so thick to raise the seedling tray at least 1/2" above the heating pad. When I put my seedling tray right on top of the heating pad, the temps got up to 90 degrees. This is way too hot! You will cook the seeds and kill them (which I am betting is what happened to you)!! The distance helps keep the temps moderated. I used a thermometer/humidistat with a remote probe on it (20.00 at Loew's or Home Depot) and tried to keep my temps around 78-80 degrees. My first beans popped within 24 hours. Even with the tray raised above the heating pad, I had to monitor it and sometimes turn off the heating pad when things got a bit too warm and then turned it back on later again for a while. Some people will tell you to just put them on top of a hot water heater or a cable box/computer to keep warm. Others will tell you that room temperature is all they need to pop. Truth is, they are all right! I just used this method because it came from someone very much in the know at Advanced Nutrients and I had a very high germination rate because of it. Hope this helps!! BOG's genetics go unquestioned. You just need to get them started!! Good luck, bro!

I've got 5 going from the pack I picked up off Seedbay. They did alright here. I use starter plugs cutting a slit in the side. I germ and clone in a dome with a heating mat with a thermostat. Mine are still unsexed, should get them done here soon. If you continue to have bad luck hit me up, we'll get you on your way to some HDF.

The heat pad has a tendency to cook little sprouts and seedlings.
Toss the seeds in a shot glass of r/o or distilled water with one (1) drop of Superthrive and soak for 24 to 36 hours, popping the top a little every little bit until they all sink.(if they don't sink more than likely it's not a viable seed) After the 24 to 36 hour soak, toss into a paper towel(plain white,no dies) and get it nice and moist (pretty much soaked) I pour the water from the shotglass right into the paper towel with the seeds. They will sprout tails within a day or so at the most and then I go into the rapid rooters. No heat pad needed if your indoors, especially if you have other lights with ballast generating heat as well. They will pop their heads above the surface in a day or two and then your off to the races. I would stay under flouros for a week maybe two then up to the bigger lights. Tex |

I just got a pack of TimeWarp x Headstash for outdoors. The beans looked small but healthy and 11 popped no prob.I just put them in a white paper towel then in a ziplock then on top of the fridge. In less than 36 hrs i had nice tails. Then into the organo starter plugs with a slit in the side like King says. With this method i get great results everytime if the seeds are viable.

scarification is a technique used to get clones to root faster, it's not done with seed, well, I guess it could be but it'd be done after germing. I dunno why folks come with such complicated methods of germing seed, I've always just thrown them in some wet paper towels in a tupperware at room temp. I tried putting them in warmer environments but they'd pop prematurely and be cooked, the cotlydons would pop out and be completely white. So I went back to room temp, and patience and it works fine for me.
