Three arrested over seizure of cannabis plants

Gardai in Dublin arrested and later released three men after cannabis plants worth an estimated €200,000 and growing equipment were seized in the south of the county.

A search at a commercial premises at Greenogue, Newcastle, Co Dublin on Friday also uncovered forged documentation, a Garda spokesman said.

The search by gardai at the Clondalkin drug unit, the Garda national drug unit and other national crime units, was part of the Garda’s Operation Vacuum targeting cannabis growing sites in recent months.

Some 655 cannabis plants were seized and three men, all Irish nationals, were arrested at the scene.

They are aged 24, 26 and 52 and all were detained at Clondalkin Garda station under the provisions of section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act. They were all released without charge this evening. A file will be prepared for the Director of Prosecutions, a Garda spokesman said.

Further searches were carried out in Navan and Clonee, Co Meath, Ballymun in Dublin and Portarlington, Co Laois, as part of the same operation. Forty cannabis plants were seized at the Navan site, along with various drugs paraphernalia, according to the Garda Siochána.

The total value of seizures is estimated at about €250,000.

“Those operating cannabis grow sites apply accelerated growth techniques utilising technology and artificial heat treatment facilities, resulting, in some cases, to cannabis growth at an industrial level,” said the Garda spokesman.

Grow sites have in the past been located in private homes and commercial premises, which in many cases are rented. Gardai warned that the owners of such properties should ensure they are aware of the activities taking place there.

Hundreds of fully grown cannabis plants valued in excess of €100,000 have been recovered from two properties.

The operation is similar to one uncovered in Northern Ireland which has resulted in the arrests of 45 people.

Three Chinese nationals have been charged in connection with the ongoing investigation in County Limerick.

Two rented houses are said to have been physically altered, including the demolition of walls to facilitate the growth of suspected cannabis plants.

Newcastle West Superintendent Jim O`Connor has issued an appeal to landlords to check their properties and contact them on 069 62111 if they notice anything suspicious.

The drugs enterprise appears similar to operations in Northern Ireland.

Cannabis with a street value of 10 and half million euro has been seized there, and 45 people from South East Asia have been charged.

The PSNI says organised gangs from Britain moved into rented flats and houses to grow the plants, before selling the drugs throughout the UK.

Are they as diligent in the UK, like they are in say maybe the USA for arrest concerning grows like this? I almost crapped my pants when I read the part about being released for a later time/date for being charged. WOW!! They'd still be @the Gray bar hotel if they were in the states. Does bail work in the UK like it does in the US? This obviously is a commercial/money making enterprise here, but it seems pretty lax. Unfortunately the war on drugs/citizens continues internationally,SUX!!

it is not unusual in a criminal case for the suspect to be released and a file sent to the director of public prosecutions who decides if the are to be charged and appear in court. Bail only applies after they have appeared in court.

Until the last week there have been very few case involving commercial grow operations in the republic of Ireland.

There were a lot of commercial grow operation found in Northern Ireland last year.

The present crack down is probably as a result of raids in the north and information supplied by the police in Northern Ireland.

Most cannabis in Ireland is cheap imported brick weed or soap/ dirt bar of poor quality.

High quality commercial grow operation are new here.

more Gardaí raids on Cannabis grow houses

Three held after cannabis plants found in houses
JASON MICHAEL

Gardaí are questioning two men and a woman after cannabis worth around €520,000 was found growing in three houses in Roscommon and Longford this morning.

According to gardaí, an intelligence-driven search by officers took place at Lisacul, Castlerea, Co Roscommon; Strokestown, Co Roscommon; and Drumlish, Co Longford.

At Lisacul, cannabis plants and dried cannabis herb with a street value of €84,000 was seized and a man was arrested.

At Strokestown, cannabis plants and dried cannabis herb with a street value of €147,000 was seized, and a man was arrested. In Drumlish, cannabis plants and dried herb with a street value of €287,000 was seized, and a woman was arrested.

All values are subject to an analysis of the substances and plants, gardaí said.

The searches arose out of an investigation following the discovery of a cannabis plant cultivation factory in Castlerea in April 2008.

The three suspects are being held at Roscommon, Boyle and Longford Garda stations under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act. All three are understood to be Vietnamese.

Gardaí at Castlerea were assisted by the Garda National Drugs Unit and the Garda National Immigration Bureau.

Elsewhere, three people were arrested in the North after a cannabis factory was found in Ballycastle, Co Antrim, yesterday.

During the planned search of the house in Marconi Park at 11.30am, the PSNI found a substantial number of cannabis plants and other drugs-related equipment.

Two men, aged 21 and 46, and a woman (44) were arrested.

tens of thousands of grammes (based on a value of €10 a gramme).
These 'factories' must be pretty efficient.
Sounds like a load of rubbish.
