Scoobs' Test Grow Garden

Hey Everybody and Welcome,

The varieties I am testing are:

Grape Krush x Thai
C99 x LUI
Blue Goo F2
Mikado F2
Skunk #1 x Flo
Sour Diesel mystery cross

Some background on the genetics involved:

GrapeKrush x Thai (grape Krush is from DJ short and the Thai came from a friend a while back, supposed to be landrace, I grew out a bunch and picked the best Thai.....It was really good.)

C99xLUI (C99 came from GN, it was a pineapple pheno. The Legends Ultimate Indica came from Legends seeds, I used a grapefruit pheno.)

Blue Goo F2 (originally from Blue Grass seeds, back in the day)

Mikado F2 (federation seeds, this was from the batch released last year)

Skunk #1 x Flo (I got these from a friend of mine, Flo was from DJ short, Skunk #1 was from the Skunkman (I am pretty sure, will check later))

Sour diesel Cross (This is a mystery cross of a sour diesel with either OG kush, Purple Kush, LEmon Kush, Columbian, or Burmese Kush) (got these from a friend)

Now a note on my terminology, I use F2 to represent a cross of a strain with itself that I have done or am certain was done right before I received the seeds. I don't care what the genetics are before that, whether it was a true F1 hybrid, landrace etc... I don't want to hear that My mikado F2s are actually F3 double back cross selfed Grapefruits, because I can't verify anything that others have done.

OK back to the grow, soil used is a simple re-used organic mixture of blood meal, bone meal, kelp meal, perlite, worm castings, dolomite and peat moss. I don't have the exact ratios anymore because I have been re-using the soil. They are under a 400w metal halide, Iwasaki lamp 6500K.

The way I figure it is if the conditions are a little tough for the plants, then the weaker ones will be removed and the hermie tendencies will be seen quicker with a little stress. I don't want to have to baby any plants, and then end up having to do it for any future generations as well. There is also a thrip or two around that I am trying to control early before it gets out of control, so some of the plants are getting neemed and don't like it.

Here is a pic of them, 2.5 weeks.

Things will get more interesting in flower stage.

Do you use that soil mix straight through your grow or do you change it up for flower?

Hey all

I have been busy with summer fun and haven't had the time to do any updates till now.

I topped/fimmed the plants a week ago to increase lower branch growth for cuttings. I want a copy of each plant.

Thrips are starting to get out of control on the lower fan leaves, I will have to try some of that spinosad to get them under control, but at least they aren't as bad as mites.

I am planning on using this soil mix throughout the grow, I can supplement if the plants are showing signs of deficiencies.

I am mostly interested in the terpenes (aroma), bud structure and potency of these plants, which will develop in flower rather than the vegetation stage. I will switch to flower lighting 12/12 after I take a cutting from each plant or at least from most of them. I am planning on using a 1000 watt HPS for flower.

The only point of interest I have found so far in the veg state is the GK X Thai are showing mixed characteristics of Indica and sativa qualities. 2 of them are quite a bit taller than the others with big fat Indica like fan leaves which I initially thought were showing some nice F1 uniformity and vigour, then I spotted a short GK X Thai with Sativa type fan leaves.

Alright, back to the beach I go.

Switched to flower couple weeks ago and weeded out a bunch of males.

But have run into a dilemma.

One of the GK x Thai has a nice chocolate scent to it......I think. It is really early still but I swear there is a nice chocolate or mocha smell to it, which would be really cool cause I haven't had a plant like that before. The bad news it has a couple pollen sacs on her. Not uncommon with Thai genetics but sucks cause I have a bunch of these seeds still.

Here is a pic of the chocolate one:

I usually just cull the hermies but this one might be worth keeping and working with. I think I will remove the pollen sacs by hand if possible.

About 4 weeks into flower now......Half way there!

The Blue Goo is growing nice, similar plant structure to the Columbian x Lemon Kush. It isn't giving off too mush odour yet.

The C99 has taken some damage from the thrip spray I was using, couldn't find spinosad at my local shop, used an isecticide soap, now I will have to do another C99 test grow to find that elusive pineapple/grapefruit pheno I am after. No pics becuase it is just too sad.

Here is a pic of some of the thrip damage.

The GrapeKrush X Thai are doing well. Tallest plants in the room, not the nicest structure but definitely the most stretch. I also mis-counted last week, there are 3 GK X Thai not 2 left, I think I counted it as a columbian x LK. 2 of them had intersex genes and produced manageable pollen sacs on the lower portions of the plants, the third GK x Thai has not produced any pollen sacs. All 3 of them have a chocolate/coffee smell to them, but differ somewhat. Will have to see how this develops later on.

I have also left one pollen sac on one of the plants and am planning on putting a bag over it and the bud that is near it to self pollinate. Hopefully this will give me some selfed seeds to work out the intersex genes. If the plant is worth working on.

PEace
