Let's get rid of our lawns!

I am not a person who loves, or believes in lawns. The price of gas is soaring yet I spend so much money filling up my lawn mower. This time of the year, with the rain and sun, I have to mow it at least once, but usually twice a week. During the dry season I love when my lawn turns dry and brown. I love not having to mow it.
I feel that Lawns are ecologically unsound. I have been pulling it up for months. This time of the year, you can literally watch the grass grow.

here is my question?
What is a vigorous ground cover that will choke out, shade out, and out compete my lawn?
Thanks for all advice.

peace

Checkout www.stepables.com ... they have all sorts of lawn replacement plants. They have a nice search function for plants that will work in your area/traffic etc.

Also check out dichondra. It can be used as a lawn replacement and requires little care.

I was obsessed with the idea of having a moss lawn for a long time. Already had alot of moss in my yard and then i found www.mossacres.com. By getting moss and making a moss slurry (water crystals, moss, buttermilk/beer, water) you can propagate large areas.. but this proved to be impossible in my climate.

i hate lawns as well, so your not alone. i think there a waste of water, an eye sore, and waste of time. spreading native wildflower seeds in the area is much better, cheaper on water and ferts, much better to look at, and brings loads of beneficial insects.

Xeriscaping is what you want.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xeriscaping

Lots of great examples of this in my city (we're eco-psycho here) Takes good planning in my opinion. The people that go at it on a whim end up having yards that simply look like giant weed patches. Look for native plants in your area. My yard is predominantly native plants.

use black sheeting to cover the lawn and the grass will start dieing off.

monsanto and all its execs should be in prison. (yes, the Monsanto sign should be in prison, i know its not a person).

Read up about Posilac. Monsanto and Fox News working together to lie to the public. That was actually the case that was judged 'its not illegal for the news to say untrue things', and thus justified what we now call Mainstream Media.
