My Mongolian Indica grow

Ok so after a 5 year lay off i decided to get into the growing game again. This time instead of old school rockwool slabs i decided to try these new fangel "bubble buckets"

My mate and I placed an order with seeds direct and after a few weeks of waiting for the cops to kick our doors in we received our Bog Bubble, Mongolian Indica, Red Beard and some DPxSkunk and POK KushxMaster Kush freebies. And no cops. Thanks Seeds Direct!

I took 4 Mongo seeds and placed them inside a damp rockwool cube that i had sliced down the middle and put it in a warm place(on top of a battery charger) A day and a half later i had 4 of the biggest and strongest looking sprouts i had ever seen. (Im a bagseed grower from way back!)

I took four little rock wool cubes and soaked them in ph 5.6 and EC 0.8 solution. Sounds a bit strong but tap water here has an EC of 0.6 and a ph of 8. This is a bit high is it not?? Any comments?

I put the little sprouts in and 2 days later had 4 strong little seedlings. I had them in a plastic tub about 4ft away from my 400watt HID. The tub was covered in gladwrap to keep the humidity and temp up, and i think a big droplet of water dropped and hit one of my babys. Well it was snapped anyhow. So i put my last remaining seed in my trusty damp cube, and it sprouted! 100% germination from 5 seeds, gotta be happy with that! So that plant is a little behind the others.

Ok some pics. Being the clown i am i didnt record what date they sprouted, but i did record my first nute mix being the 24th of Jan, and i remember they werent in the buckets then, so they were "born" about 22nd of December.

Here they are Jan 10th.

All four

Mongo 1

Mongo 2

Mongo 3

And Mongo 4 (this ones about a week behind)

Ok a bit about my setup. After spending many hours on this site and others, in paticular agent 86s bubbler diary, well worth a read,( i will try and post a link if i can work out how!) ,plus of course the gang here at IC's words of wisdom in various threads, and this is what i came up with. And yeah im not even halfway through the first grow and i want to change a heap of things.

Light.

1x400watt HPS (with a second one ready to go, maybe once they start to flowers)

Area.

A 1100x1100x2000mm aluminium box i bought from the hydro shop. Not such a good move. The "door" for want of a better word was a sheet of panda film with velcro on it. So of course in about 5 minutes all the velcro was knackered and falling off. I have since put on 2 melonite (is that what its called) doors. Its like chipboard with white coating on it. Much better and more solid, and lightproof.

I also have another box also of the same dimensions but made of pine and some other type of reconstituted wood sheet, masbonite?, lesbonite?, cant remember, its brown anyhow. But i suspect that will be a whole other thread....

Nutes.

Five year old Dutch master, some sort of silica (gotta have that!), nitrozyme, epsom salts and good old superthrive. Oh and oxypluss too. The silica, nitrozyme and superthrive i generally use at about half strength, i just like to have a couple of extra little supplements in there just so i am not relying on the one brand of nute (not that i have anything against Dutch master, just a little thing i like to do)

Bucketys.

Four 25 litres to grow in, plus one 25 litre control bucket. All 4 joined together by 12mm pipe (bad idea!) all then connected to the control by a single 12mm pipe (worse idea!) As you experianced people will know, it takes me about 45mins to drain my nutes for a nute change. But it does the trick. I have also marked inside the control the level of the bottom of the root baskets with a mark about an inch above and below this point. When starting out i ran the nute level an inch into the basket, slowly lowering it to about an inch below, which is where it sits now.

Root Baskets.

Gargantuan monsters which the chick at the hydro shop told me to buy. I was keen on the smaller ones but she said no... the big ones are good, get them. So i did. But the bigger pots actually had smaller holes, so when i got home i ripped into them with scissors and a stanley knife. And i overdid it a bit. So i now have clayballs bobbing around in my buckets. With 12mm pipes joining it all up...... Oh well you live and learn.

Air.

I have a fan sucking in cool air from outside my shed. No idea what size it is, but it does the job. Passive exhaust.

Cooler.

I have an evaporative air conditioner in my room, the idea being to control the temps and keep the humidity up. And it seems to work, temps in the high 20's and humidity between 50 and 75 %. It is also plumbed into the mains water with a float valve that gave me no end of grief. The fittings leak. So now i shut off the main valve feeding it and just open it when i am there to watch. I can just imagine a fitting coming apart while i am not there, spraying water all over the light, flooding the place out!! No good. Oh and this is after i tried about 3 different types of pipe..

Me. Will this pipe handle mains water pressure (holding rubber hydro hose)
Hydro shop chick. Yeah sure.

I then connected it all up, opened the valve and watched the hose swell up like a balloon to about 3 times its normal size. Um, yeah right.

Air pumps.

I have two of them. One big one with four outlets, one smaller with 2 outlets. They both pump into a manifold thingy and from that i run pipes to the four bubblers and one to the control, not much air going to that though.

Meters.

I have a little EC meter. Its yellow and it tells me the EC. And i have a hum dinger ph meter that was gathering dust in a storeroom at a place i worked so i....... what can i say im a bad man.

Ok so by this stage everything is going well, ph keeps coming up but i am onto it, when i decide i need to.... go to Bali.

So after about a week of intense training my flatmate is qualified for the job, she knows about ph, she can open the control bucket and check the nute levels and she can squash grasshoppers.

Ok so i am in Bali for 11 days, i come back and the plants are going off! Well done spunky flatmate!! Here is what they looked like after about 3 hours of tying down.

I reckon i left them too long before going to 12 and 12, its gona be a struggle to keep the buds away from the light, but i beleive i can handle it, and its not such a bad problem to have.

Oh yeah before i went to 12 and 12 i took some clones. I am a bit low on cash atm so i made a home made jobby.

Light

28 watt fluoro. One of thoses ones that fit a normal incandescent type fitting. I made a reflector out of and old workshop light fitting lined with panda film. The mk 1 was not so good. It got very hot, too hot to touch. Then i realised it had no airflow around the bulb at all, so i cut some holes in the panda film just so the hot air can rise (as it does) away from the bulb. Voila, warm to the touch.

Box Thing

A clear plastic kitchen tub thingy that i got from K Mart. I have a plastic mesh base in there sitting on 4 half rockwool cubes (all i could think of) to keep my clone cubes away from the water i put in there (to keep the humidity sky high) The lid has 2 12mm holes drilled in it at opposite ends to allow some airflow.

Heat source

Ok this is a bit sketchy. I am using the power supply for my HPS as a heat source to keep my clones warm. I have 4 plant pots upside down with a couple of pices of melonite? as a frame to hold the box above it. The power supply still has planty of airflow around it, and the temps in the box sit on 24degC.

Ok here they are. Jan 31st day one.

I reckon they look pretty perky myself!

Oh yeah the cubes have been soaked in ph 5.6, EC 0.8 (remember my tap water is EC 0.6) grow nutes. I also put a drop of superthrive, nitrozyme and half a capfull of root hormone in there as well. I mixed up about 4 litres to soak them in. The ph actually went up to 6.8 after a day of soaking, so i took them out, shook out all the solution i could, dropped the ph back to 5.6 and dropped them in again.
