MPP Assists Low-Income Patients

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 18, 2005

Medical Marijuana Financial Assistance Program Begins
MPP Assists Low-Income Patients With Registration Fee
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) today announced a landmark program to assist low-income Montanans who cannot afford to register for a state-issued medical marijuana identification card. The first aid recipient was Missoula resident Robin Prosser, who could not afford the $200 fee for the ID card that would make her a legal participant in the program she campaigned to pass.

The MPP Foundation has donated $2,000 to get the financial assistance fund started, and it hopes to raise enough funds from the public to assure that no patient risks arrest due to inability to pay the registration fee.

"Our goal is to make sure that no Montana patient has to risk arrest and jail because they can't afford to register," said Neal Levine, MPP director of state policies. "Hopefully, Montanans will be as generous with their donations as they were with their votes, keeping the program fully funded."

Patients will be eligible for assistance if they appear to qualify for a medical marijuana ID card and their income is below 150 percent of the federal poverty level. To apply for assistance, patients should send their completed registry application materials, a statement of income, and evidence of their income level (such as a pay stub or tax return) to: MPP, Attn: Karen, P.O. Box 77492, Capitol Hill, Washington, DC 20013. Patients who do not fall within the qualifying income level may submit a statement explaining their financial need.
