Could you ever live on a (sail)boat?

I sure could. We've had the could you live in a van thread and probably many others, but my dream is to one day buy an old oil tanker or cargo ship, cover the deck in dirt, and anchor it somewhere in the tropics off the coast of an island where there's a low risk of storms damaging it. It'd be great... cover the deck in crops and livestock, set up some solar panels to power my computer so I could get online, maybe row a boat to the island every day to pick some fresh coconuts.

I don't think I could do the whole sailboat around the world thing, just doesn't have enough space, which I'm very fond of.

anyone else down for something similar?

I could do either one, on a little boat or on a barge like you said. Your idea is better though.

That would have to be the coolest idea I've heard all day.

Sounds like a lot of work. I'm just hoping to buy some land on a small isolated island off the Tasmanian coast and be self sufficient. Tropics sound nicer but Tasmania is the very edge of civilisation. Equatorial regions are too populated and corrupt.

a little side story on ships that are no longer in use-

most end up in countries like bangladesh with cheap labor, lacking environmental protection laws, and are dismantled. they recycle the metal and just let the nice chemicals flow into the ocean. here are some pics...

i'd do just about anything to get a hold of one of them... wonder how much maintenance they require to keep from rusting.

Yeah I could live on a boat,
Down on the river....... j/k

It'd have to be a boat like this though as I like a bit of room.

Catamarans, can't beat them. Like two sailboats connected
by a huge spacious salon with many homelike amenities.......

I could live on a 40foot yacht cruising around the med and docking at various greek islands. I'd never get bored of that.

I wonder if you could grow on the deck of a boat...

ive lived on boats when i commercial fished, but thats a bit different.

i'd def want an engine on the boat tho so i dont have to just rely on the wind.

if u find an abandoned oil rig in international waters you can claim it and live there too.

also dont know how many of you have seen "float houses" ...houses built on oil drums that they live on in S/E Alaska (alaska charges $100 per year to moor your floathouse in the tongass national forest)

when u wanna move u call the local tugboat captain.

Yeah float houses are popular here too, where a lot of the land is mostly swamp anyway =P
