Interactive Retro Grow

I have been feeling nostalgic. What better way to explore these feelings than a retro grow with some of my favorite ladies? And what better place than ICMag? I am hoping to get comments, criticisms, suggestions, and camaraderie. As the title suggests, this is a retro grow. Everything about it is retro: the equipment, the techniques, the herb, and the grower.
I decided to grow three strains, one from the 80s (White Widow), one from the 90s (Warlock), and one from the 2000s, (Cheese). All 3 are cup winners, and 3 of my favorite strains. The White Widow comes from The Greenhouse, and they are from feminized seeds. Warlock is from Magus genetics, and Cheese is from Homegrown Fantaseeds, and these are from regular seeds, not fems. The room is 67 inches by 65 inches. The medium is soil. Kind of an old fashioned grow, as I like to keep things simple. Also, not a lot of expensive stuff. 10 year old buckets from Home Depot. My light is from 1994- still works, so why buy a new, fancy one? I did a little DIY on the light. Cut some holes in it, attached some dryer ducts, and that's my cooling. The lamp has two fans exhausting heat from the hood-one is a regular $12 bathroom fan from HD, and one is a Panasonic Whisper Quiet in line fan, which is the only new thing purchased for this grow, replacing my other bathroom fan which finally gave out after 10 years. Obviously, the babies are vegging under 1000 watts of metal halide. There are actually two groups here: group 2 were started 16 days after the first, as I didn't like the looks of the original sprouts, although things have changed. All of the White Widows girls were in the first group. There are 7 White Widows out of 10 seeds, and there are 10 each of Warlock & Cheese in the first group, and 10 each in the second group. I am hoping to take some clones to help find some excellent mothers, and am also thinking of making some beans, and would like to have suggestions in that area. Group one is 38 days in this photo, and group 2 is 22 days. I'll explain more on that later. Here are some shots:

Getting ready to start flowering, as the White widows are now about 14 inches, while the Warlocks and Cheeses are only about 6-7 inches. Would like to get the Warlocks to about 12 inches before flowering, but that may change.

O.K. It's 10 days later, and the family has grown:




They have filled out quite a bit, and are almost ready to flower. The White Widows are 16 inches, and have very big leaves. They were transplanted first because they are girls for sure. My first experience with feminized seeds. The Cheese and Warlocks are between 6-9 inches, with the Cheese being the least vigorous, although I don't know why. Same conditions. I would like to see the Warlocks at 12 inches before flowering, but I might be pushing it, as the White Widows are much bigger and are ready to go. White Widow is known as a small plant, but Warlock I believe, is smaller. I grew Warlock before, 10 years ago, and loved the mild smoke and spicy smell/taste. White Widow and Cheese are new to me.

Warlock is a beautiful plant, short and bushy, with tight internodes. Here is a photo of two Warlocks-one, a classic Warlock, and the other, a different pheno, and sickly.




Here is the sickly Warlock. Don't know what the problem is, but it has never been right, although it is the tallest Warlock. I had flushed it in an attempt to remedy the situation, but this seemed to make it worse. I hope it's a male
Any ideas on this one?

The other Warlock, in contrast, has a stem as thick as a #2 pencil, although it is only 6 inches tall. Very bushy, and I will probably clone this one before flowering, in hopes that is female. I am also looking for a few good men to make some beans-perhaps a Warlock/White Widow cross. Warwidow? Or maybe Cheeselock? Or maybe White Cheese?




That's it for now. Would like suggestions on when to flower. Now, or wait for Warlock and Cheese to get bigger? There are 26 plants in the room, and it will get crowded until the males show their colors. There are 7 White Widow fems, and 20 Warlocks/Cheese, but one Cheese is stunted, so I don't count that. If half of the 20 are fems, that will leave 17 females, and I will probably carry 2 males.

O.K. -Time for an update, even though no one is looking.
Near disaster struck when I accidentally overfertilized the younger ones in the group. They got the ferts intended for the bigger plants after they had already been fertilized. So, they were in bad shape. A couple nearly died, and a couple are stunted. I had to do an emergency flushing/transplanting which went all night long. Most of the plants have recovered, but it definitely set them back a week or two. One lost 90% of it's leaves, but is now making a comeback.



I didn't think that one would survive, but it shows the tenacity of the species. I let it hang around just to see how much it will recover.
The rest of the garden's looking good.





















White widow is supposed to be a small plant, but the leaves on these are huge! They are over 2 Ft. tall overdue to flower.









Warlock is a beautiful plant. I have one that is outstanding, in that it is extremely bushy with super tight internodes. Hoping that one is famale, but I don't think so. If it's male, I may let it live and serve as father to some crosses and/or to another Warlock.















Flowering had just begun when these photos were shot, so hopefully things will get more exciting.

I had to bin some warlock a month ago, they all went hermi, but i did have the beans for years, they looked just like yours, really thick trunk and super tight internodes

Yes, White Widow a powerful smoke. First time growing it, and the plants so far are impressive.
About Warlock-I have only one that is totally bushed out (out of ten), with the short, thick stem, and lots of foliage. This one turned out to be male, so I will save it and make some seeds. I have grown Warlock before-very nice smoke-smooth, tasty, and easy on the lungs. Will probably cross some with White Widow, just for laughs.

Damn RG, that's quite a batch of kids you got going there. You ought to pull quite a harvest out of there provided the best case scenario.

Sorry about the lack of updates, but veggin' gets kind of boring, and I thought I'd wait for flowers.
Well, we are there now, 4 weeks in. Took some shots of the whole garden, but the pictures under the HPs just don't look good, so I dragged a couple of White Widows out and they did a strip show! Gettin' kind of frosty, even the fan leaves!




This was a few days ago, and they are a bit frostier now!













Anyway, what a difference 2 months makes. These have another 4-6 weeks to go, and are considerably frostier than the other 2 strains.

Well, it's the 5th. week of flowering, and things are getting interesting. All 7 Widows are looking decent, but I think I have found 2 mothers.
White Widow #1, which was photographed last week, is back for an encore, frostier and with considerable red hairs. It seems to be 2 weeks ahead of the others, which have little or no red hairs. Fan leaves starting to yellow.




A probable keeper, as it's the fastest of the bunch-but time will tell.

Now, Widow #4, a definite keeper. First time I pulled this one out for a closer look. Very nice, heavy cola and buds. Nice & frosty. Not many red hairs yet. Behind #1, but much denser. I will be cloning this one. Very impressive.
