any tips

im about 3 days away from a total switch from soil to hydro just something simple. Im going with a wicking system easiest and cheapest anybody got this goin already and have any advice or just happen to know alot about what i should do to make everything run smooth and solve the problems before they start. thank you in advance for any input and take into account i learned from old heds who only grow the old fashioned way most dont even grow indoor they grow a years stash in a single summer and still manage to have some left when the shits done next year so there was never a need to learn indoor and hydro i like to be able to watch and maintain growth and test (lst, scrog, and some of my bonsai techniques) so i dont know much hydro info.

The wick system is the simplest form of hydro, next I would say flood and drain style table's are next, then ebb/flow and drip system's. The harder one's to me are DWC and Bio bucket's.

I never did it simle, so I am not much help there, but the medium you choose to use will help dictate how often they need to be cared for. I always seem to make the same mistake and over water, it is only a problem depending on the medium used.

Hey fetany,

Here's the simplest and cheapest wick system I know. (I'm currently using a wick sys for my seedlings before I transplant into auto pots.)

Materials needed:

A couple of kitty litter plastic trays, or any square plastic container where the sides are about 3-4" tall.

package of 16 oz plastic cups

1 liter soda bottles, (qty should equal the number of plants you wish to flower)

coco coir

perlite

nutes

Basic Directions:

Germ your seeds using plain water

Poke holes in the bottom of your 16 oz cups, I've found 4-5 nail holes suffice.

Create a mix of coco coir and perlite, about 40% perlite. Load into the cups.

Transplant your seedlings into the cups.

Put the cups into the kitty litter tray.

Add a weak nutrient solution to the tray, about a 1/2" depth. In the first couple of weeks don't use much else other than superthrive for the nute solution. Your seedlings won't need more till they're about 2 weeks old.

Take your 1 liter soda bottles, cut the top few inches off each one. The cut should happen just below the "shoulder" of the bottle.

Punch holes in the bottom of each as you did the plastic cups. Fill with the same coco coir / perlite mix. Maybe a lil extra perlite on the bottom of the bottle.

Transplant young plants into the soda bottles, when they're about 6-8" high.

Place bottles back in kitty litter trays and add the appropriate strength of nutes to the trays to about 1/2-1" depth.

Watch em grow and flower!

Other basic tools needed:

ph up / down
ph test kit
tds meter

That should get ya started with the wick method.

Good luck!

They got a small hydro book sold at Barnes and Noble for hydro growing. Otherwise there are some basics in grow mags. I hate OG but im sure there is a good guide there. Good Luck Jubei

Hey fk, I've used wick systems before. They're cheap and easy to maintain. Mine consisted of just big styrofoam cups filled with perlite for medium and a nylon rope haning into the rez. Tie a knot in the rope so that it stays in the cup and slip it through to the rez. I also added an airstone to the rez so that the solution wouldn't stagnate. The only drawback I saw in this system is that overtime the roots literally tie themselves to the rope and if you ever needed to transplant, well, its kinda tricky.

Oh, and make sure after you set up your system that you let it soak water at least overnight. That way the wick will continue to supply your plants with solution, instead of carrying water out of the plant.

Hope this helps.
