I was just thinking that I would be really interested to start breeding once i get the seeds i ordered and start to grow them. Either that or do a few test grows on some newly breeded seeds! I was just wondering if there is anything i should know or get to do this? And what are the steps of breeding for a begginer?
thanks DAve |

Before learning how to breed you must learn how to grow...well...very well...more than well...and you must study, lots, more than lots...you have to understand notions of botanics, genetics, and genetics specific to cannabis. You have to learn terms such as in-breeding, out-breeding, backcrossing, landrace, truebreeding, phenotypes, genotypes, traits, etc. You must dedicate years of time, study and neverending passion to your plants. You must have the capacity to recognize a plant as being that "special" plant out of all the others, worthy of becoming parent to your new strain. You must be creative, intelligent, diligent and imaginative. You must have an indepth knowledge of the many strains available on the market and thier heritage. You must have balls the size of a Mac truck and a wealth of patience, humility, and respect for the work of others.
If that sounds like a bit much....it is.... In alternative you can take a couple of strains, slap 'em together, and make seeds, possibly find something fun and nice, and then do it all over again with whatever tickles your fancy, but if that's what you choose to do, don't call yourself a breeder. You'll be the one who came up with the killer cross...but breeding is something a bit different (very different). Please don't take my reply badly, I don't want to put you down in any way, and almost all growers dabble with mixing strains to see what they come up with. I just wanted to make clear that breeding is not the same thing as taking two strains or hybrids and crossing them....it just ain't that simple  I apologize to the breeders here for having taken the initiative to answer for you, but my respect for what you guys do and what is behind it all leads me to nitpick on the word "breeder", which seems to be bandied about a bit too easily of late. Dave, a warm welcome to ICMag from myself and all of the other fine people here. If you're really interested in the subject do some reading in the breeders' forum, there's a wealth of information to be found and its a great place to start learning!

thank you, and no i did not take that harshly. I found what you said very helpful actually, and yes what i was talking about was combining two strains and that is what i was hoping to find out how to do. I also do have a huge imagination and loads of creativity, i even used to paint alot. I dont think that I have the patience to become a breeder, but it was the strain crossing that i was interested in.
Thanks DAve |

high clubber89. A good read on crossing and breeding strains is DJ shorts book. It explains the process very well. The book is also really easy to understand and full of good info. Goodluck in what you decide to do. peace

...yeah balls the size of a VW qualify, but I wouldn't go smaller than that  clubber, for what you have in mind its really very simple, all you need to do is learn how to pollinate your plants without seeding all of the females in the grow. |
