Question about Topping a Plant

Hello to all of you out there.......I have a quick question for you all.....

This is my first grow and I am currently growing out 2 Strawberry Cough plants.

I am doing a Ebb and Flow system I have two rooms...one of vegetation and one for flowering..Each room is 5' wide x 3' deep x 8' high.

This Strawberry Cough was a seed on Oct 27th 2004.

10/30/04 Seeds cracked / popped

10/31/04 Seeds sprouted

10/31/04 Put 6 - 4' Verilux fluorescent lamps on the two plants:

My Question to all of you wise folks out there....is Should I top this plant or not...and If I am suppose to top it...can you please show me on this photograph where to top it.

Or if anyone here can direct me to a great place on the net with directions and or photographs on how to top a plant that would be great also.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Heres a couple links that talk about topping.

I like to top my plants, unless i have a bunch going at once, and i don't have the room for real bushy plants.

My advice would be, since you only have two plants going, top one of them, and see which you like better. And if that plant in your pic was mine, in my grow room, i would cut it around the 10" mark on that ruler.

But remember, every one does it a little differently depending on the strain, the size of the grow room, and their style of growing. And after a few grows you will have an idea what works best for you.

if your looking for maximum output from your plant use advanced nutrients VHO products. This basically makes your plant produce multiple shoots I used it for only 1 week and now 2 weeks later i have over 10+ main growth shoots starting to move up torwards the lamp. I did this in addition to topping my plants once also. The results are amazing.....I'll post photos If I can limp down to my garden today

Harry Gypsna: Thank you for your help I will check that out later when I feel like going to the zoo.

ClearCutter: Thank you so much for finding those links for me...I read them and I followed your advice and I topped one of the Strawberry Cough Plants at about the 10" mark which was also approximately the 5 node.

This is how it looks now....Did I do it correctly?

Sharp Pain: Thank you also for the advise for the advanced nutrients VHO products....I will also look into them and I will let you know how it all goes.

Once again thank you all for your help.

you got it traysure! Pinch off one.....two grow back. It does not have to be just from the top of the plant. Pinch a couple of longer side branches also. You will be create more bud sites. Also....if you are looking to clone or even looking to clone for the first time.....this is a good time to practice. Try and take a couple of clones from the lower branches.......even if you just put the cut in a glass of water to get roots. You will be creating a few more bud sites at the same time.

I topped this one late into veg for the second time...you can see the four top shoots now. I also took 7 clones from her and she is really starting to branch out and fill up.

Mind if I jump in here with an "On Topic" {more or less} question?

So... You combine the effort of topping with taking clones? i.e., The growth tip you remove for topping becomes your clones?

Thanx!

Looks like the "Big Guns" as decided to pop in with some great advice:

Hooked-On-Grown: Thanks a lot for your help and for your photo...that Strawberry Cough looks wonderful.

I did take some clones off of my plant and dipped them in some Vita Grow Rooting Compound and then I put them in their own Rapid Rooter Starter Plugs and now they are sitting quitely in their tray under a Dome under the Verilux fluorescent lamps. I will spray them a couple of times a day with distilled water and see what happens.

I wonder if the first time will be a charm or not....we can only wait and see.

BuzzBob: I took the top of the Strawberry Cough and trimmed it up a tad and I will give it a shot at being a clone. We will see if it works for me or not. I believe that it can take a couple of weeks for it to prove that it will survive, but I will keep you posted.

Every Day is a Learning Day for me. Thanks for all of your help.

Take care

I top once or twice depending on the effect I am looking for. If you top to create more of a shrub type plant before flower it works best.

With that being said, there are some strains that don't respond well to topping and they do better with a single dominant cola type grow.

Supercropping is king after topping, I get more output from that process than any.
