City public works sorting through trash for recycling violations

City Workers To Randomly Sift Trash
Trash Cans Subject To Random Inspections

Bristol officials said the city is getting serious about recycling and that it plans to check what residents are putting in trash cans before dumping it into the truck.

Video: Trash Cans Subject To Random Inspections

Workers from the city's Department of Public Works will soon begin randomly sifting through residents' garbage and writing citations to those who put recyclables in the trash.

"I'm not here to be anybody's pain," said David Oakes, the DPW's solid waste and recycling operations analyst. "I'm here to help, and my ultimate goal is to save taxpayers money, not to give them grief."

The city has reported a recent decrease in recyclables. It costs the city about half as much to dispose of recyclables than it does garbage, the DPW said.

If a resident continues to put recyclable items in the trash can and not the recycling bin, city officials said they will be issued fines.

"I'll go out there (and) if there's a notice of non-recycling, I'll go out there and look in the barrel," Oakes said. "It's not a glamorous job but somebody's got to do it, and I don't mind."

City officials said recyclable items should go into recycling bins, including:

* Cardboard
* Office paper
* Newspaper and magazines
* Catalogs
* Plastic No. 1 or No. 2 food and beverage containers
* Paper milk/juice cartons

"As of today, it's a $92 fine per occurrence," Oakes said. "So, if you have a deep pocket, I can keep coming every other week, but I'd much rather come out and educate and get that person on board. It's much easier to get what you want with honey than with vinegar."
just a heads up incase some still throw out their waste in the trash, they might find more than a recycling violation.

A fine for putting garbage in your recyling: understandable. A fine for putting recycleables in your garbage: rediculous. It's the right thing to do, but bullying people into doigng it by making it the law and fining them if they dont?

But of course thats not the reason this was posted here. Be careful what you throw away curbside! I think that's a rediculous violation of privacy to ANYONE anyway. Maybe they'll change thier minds after getting stuck by a syringe or two.

Put the leafy matter in a 5 gallon bucket, add a couple quarts of bleach, and water to the full mark. Shortly it will be "MUSH that you can FLUSH". Make sure you put the lid on, but not airtight. I burn the thicker (dry) main stalks in the wood stove with no noticeable odor , and use the bucket system as noted, most of the time. Stir it periodically, it will speed up the breakdown of the plant material.

PS: The bleach prevents fermentation and controls odor.

haha how ridiculous is that... they did a study here not long ago in the newspaper and most of the things that get recycled end up getting thrown away further down the line anyway

i get fines all the time for putting noin recylables in recylables bags, it is common practice in the big rotten apple. Then again all the garbage goes into compactors so they could never pin one item to anyone only a building of 500+.

Recycling is for the most part doing more harm to the environment than not. Only aluminum is worth recycling. Everything else is better off in a land fill.

More resources are wasted shipping, sorting, bureaucracy regarding legislation, etc than will ever be recovered recycling.

The reason in the beginning for recycling was because of a fear that America was running out of landfill space. This was proven to be an obvious lie, and yet everyone is still recycling thinking that its doing good, when its actually causing more resources to be wasted than ever before.

I can go to several places in my town with a truckload of cardboard and get cash money. Not going to get rich that way, but it WAY more than pays for the time and the gas. And scrap metal? That shit is heavy-you can actually make decent coin on that.
Do you think all those businesses would be paying out money, and staying in business for years, if there were no market for recycled materials? Do you think you could get paid for cardboard if it were cheaper to just trash it?
Someday all that plastci is going to be worth something too.
The main exception is glass-most places it isn't worth much (unless there is a bottle bill).
