GREENSBORO, N.C. - A 71-year-old woman was arrested on drug charges after a chest-high marijuana plant was found in her yard, a plant she said was meant to keep animals away from her garden.

A sheriff's deputy saw the plant as he drove past Betty Holt Walker's home earlier this month, according to Capt. Tony Caliendo of the Guilford County Sheriff's Department.

The deputy stopped to investigate and found five smaller plants behind a shed, as well as marijuana stems and seeds, and a water bong made from a soda bottle inside the house, Caliendo said.

Walker told the deputy she found the first plant — which had grown to more than 4 feet tall when he saw it — in her garden and repotted it. She said it was a special plant used to keep animals out of her front yard.

"This wasn't something that was meant to keep animals away," Caliendo said.

Walker is due in court Sept. 12 to face charges of manufacturing marijuana and felony possession of marijuana. A daughter who lives in the home was unaware the plants were in the yard and was not charged, Caliendo said.

I love my state.

The other day a 93 year old in Durham, NC (just about an hour from greensboro) was caught selling crack!

Also I am not surprised. Guilford county has some good weed.

I dont know, with five plants, she may be a major supplier of a gateway drug. Oh wait she is the "manufacturer". Got to watch those 72 year olds, could throw a walker at you and make a hasty escape. Hope that cop wasnt injured hauling in that criminal. Probably had to call for back-up. THis is the big one. Sheriff Andy almost had to give him a bullet for his gun. Oh,thank God!!!!Another evil drug supplier with possible terrorists ties taken off the streets.I'll sleep better tonight.....
Maybe the daughter should be sent to guantonimo for furthur questioning.

A one plant grow operation...not even an operation, more like a feral hemp plant.
I can not believe they will try to prosecute her.

that poor woman. being hasseled for minding her own business. hopefully the courts will lightly wack her on the hand and send her home.

i keep hoping that if the worst happens and i get busted that my age and clean record will make things easier on me. then again. i'm in phoenix. sheriff joe is on the job and he don't like potheads, hippies, messicans, rules, laws. he'll probably try to have me hung!
