Netherlands - Room & board for a year or more...
Anyone have any tips as to where I can look to find local classifieds for the Netherlands in ENGLISH??
I was browsing around on marktplaats.nl, and that is kind of what I'm looking for, except, even with a translator, I can't make out much of the Dutch...but the prices are more reasonable than listings you would see on craigslist... I'm planning to stay there for atleast a year if things work out. Can someone give me some direction as to where I should be looking for reasonable pricing? I'm looking for a place that would cost me, give or take, $500 / month (US dollars).. A small house? farm house? apartment with atleast 2 bedrooms? Is that realistic?? |

I don't know any websites, but room and board in general are not too expensive there. Though room is somewhat costly, basic food supplies and such are much less expensive then in the US. I lived there for ten months until recently, and it seems that 500 dollars a month will at least get you a 1 bed apt, but i'm sure you can do better if you look around.
Is there any particular city that you are interested in moving to? |

LOL...yeah, I'm working on it.. Sorry G.A.! I'll get there.......
Dr. Bloom - I really have no idea where I would want to get a place, just as long as it is affordable, and it would be nice to be within a half-hour's drive to Amsterdam. If I could find something reasonable right in town, that would be great...Want to get the whole Amsterdam experience in there somewhere, you know? Some place that has nice surroundings, but not too much activity...Relaxing.. |

Half an hour from A'dam? You have to learn to think Einstein here. Half an hour could be the same as the distance from here to Alpha Centauri. We have the most densely country in the world and the most traffic digested. Going to work in the morning my car to A'dam... You'd be better off in A'dam. however, rooms are hard to find and more and more too expensive.
What I would do is see if there is some website that facilitates people connecting to find a place to live for a while. Some exchange thing. A friend of mine has someone living in his house from India, she works as an IT'er for a big company. |

If you use an agency to help you locate a place to live, DO NOT use Direct Wonen on the Overtoom. They are a rip off company and do nothing to help you find a place except allow you to view listings (on paper) that they have at the moment. They claim they will search for the right place for you but they DO NOT. It's a big waste of your time and money. Use any other agency but NOT Direct Wonen. Peace.

Verger OG - I meant half an hour, as in the length of time it takes your mom to get to my house from the city on a Friday night...Usually at about 90 mph. Multiply it by 10 for an estimate with bad traffic conditions. What about horseback?
Thanks for the info guys... Think there is anyone in Amsterdam looking to take advantage of a dumb American? |
