Taking the Coco plunge!
So I decided to start a thread to document my coco adventures, inspired by the many wonderful grows here in the coco forum. Up until now I have been growing in soil, hand-watering. After getting tired of hand-watering for so long, I decided to setup a drip system. Actually what really got me wanting to build this system was the hassle of flushing 25+ plants. I have them all sitting on the floor, which is lined with plastic. Now this last run I tried to have minimal runoff, but alas build-up occured and my plants were burned / locked-out. So I've been pulling the plants out of the closet 1 by 1 and flushing, flushing, flushing, and I'm tired of it. I was gonna build a custom sandbox type deal lined with pond-liner, drill a hole in the corner and drain it through there, into a rubbermaid sort of thing, and just drain that to waste by pump. But now I have decided that I will re-config my closet a bit, and just fit a 4x4 tray. I'm gonna sorta over-haul the closet setup for this run. So same idea, will drain the 4x4 tray into a rubbermaid tub and have that drained to waste (maybe re-use it for that day, if I'm watering multiple times a day).
After buying most of the irrigation supplies, I began to think, well gee, I already have a drip system going on the next run, why run soil again? Coco seems to me like the best transition from "soil" to "hydro". That is to water with much more frequency. I desire the control of what goes into the plant, and with coco I'm hoping to acheive a higher yield. Here are the details of the next grow. Medium: Canna Coco 100% Setup: 4x4 tray, containing 36 (6x6) edit* went with 25, 5x5 1 gallon bags, drip system, no emmiters, just strait open-ended 1/4" 1kw HPS hanging overhead, air-cooled. ~78-82F ~40-50% RH Nutrients: Advanced Nutrients... RO water source Monkey Juice Grow A/B & Bloom A/B Big Bud Overdrive Carboload Sensizym Fulvic Acid Humic Acid B-52 Scorpion Juice Voodoo Juice SensiCal Final Flush Now, I dont think I'm going to run all these products, I'm thinking less is more, since this is my first attempt at anything like this. Any advice on wether or not to use a certain product on the above list is welcomed! If I'm correct, Monkey Juice already has Cal-Mag, as it is designed for Coco? So I'll probably leave the SensiCal out. The strain I will run in this system is a White Widow pheno, given to me by clone from a friend. It has a really awesome buzz, and yields well, and doesnt stink too bad, plus she grows VERY FAST. In my previous run with her, I yielded 18 grams on avg per 1 gallon soil container under 1kw. I thought it was a pretty good yield considering I had those on the outskirts of the light. So the plan for this run was to squeeze as many 1gal's in the closet as I could, I had planned on 56 (no space between bags, heavy pruning for single-cola). That was soil! Obviously plans are changing now that I've decided on coco! I dont want to do that many #'s with coco. Since from I've seen, plants grow faster & bigger. I guess what I have planned is still to be considered a sog, so I will still prune them for single cola, and pray they dont outgrow my space! This particular strain was pretty stretchy in soil, so I imagine that will be amplified? Once rooted in rapid rooters, I will transplant the clones into small 12oz dixie cups of 100% coco. They will start out around .7-.8EC of Monkey Juice. After about 5-7 days of veg in the cups, they will be transplanted to the 1gallon bags, and vegged again for about 3 days before flipped. So a total of about 8-10 days of veg, does that sound too long? In soil, I have this strain down to a 7 day root, 7 day veg in cup, 7 day veg in 1g, and then flipped. That ended up at about 3' tall & 18grams. At this point tho, I'm wondering if starting them in the 1gal's that I plan on finishing them in would be better. So this is it guys, I'm still in the gathering parts process. I have to get the 4x4 tray, and it's barely gonna fit in the closet! I will start posting the construction process soon, with pics. Any advice or criticism before I get started in the next week is welcomed! Thanks in advance to all the Coco forum members, without this great forum I would be lost! Sounds good.
I would make sure to see a decent amount of roots before 12/12, though they will continue to build roots well into flowering, the more the better. A fast/tall strain with a shallow root system will generally stretch close to the same amount as with a well rooted one but the rooted one will yield more IME of course i haven't run your exact clone though, so insert salt here. Potting up is a good idea (rather than 1 gal right away) because they can get a little water logged and be slow in the beginning, once they have a decent root system it's party time with the frequent waterings. 7-10 days cup, 7-10 days 1gal maybe? With the help of voodoo/carboload. You might end up using the sensical in early flo. With temp/environment perfect the monkey juice does extremely well on its' own and no extra stuff till peak flo is needed. 1 per foot sounds good =16? Take all with grain of salt just ideas i'm not a licensed professional lol. Have fun.

cool CQ-personally as recent convert to coco (from nft) i still can't get over how easy it is. If you are a reasonably experienced grower i'm sure that you'll find it a strole in the park. I think that you are right about the less is more thing having seen one or two growers get into trouble adding too much Ca and Mg on top of their coco specific nutes etc-
good points above^^ about potting up and over watering when small cheers eddie

Thanks guys!
Well for better or worse, the plunge has been taken! We're going full on coco this run. Got 45 White Widow cuts rooted and vegging in cups, will take the best 36 and put them in 1 gals, and setup the drippers on em. Started out at .7 EC monkey juice, most responded well, some thought it was too much, so we're flushing and then steadying out the dose. Also been foliaring daily with AN Jumpstart while they were rooting, will continue that for a few more days, then start foliars of B-52, VHO, Fulvic, Scorpion. Dont think I'll be vegging this run that long, so far the growth is great, and I love working with the coco, drains so good. Still gotta figure out my rez/pump/drip situation. Will post more pics of that once setup. this should cover it... these are scraps... extras... white widow ?unknown orig. white widow ?unknown orig. white widow ?unknown orig. got some other moms restarted.. Bubba... Grand Daddy Purple... Dynamite... ghetto fab setup... |

Man you are going to love that Monkey Juice. Be careful with all those additives though. I've had great success with the MJ by itself. Sometimes less is more. Plus the more stuff that goes into your res the crazier the PH gets IME.
Damn I never thought Homer would make me horny!

Thanks everyone for poppin in! I'm leanin on ya'll for this one, so dont let me down! =D
Mitsu1, good luck to you too man! Can't wait to see your thread up here. And nice avatar! Lol, but that damn yellow things in my way!! >_< meduser180056, I know man, I'm gonna keep it simple, monkey juice, big bud, overdrive, sensizym, maybe carboload. The foliars I will keep up tho. Hey what PH do we do our foliars at??? And while I have you here bud, could you smell your monkey juice bloom B? Does it stank... rank? I think I need a replacement. Probably gonna do it anyways, not worth the risk for 20$ =). J-Roc, thanks bro! It was a bit of work, but fun working with coco. It's not dusty!!! |
