Can you say Ortega?

Greetings! Just wanted to let everyone know Magus Genetics has done some preliminary crosses with the infamous ORTEGA with his outstanding male Warlock. According to Gerrit, this is a work in progress. He will not release a new strain for sale until it's offspring are uniform, stable, and ready! Could be a few years away!!

I first became interested in the Ortega after seeing it growing in Breeder Steve's Lugano "Dream" fields in Switzerland. The Ortegas, Breeder Steve had were nearing harvest time and were some very different plants. These Ortega beautys reminded me of yucca or blue agave plants. You know the type of plants that send up a main center stalk with a crown of smaller branches close to the base. Just Beautiful to see growing in open fields! As some of you know, there were different Ortega families. Legends Seeds used to sell these and back around 2000; these were definitely some heirloom seeds back then. Maybe Red from Legends can chime in and give us some background on the different Ortega families and his experience with the Ortega in Switzerland.

Gerrit was kind enough to provide me with some of his experimental cross seeds: a Warlock (M) x Ortega (F). I sowed 6 seeds and all have germed. One was too small and was culled. Pics to follow...

Cheers! Mosca Negra

If my stoned mind is correct (but don't put a whole lot of weight on this) Red offered from a "Seedbank Original" seed run an Ortega #1 and the "previously unreleased" #2 (that was used in LUI). They went quick. That's for sure.

Here is the family picture of the 5 Ortega x Warlock seedlings. The Ortega seeds used in this cross, were in fact, originally acquired from Legends Seeds. Therefore, as WeedWrapperMan stated above the seeds sold by Legends were Seedbank originals. Red, you out there?

Gerrit found that the original Ortega females had hermie tendencies. By crossing the Ortegas with Warlock, Gerrit is looking to stablize the offspring. This is why this project could take several years before the crosses are stable enough to be ready for market.

Thanks for the props DrO! Also, I will be germing, this weekend, some Ortega F2's Gerrit had been more than gracious to throw my way!! I would like to compare and contrast the original pheno to the improved Warlock x Ortega. Should be interesting...

Happy Gardening, Mosca

Breeder Steve used the original ortega clone. I think the clone originated from neville. The seedbank used to sell:

I'm not 100% sure I got the #s correct (positive on #2; looking at old seed packet right now) but the crosses are correct.

Ortega #1 = Ortega X HP
Ortega #2 = "Combination of 3 indica-kush strains" according to seed packet.
Ortega #3 = Ortega X NL

I tried to grow 2 packs of the #2 but none of the germinated (old seeds). I saw one person back on CW that grew the ortegaXnl and only info mentioned was it had an orange taste and the person wasn't overly impressed. Breeder steve also mentioned that none of the crosses impressed him either.

Ortega's not the most potent (good potency though), great taste, quality high, and great yield make it super. Smokes 50/50 like zilla said in another thread.. very relaxing but not tiring. Cures to a sweet strawberry earthy hashy smell. I like this one a lot.

Dubi in the house! Thanks for stopping by my friend!

sbz- Wow! Thanks for the info Scay Beez! Sorry to hear about the difficulty in germinating your Ortegas. Gerrit said, he had 6 seeds to work with, of which, he managed to germ 5 (one male and 4 females).

By crossing the Warlock with these Ortegas, with the correct selection, Gerrit is looking to improve on the potency, taste and stabilize the hermie tendencies of the Ortega. The Ortega bud structure varied from thick, solid, and tight to more of a fluffy and semi tight bud thickness. From some of the pics that I have seen, these plants were all bud! Maybe Gerrit could share some with us?

Also wanted to share some of my crosses I am currently growing out. I have taken a fast and PHAT yielding Reefman's Hashplant male(pole plant pheno) and crossed him to the following:

Motavation (Too Strong--Watch Out! Danger Will Robinson, Danger)
NL#5xHaze (Stellar high & yields--Check out my gallery for pics of the mom)
Rez's Strawberry Diesel (Out of this world- Check out my gallery for pics of the mom)
Reef's Sour Diesel (Killer taste & High)
Hashplant (f2) Pole plant pheno
Sweet Double Dutch (2nd Place Indica Cup 2007-Seed Co)
High Yield Double Dutch (1st Place Indica Cup 2007-Indy Growers)
Grapefruit (Reef's) Phat yields & Sweet Pink Taste--VERY STRONG!

I also am growing out a Motavation cross, I did with Rez's William's Wonder. Lastly, there is a cross I did with a Dutch commercial strain called "PP". This PP is NOT to be confused with Power Plant. The PP is sativa w/ a VERY HEAVY indica-type high--her nickname in Holland is ZOMBIE WEED! I have crossed this commerical cutting, PP, with Reef's Cinderella99! Look out!!

Depending on how these crosses turn out, I may donate some to Seedbay for others to enjoy!

Cheers, Mosca Negra

Hello All,

Update: seedlings are doing well and the Ortega (f2's) are doing well. Four of the six seedlings made it; one died on me (damn) and one seedling did not germ. So, 4 out of 6 ain't bad...

Pics to follow later tonight!

Cheers,

Mosca
