Fox Farm Chunky Perlite
Has anyone seen this new chunky perlite fox farm has?Its in a big 4 cu. ft. bag for only $20.You can even use it in net pots.I think its better than hydroton.I got it to mix in with my soil. There are no sharp eadges and the stuff is lots bigger than norm. plus i was paying $3 a bag at walmart for these little bags of little perlite. This is alot better deal. And mixed with peat at 60% peat to 40% chunky perlite and a little lime makes a great light mix.

What about the "float" factor? You may still want to top with a layer of hydroton. Looks chunkier then the "coarse" horticultural perlite I get. It could be a good thing.

not a prob.
That pot in that pic above is a 5 in. net pot.I just put a lsd clone that is rooted in a little rockwool cube. This is my first go with dwc but the roots are not hanging out the bottom of the pot yet so i have the water level about 2 inches up from the bottom of the pot and its working just fine.Hydroton ''floats" also dosent it?Anyway ya 2 niches up from the bottom and its not floating the perlite at all.I bet i can dunk it down to the rim and it wont float up out of the pot.I have always used alot of perlite in my soiless mixes and i like this stuff alot better than schultz and the price cant be beat.I was thinking about trying to grow a plant in strait perlite in a 3 gal pot.Might work good but woud have to have it on a drip feed with a recovery or something.

I use it to aerate my soiless mixes. It's good shit, but you don't want to add too much to soil, adds too much air me thinks. About 25-33% added into promix or sunshine mix is probably ideal.
It will be interesting to see how it works for hydro  cc

That sounds rite
Ya add about 30% to promix would be fine.Promix is already a lite mix with lots of perlite in it.I like promix alot. But this time a could not get pro mix (stoped carrying it).But i got a bale of peat made by premeir the co. that makes promix.I mixed it about 60% peat to 40% perlite and 1 cup pulverized dol. limestone ($5 for a 50 lb. bag at lowes) per 5 gal. of mix.I feed every watering so i dont add any ferts to my mix.I may try worm castings mixed in next time. This is my first try at hydro .I am useing some nutes called dutch nute. form. I use pure blend pro in my soiless mix.So im going to see how much diff my lsd clone grows in dwc with chem nutes compared to her sister that was rooted the same time that in the mix i stated above getting pure blend pro.Thay both get cal-mag and liquid karma. We will see how much if any faster the dwc plant grows.

haha please keep talking about good mixes!
I recently got some promix, a nice big bag of it, and was wondering about the mixture/feeding for it, as I recently killed my soil-plants. But, live and learn. The promix I got is peat, perlite and lime.
Will I need to add more lime to the mix? I have a 3 part mix from Earth Juice , and it says to water every feeding, and has a nice guide for how much on soilless container plants. Is there a time (other than nute burn) that I should water with JUST water? it's Grow is 2-1-1, Bloom is 0-3-1, and catalyst to wrap it up at .03-.01-.10 With no ferts in the soilless mix, what kind of nute regime do seed/seedlings need? 1/3 - 1/4th the "normal" dose? This is a very helpful thread to a newb like me. Thanks a bunch!

Speakin' of Foxfarm...
Does anyone out there know where to buy Foxfarm products in the midwest?
I've been readin' up all the BOG lessons I can find on growing from his recent postings, and he keeps mentioning the use of Foxfarm Bigbloom fertilizer when moving plants into the flowering stage. Been to dozens of nurseries and stores here in Indiana and can't find ANYTHING from Foxfarm on the shelf. Can I get a compatible product from Miricle-Gro, or is this something special that caters to the "finer" cannabis-growing circles? Not especially keen on buying it on-line with a credit card. Thanks for any leads on Foxfarm nutes GordyP

Substantialy chunky stuff there Okie, that would help my grow no end as I'm earth grow and possibly introduce more air too the root mass! which has got to be good. I wonder if that brand has a parent company or other retailer here in UK? I'm fed up being robbed for perlite like yourself I can only find localy in small bags which equal big robbery
Have you tried Coco products man? That is another possibility too substitute my home made mix! I have read a lot of good thing's about Coco and the benefits for both Hydro and Earth.... Might be a thought as it may work out cheeper yet and more efficient. Good luck Okie and will be watching that wee one grow big and strong mate. |
