Since September 2003 the Netherlands has made medicinal cannabis legal in the pharmacies. Being a medical user myself I got my prescription ready and went down to the local Apotheek. When I gave my prescription to the woman behind the counter I was told I had to come back in two days. I thought to myself; what kind of medical system makes you wait two days to get the medicine you need? In all my life I have never had to do this with medicine I was receiving to get well. I wanted to know why medical cannabis users are treated this way. With a cold shoulder I was told to wait and come back.

I immediately went to my favorite coffeeshop the Dampkring. I ordered some Bio- Haze, not only did it cost less than the Government weed, the person behind the counter was warm and friendly, and best of all I didn’t have to wait for my medicine, I received it when I needed it. After smoking a big spliff, I was feeling calm and relaxed, and in the medical sense, medicated. I thought to myself if I had to rely on the Government I would still feel sick. I felt very grateful for the coffeeshops right at that moment. Especially a coffeeshop that sold organic cannabis like the Dampkring does. I left taking some medicine home with me.

Being a breeder of cannabis and a medical user, I like to grow my own. I grow it 100% organically. I use no pesticides, no chemicals. I grow it with my heart. I grow it to self-medicate myself. During the period that I have to work on the crop I am growing, I smoke the medicine from my last crop. I find the farming aspect to be quite therapeutic, working with the green plants, breathing all that fresh oxygen through my nostrils, not to mention the aroma therapy. I think of cannabis not just as medicine, but also as a Sacred Plant. It is the sacrament for my worship of God. It helps me to feel the Divine nature of Life. I wear clothes made out of it, have paper made from it, and put the very high in Omega 3’s hemp seed oil in my smoothies. Considering the 50,000 useful products that can be made from hemp, even if I didn’t need it for medicine, I would look at it as the most beneficial plant on Mother Earth.

I went back to the pharmacy two days later to finally receive my medicine. In a very cold way I was given the sealed cannabis, and would have to wait until I got home to judge the quality and smell the aroma. I asked for the more potent of the two choices available. I was given two 5-gram containers of cannabis called Bedrocan. I brought it home aware of the fact that I was carrying 10 grams of cannabis (5 grams above the limit). I felt quite legal in doing this because I had my prescription from my doctor. When I opened it up I saw that it was Sativa genetics. I would say the grade I would give the aroma was a B. The manicuring grade was B+ and the taste a B. The effect had a grade of B. All in all B grade cannabis. The medicine I had gotten at coffeeshop the Dampkring was grade A. It was a Euro cheaper a gram at the coffeeshop. I was also able to buy some Nederhash, (hash made by Dutch growers) at the Dampkring and it was the most medicinal substance I smoked.

Next I went home and smoked my own cannabis, cannabis that I had worked on with my own hands. Since growing my own cannabis gave me much more than two choices, I chose strains that I knew made me feel the best. I took small amounts of 4 of my favorite types of marijuana and blended them together in what I like to call a Soma Salad. Knowing exactly what conditions my medicine was grown in made me feel more confident about smoking it, especially in these days of Mad Cow Disease. It was wonderful, smoking my own medicine, simply the best of the three choices available to me.

The only drawback is that growing your own medicine in Holland is illegal, and it is truly absurd. What could be so wrong with a medical cannabis user growing their own medicine?
Medical cannabis users have rights, not to wait for their medicine, but to have high quality medicine when they need it. As I considered all of my options I came to the conclusion that risky or not, I still have to grow my own.

I saw the 'flos' that you had when I last visited,and it looks to be the same old crap....it seems the Dutch govt is continuously contract-growing some 1/2-assed med herb,eh?

Perhaps you should see if you couldn't get some sort of 'med provider's provision' so's you could grow legal,organic cannabis for yourself and other med patients,similar to Oregon's Med-Provider Provisions.
It's odd that the Dutch are so progressive in some areas and so ass-backwards in others-I'd expect a model from them that the world could follow.....
Although knowing how much the Dutch,historically,like smuggling (many centuries of opium,tea,et al) dealing in contraband,and profiteering I can see the internal paradoxes that the Dutch system has to face when dealing with these issues.
