How easy does F-13 hermi...or, what did I do wrong?
Hi guys, first time posting long time lurking...
Background, this is my 4th time growing in soil. I have vegged many plants successfully, flowering is another story. Everytime I flower, I end up with a male or a hermi (bagseed, sage and sour, and now this f-13) So I have this F-13 plant that has been vegging for about 6-7 weeks and about 3 weeks into vegging, I thought I saw the beginnings of balls on one branch. Well I let this plant stay in the veg area cause I had space. Before chopping due to space I figured I would flower just to make sure it was a boy. The day after I switched to 12/12 I saw some pistils (I NOW KNOW WHAT THEY LOOK LIKE ). But then the balls came and at first I thought they were something else (denial) like swollen calyxes waiting to have pistils bursting out of them.So I did do a few things differently this time: 1) took cuttings 3 days into flower (after I saw pistils) 2) temps up at the top are around 88f and about 80f at the base (LST'd about 18" in height as of now, started around 12"). Top of plants' branches are about 6" away from a 400w MH light, not air cooled but the extraction vent is right above the light. 3) I heard something about somekind of brand of silicon that causes hermies, I used gro-tek or pro-tek liquid silicon 4) I think a small amount of light leak in the rear of the flower cab, it is in my closet. Cab is one from HD that is 48"w 24"d 71"h split down the middle for veg and flower. I'm doing the lollipop style grow and have only 4 branches. 1 is almost completely balls from the top down. 1 is 75/25 balls/pistils. 1 is 50/50, and the one I saw the pistils on first is the only one that looks like a true female budding(like in the 2-4week flowering pics). I'll be damned to kill her since I have never gotten this far, and I know I need to fix the light leak, but could the other things have affected her? Should I abandon the cuttings I took that haven't rooted for me? So I will be lifting the light (how much higher?), fixing the light leak as much as I can, adding greensand and garden lime to soil ahead of time (I was using the liquid silicon as a more or less natural PH up/stabilizer), and obviously taking cuttings at least a week before I throw her into flower. Am I on the right track? |

it could be a backwards hermie meaning a male that puts out pistals...pretty common with DJ's strains

The temps/nutes being off might add to the stress but if you fix the light leak you should be fine

DJ's plants can withstand some stress, however a light leak will cause just about any strain out there to hermie.

Hi guys and thanks!
After looking at my plant and climbing into the flowering chamber and closing the door, I can almost certainly say that it was due to a light leak. Since I had her at 4 main branches (think corners of a square), the two branches up front where the light leak was are completley male whereas the branches in the back are almost completely female. So, 4 out of the 5 cuttings I took have balls on them...the one cutting remaining either doesn't or only has 1 premature looking ball. My question is since this issue was due to light leak, can the one that has no/1 premature ball grow out to be a complete female, or are her genetics pemanently confused now (will she always hermi from now on)? |

Yup, DJ Blueberry ran flawlessly, until I introduced some unwanted light leaks..... BANANA TIME!! It's ok, 'cause I love to make fem'd seeds....

DutchMaster Hydro product line has a helpful tool....
.... It's called "Reverce" formaly "feminizer" (same thing just had to change some packaging and lableing to be good with atleast Oregon and Washington hort laws, ) it's a floral spray, add 10 ml "penetrator" from DutchMaster and spray 2-3 weeks befor flowering and then weekly for the first 3-4 weeks of flowering. they go into detail on the how and why on the product page, but the quick on it is the product blocks the hormone that the herm survival gene triggers, at the worst it will reduce the male flower production to almost none.... i'd say it works 100% on 9 of 10 herm plants. it has been a wonderful tool for my garden seance i have sevral landrace strains from the east asia and india zones. sweet god given herb, but i'd have to run them in the flower chamber solo, and count on picken seeds to smoke the herb. With the hermi hormone blocked the flowers are far deancer and the resin production if up 100 fold.... i used it on a few of my F-13's that had herm issues, and within days new male flowers were nowhere to be found. everyone should have a liter of this stuf in the closet just incase your prize starts to drop pollen. Grow for all the right reasons, Peace. GF
