Teen busted after posting pictures of pot online

Photos were posted on MySpace.com

The district attorney says a Sheboygan teen is learning the hard way that posting pictures of your potted marijuana plants on MySpace.com is a bad idea.

That picture, labeled, "My Mary Jane thats growin in my closet right now," also gave police a road map to the alleged stash.

According to Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco, that's why Moua Yang, 18, was charged Wednesday with two felonies and two misdemeanors following a police raid of his south-side apartment.

"When someone is going to advertise their drug use — or any other crime for that matter — on a Web site, chances are we're going to find it, and this is what's going to happen," DeCecco said. "We appreciate the help. Thanks a lot."

Yang, of 2709 S. 18th St., was arrested Monday after police found three potted marijuana plants in a basement closet that matched the online picture, according to a criminal complaint. Yang was identified after a school resource officer at South High School identified him as a former student there.

Still on Yang's MySpace Web site as of Wednesday afternoon were pictures of a bong commonly used to smoke marijuana — labeled "my baby" — and numerous pictures of Yang and his friends drinking beer and flashing gang signs at parties.

The identifying quote at the top of Yang's MySpace page is, "I need that Kali Chronic," slang for marijuana.

"People think that Web sites are more private than they are," DeCecco said. "This is just another tool for us to use."

Police first found out about Yang's alleged drug use through his postings on another Web site that police monitor for gang-related activity, according to a criminal complaint.

On that site, one similar to MySpace that allows users to set up profile pages for others to view, Yang posted pictures of numerous weapons and drug paraphernalia and brags about having marijuana plants growing in his house and using Ecstasy, the complaint said.

"The officers were surprised about how brazen they were on the Internet," said Lt. Dave Schafhauser of the Sheboygan Police Department, referring to Yang and others pictured or mentioned on his site. "They talked about their growing of the marijuana and some of the gang activity they were involved in."

The picture of the potted marijuana plants is also posted on the gang-related site, the complaint said.

Yang faces up to three years and seven months behind bars and fines up to $21,500 if convicted on charges of felony manufacturing marijuana and maintaining a drug trafficking place, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Gotta love Myspace!

As long as there are dumbasses like that - I'll feel pretty secure. Cops will feed on the weak and stupid first.

I doubt theres a lot of "trolling". Pretty much anything you post on the net can (and will?) be cached on a search engine. Putting "pot plants" in a post (esp. on a myspace type site with no concern for privacy) will end up on any search engine in a couple weeks. A basic rule is never post any word (or pic...esp. if related) that you wouldnt want any bad people to see eventually.

EDIT: I know this personally btw. You never know who's looking!!

funny article

Texas cops thought they'd made a major drug bust when they raided a home northwest of Houston last Tuesday. After all, it looked like there were huge marijuana plants growing in the front yard.

"All of a sudden, they burst in with their guns loaded, pointing at me, screaming, 'Get on the floor! Get on the floor!'" northwest Harris County resident Blair Davis told KHOU-TV.

It turns out the tall plants with the narrow leaves arranged in a fan pattern weren't pot plants at all, but specimens of Texas Star hibiscus (search), which Davis grows for his landscaping business.

That didn't convince the 10 or so members of the Harris County Organized Crime Unit (search) who stormed around the house.

"I just put my head down, shook it and said: 'Guys, you are making a terrible mistake. That is Texas Star hibiscus, not marijuana,'" Davis told the TV station. "They just told me to shut up."

At one point, the officers discussed whether the bamboo in the window might be the demon weed as well, Davis told the Houston Chronicle. They also asked him what he planned to do with the watermelons and cantaloupes growing out back.

"What would I do with them?" Davis said he responded.

It turned out a concerned citizen had seen the native Texas plant, which has little white flowers and smooth green leaves — marijuana has rough leaves and dense flowering buds — in the yard and tipped off the authorities.

"My guys went out there, and they looked at the plants and stuff, and they believed them to be marijuana," Lt. Dan Webb told KHOU-TV.

After about an hour, the officers decided the search was over. They gave Davis a "citizen's information card" with the words "closed-report" written on it.

"No apology, no nothing," Davis complained to the Chronicle. "I realize they have a job to do, but this seems a little bizarre."

Lt. Webb defends his officers.

"I'm sure it was traumatic," he told KHOU. "Any time there's a search warrant served at your house, there's gonna be some trauma involved."

Davis thinks the narcotics officers might need a little more training.

"If they don't know what a marijuana plant looks like, maybe they should bring a picture with them," he told the TV station, "before they invade a citizen's home."
