one 'r', two 'c's
somewhere in here there is a remark from SamS that it is one of the few countries in the world where quality is steadily improving
I doubt the King or central government will ever attempt to tighten up on the Rif - it is in absolutely nobody's interest to do so, since the entire region depends on hash for its livelihood - moreover it is ethnically quite distinct, so the consequences of regional poverty would likely be extreme I would love to get to Chefchauen and thereabouts. Tangiers is somewhere I have always wanted to visit simply because of the Burroughs connection - I hear it is not so great, but it looks to be a convenient enough starting point to visit the Rif Paul Bowles is another interesting writer if you are visiting Morocco |

tanger is an experience.. but nowadays not a nice one. sorry.
the town itself - its placing - makes it the last town of the african continent and therefor it has a concentracion of people looking for an oportunity to quick bucks - so lots of scammer - the prices are almost european - on everything - it can be 10 times more expensive than rest of the country.. and on top there is "guides" (scammers) lineing up and waiting for the tourists to get of the ferry. really - just have a walk around during day time - and then continue down to real morocco. nice forgotten beaches: Sidi kauiki (great surf!) very small - very rural - very relaxed. Molay busselman (Wild beach - and a lagoon protected by a huge dune) nice for a few days.. besides that: chefchauen is the place to go to get hash (not necesary to go to ketama realy - and there is lots of things to see there + nice mountain trecking + climbing if ur into that) marakesh for the huge markets and for that 1001 and one nights feeling. but the hash there is of lower quality and more expensive (mind u - still good). decline allways the first offers u get - instead try to find ur own relaxed sales person - not the anoying street guys that seems to be MOB or gang related. those little forgotten artifac shops.. with old carpets etc - usually they are VERY happy to get u some GOOD pollen if u chat a bit. its now 4 years since i went. i guess things have changed a litlle bit. peace |

heya - yeh, for me the main draw of Tangiers is just that William Burroughs wrote Naked Lunch there ... and yeh so far almost nobody has had a good word to say about the place ... Burroughs lived there when it was an International Zone in the '50s (round the corner from the first ever American Embassy) and it seems that much of the time he was there he didn't much like it either

The rif mountains in the north is where its all going on. Chefchaoen is the epicenter for tourists in search cannabis. A tiny vilage set in the mountains where it (up to recently) is possable to find top quality hash but as a tourist it can be difficult. You will have to settle with medium grade. It is as close to the action as you can safely get. Ketama to the east is all fucked up by all accounts.
As morocco moves ever closer to europe the police are cracking down on the trade in a whole so BE CAREFUL. was smoking in front of the chief of police in plane clothes last year in chefchaoen (didnt know at the time). He smiled and told me to have a niceday. But judgeing on the reactions of the locals around me who were in the know. I was lucky. To the best of my knowledge the army destroide a couple of hundred hecters of cannabis in the chefchaoen area summer 2006. Im not sure how this is effecting supply in the area. In my experience the further away you move from the rif the more you pay, harder it is to find and the quality tends to drop. I found it almost impossable to find hash in the south of the country. Be careful traveling around the country with hash. As you will probobly encounter police roadblocks Mor |
